Large file size WOW! How to lower it in Chief?
KenL-sdd replied to JECORMIER's topic in Tips & Techniques
Justin, I work with file sizes like you have many times. Yes, I dress mine out for the clients during the design process to give them a better understanding of space. The file size does not bother me. I have opened yours with no issues. Your CPU Intel i7-4770 Quad-Core is almost 10 years old. I believe that is your main issue. I could not imagine how slow your computer would be handling this file. The benchmark speed of your cpu is 7055, while a new i9-13900K is 59658. If you are designing homes of this caliber then In my opinion it would pay you to upgrade your system. I'm guessing that you must have a newer Video card than the GTX 970. I did not think that X14 would run on that card. Regards, Ken -

I'm Looking at the plan. Nice job. You need to update your signature to X14. I will post if I see anything creating the file size. -
Doug, Sometimes in live sections, I need to use a point marker as the point of dimension. While Chief dimensions to the correct point in the section, the leader line will shoot out into space. Using the point marker stops this from happening. If you don't want to see the point marker, then just make it smaller after you have what you want. Maybe point marker size .002 Ken

Mick, You also had a good catch on the hardware! I had to buy a new laptop to run x14 in the field due to an older video card. Oh well it was a great laptop for 10 years....

You are sending elevations, floor plans, and framing details to cad details, IMHO. This is a BIG No NO in 99% of the cases. Work with live elevations and floor plans. Each line takes up space in memory. I fought Chief until I took classes to understand the program and how it works and watched videos. I suggested using separate plan files just to speed up this plan. Classes one on one helped me to understand how to use Chief. There are people in this forum that can teach you, or Chief themselves. If you want to message me I will give you a few names. I'm taking a week long class in February and looking forward to it. The classes were and are still a good investment for me. PS: Premier X14 is far superior to X12 Best wishes!

Here you go.

I try not to send walls with such complex patterns to a cad detail. Keep them as walls.
-
Go to cad details under the project browser. You can delete all at one time or each one on its own.

Doug, I believe the issue is the plan size due to the Cad Details. Your plan file is 326 meg as you posted it. Deleting the cad details it becomes 82 meg. Since all of your cad details are lines and pictures, you may consider having them in a separate file. In your detail 1 under cad details all of your walls and hatch patterns are all lines. This is part of what is creating the huge file. I try not to send walls with such complex patterns to a cad detail.

I agree with Rene. I have used another cad system, Builders Cad, that quit updating their product and basically went out of business. I don't want that to happen again! That forced me to move to and learn another system, Chief Architect. Chief has done a good job of updating its product with new features. Hence I have always been more than happy to pay their SSA fee just to get the new features and libraries. I understand the SSA fees may not be enough to keep the product updates coming. I'm happy to see that Chief is keeping their existing users under their same program of the SSA. If I were a new user I would still buy Chief over any other software.

Living Area Square feet notation disappears.
KenL-sdd replied to stevenyhof's topic in General Q & A
I keep a text file with Chief fixes that I only use once in a blue moon. The living area is one of the items. Another is turning off rooms in the layer set to show the subfloor ISO the finish floor. -
I have always used intel processors. The motherboards and cpu seem to be advanced compared to i-9 motherboards. I see the single thread on the amd is slower at a standard clock rate compared to the i-9 9900k. Is anyone using the AMD Ryzen Threadripper 3960X ? How is it working?

What was the 'secret' to opening two layouts in X11?
KenL-sdd replied to DzinEye's topic in General Q & A
Hold the control key down and quickly double click on chief to open. Sometimes this needs to be done a few times to work. -
New licensing be careful or this could happen to you..

I have notified chief architect. Mainly want the users to understand what chief is doing to be sure they dont have the same issue I had today. Not often I dont have internet service. Have a great day. -

Okay. I guess everyone thinks it's ok for chief to deactivate x10 and x11 everywhere if you only deactivate x11 on one computer. But requires me to activate each one separately when I reactivate. I give -

If you only activate x10 you can not use x 11 on that machine. They deactivate simultaneously but must be activated separately. -
When you unlicense x11 it also unlicenses x10 or if you unlicense x10 it also unlicenses x11. That is fine and I understand why it is being done. However is should also work the other way if I license x11 for my laptop then it should give me access to x10 or vise versa.. Case in point, I licensed x10 on my laptop to go into the field and meet with a client on a job, I have been working on for a while. Unfortunately the drawing had been opened and saved in x11 and was in the wrong file folder. Being in the middle of nowhere without internet connection I was hosed <that's the nice word> thanks to chiefs new way to license. If you are going to remove access to x10 and x11 if just one is unlicensed then if I license one product the other should be licensed on the same machine it should automatically give access to the other product. Chief please fix this MAJOR licensing problem.

I just had a friend put in a GTX 2080. Until he made this change he had 4 to 6 seconds lag time... Remove chief from your control panel and see what happens

Be sure to go into NVIDIA control panel and set cheif X11 to use card. Otherwise chief is very slow. This should solve your issue. See attached. Let me know. Ken
