ACADuser
I need to install some art work on vertical surfaces like walls & counters & on p-solids. The are work is not rectangular so I need to modify the shape to fit the art work & no frame. I will make the front to back thickness no more than 1/2" maybe even 1/4". One or two of them will need to be groups of circles. I plan ob creating the cluster of objects & then block them. Considering material regions , p-solids & counter tops. I know other can be used like soffits etc. I just want to do this once and use an object that is easy to manipulate in section view while placing on walls, cabinet backs & tall p-solid columns. Anyone have a favorite material & method? Thanks in advance.
ACADuser
OK looks like the p-solid can not be made into a block and saved to the catalog. Converting to a shape and can still not save to catalog. Exploding the shape is a messy wrong turn. Off to do some more.
ACADuser
Well looks like I can block a p-solid but it needs to be two of them? Why? I can copy in place & select both & block & add to the catalog. Did not want two. Any other way?

You will now get the Make Architectural Block icon on the Edit toolbar.
ACADuser
Thanks Glenn. That worked. So p-solid works as well as any item in the tool box. I was able to make a rectangle shape with 1/4" thickness and radius the corners. The applied the art work. I needed to rotate this one 45 deg & see that the material had to also be rotated. So much for the simple ones. Off to create the more complex ones tomorrow. Thanks for the replies.
Electromen
Can you post or email a jpeg image of the art or sign? I'd like to try an experiment. I have an idea using Photoshop.

Electromen
In Photoshop Open the Image Use the Magic Wand > select the white background. (tolerance 50) Inverse the selection Copy New - set background to transparent Paste Save As .png note: > .png will save the image with a transparent background, that's not possible with .jpeg In CA Build Create Image Browse > select saved image.png change size to fit the wall > retain aspect ratio X position = 0 Y position = 0 Height above ground > 60" is a safe place to start, you can move it in 3D Uncheck > Image always faces camera OK In the floor plan place the image on the surface of the wall. If it's inside the wall, you may see a partial image or nothing in 3D In 3D adjust the height. Add image to Library for future use
ACADuser
So there is no solid material involved The picture is placed on the wall surface & is a stand alone object?
Joe_Carrick
So there is no solid material involved The picture is placed on the wall surface & is a stand alone object? Sure, Images are objects. They can be forced to always face the camera or not. If you place one just 1/8" from the surface of a wall and make it so that it is facing the right direction (not always face camera) it will work just fine. Electromen
Alan, Can I post an image of the signs on a wall like I sent you?
Electromen
So there is no solid material involved The picture is placed on the wall surface & is a stand alone object? Yes, The problem with some of the images you have, is that they have a solid background. That would show a white rectangular border in CA. What I did was place the image on a transparent background in Photoshop.

ACADuser
I don't care for the 2D block shown in the plan view for images, can I change that?

ACADuser
Yes the background shows through perfectly. Thanks Greg, I have started using paint.net and it works the same but I did not realize I needed to use png file for transparent backgrounds. Thanks again. ACADuser
Looks like placing the pictures is best done in plan view? I now see where in the DBX that you can swap out the 2D block.
Electromen
The only thing I was not able to do was place it on a countertop or floor laying flat. CA doesn't give an option for the Z position, only X & Y. Z coordinate would permit it to lay horizontally. Maybe someone has a solution.

Yes, I use plan view to control the distance from walls. 3D view to adjust height.
ACADuser
Reading the manual & experimenting I was able to load pictures directly to the Catalog. Yea! One bug I found is that the 2D block you assign to the new picture does not stick. You have to go back a second time & switch to your preferred block for 2D plan viewing. Joe_Carrick
Did you select the Image in the Library and assign the 2D Block there? It should then use it for all subsequent placements in Plan.
