I was trying to sketch up an idea I had in my head in Chief the other day and was going in circles. By the time I got close in Chief the idea had morphed into something unusable. Then I picked up a pencil and paper and began sketching out an idea and voila, there it was. Not the best analogy but sometimes a pencil and paper is just more practical in the real world than all the latest technology.

I walked through, in my head, a house measure with a Disto Blue Tooth device that included a lap top opened to Chief on a stand that moved from room to room, and tried to imagine choosing a wall, taking the measurement, checking the wall in Chief to make sure the measurement was entered accurately, and/or checking to see if the correct wall was selected, then selecting another wall, going to that wall with the Disto, measuring, then back to Chief to select another wall, then to the next room, rinse and repeat, and so on. There is even a video out there somewhere showing the technique but after watching that it only confirmed that it's simply not for me.

I am not a Luddite when it comes to technology but technology for technology's sake leaves me wanting as compelling as it is. And sure someone will post a thread about a lidar enhanced room measuring device that gets real close and is compelling because technology simply is compelling but I can get most measure done in under an hour, miss features rarely (any more) and am no longer enthralled with the latest measuring techniques. Do you remember Chief's Room Planner? Me either.

I did try using a Disto and room planner several times, it took me 3 times as long to measure, not for me either. But it was good to transfer it directly into Chief. Room planner had no way to take the outside measurements also.

Not recommending anyone else measure the way I do and this did not require extreme accuracy but this is what I brought home from the job walk to build the as built model. I take a pretty detailed video with my phone and note window sizes verbally as I know a 4040 slider when I see one or detail the windows when needed. I no longer measure the exterior. I tried graph paper and Rocket Book and a blue tooth laser and they just got in the way of my personal work flow. Looks pretty scary but really easy for me to interpret as all the squiggles mean something and translate pretty easily with the video for confirmation.

Larry, my wife Penny does all my measurements and gathering up all the information along with about 200 pictures and I'm good to go. Sometimes I will have a question, but the photos will most of the time tell me what I need. She will also crawl into an attic and take photos. She is a lot more limber than I.

  3. to find out the layer of anything, just select it and open it and go to the layer tab to see where it's kept or change it to any layer you want.  Or you can select anything and look at the bottom of the screen and see what layer it's on without having to open anything.

I’d like to get an MSI laptop with a 3060 in it because the prices are quite low but jump up quite a bit for a 3070 or higher.

When you say, it works fine for you, are you able to handle larger projects?  Like a 4 to 6 story multiplex with 20+ apartments? I don’t need to have framing on but I would like at least all the cabinetry and some furniture in place.

Sorry, i don't get into anything more than 3 stories, but they can be detailed. I never do any commercial either. Not sure how chief would handle that.

  5. what really matters is that I add all the square footages for my square footage price. For the cities, it might differ from that depending on the city, I usually have to check with them. 50 different cities are too much especially when they change constantly and often, even amongst different plan checkers in the same city

This is the latest.....  I am adding more floor area to an existing house,  if I double the floor area on the project I have to use all electric,  no gas ranges,  so I need to keep the new floor area under the existing floor area so I can use a gas range. (remember we have a climate crises and if I use this electric range vs gas I will save the world).

So how do I figure the new and existing floor areas according to the jurisdiction?   Well it is obvious,  you measure to the exterior face of existing studs at existing first floor but for the new 2nd floor addition you measure to the interior face of new studs at 2nd floor. (it's obvious.....  right?). and then you do not include the new stairwell area at 2nd floor.  I kept the new floor area under 100% of existing floor area by 6.387 s.f.

My client can have a gas range and the world is saved and I can sleep at night!

    Ain't life grand?

that's a new one for me so far, hope it never happens around here

Not sure if my Alienware R12 with the 3080 would be slow on X14 but I am not willing to switch over from X13 right now to find out.

I have almost your same setup and no slowness, but it all depends what kind of projects you have going on and what's in them

    Hi Charles,

As I noted previously, I am in the process of doing a complete setup of the StreamDeck XL-32 for Chief.  It's a rather time consuming process to get all the Hotkeys and Chief Buttons organized.  Once I've got it working to my satisfaction I will make it available to other users (at a cost of course).

    ok I'm in!!!

My goal is to make my Streamdeck 32 be a virtual replacement for most of the Object Toolbars and a lot more.  I've got a long way to go before it's done - but I've got a pretty good start on it.

I'm also planning on using it to search the Library - at least to narrow down what I'm looking for.

WOW GOOD LUCK WITH THAT, mine is basic with the most used tools

If a Hotkey simply starts with an alpha-numeric character it can inadvertently start searching the Library (only happens if the Library has focus).

In order to avoid this I use Ctrl+Alt+[ a ] as the 1st part of the Hotkey.  This insures that the Plan View has focus and the action takes place there.  Some of my combinations:

    • Ctrl+Alt+S --- Stair Tools
    • Ctrl+Alt+C --- Cabinet Tools (conflicts with COPY/PASTE but I don't use that anyway)
    • Ctrl+Alt+D --- Door Tools
    • Ctrl+Alt+W --- Window Tools
    • Ctrl+W --- Wall Tools

You may find that some of these will conflict with Chief's Default Hotkeys - in which case you may want to use something else - or change the one that conflicts.

Generally, I only use a few standard macros ( Ctrl_C, Ctrl_V, Ctrl_X, Ctrl_P, Ctrl_S ) so I avoid creating Chief Hotkeys that conflict with those.

Note that if the Library has focus (search) then using a string of characters in a Hotkey will initiate that Library feature.  So far, I haven't found any Hotkeys that gives focus to the Library Browser. :(

I am not normally an extensive user of Hotkeys because I simply can't remember very many and my fingers aren't nimble enough to press several keys simultaneously.

However, I've been setting up my StreamDeck_32 so I'm having to define a lot of unique Hotkeys.  That piece of hardware provides me with a visible indication of what the command to be executed is.  With 32 buttons per page, unlimited folders and pages I'm able to take advantage of Hotkeys for thousands of things I used to have to do with the mouse and Chiefs dbx's.

I really \like my Streamdeck 32 although I'm sure it not as extensive as yours. Never liked using hotkeys

  11. I do mono slabs all the time and they look pretty good; I think you just need to learn more about it. There is almost always some sort of manually adjusting after auto building to get it the way you want. One hint I use is to put a room label on each room of the foundation with the floor height listed so I can look instantly and see if the height is correct. I noticed the interior footings are not in your chief generated plan, you just have to check the box to have a footing in the wall DBX. and it will auto generate when you build the foundation or it's very easy to add them manually.
