Renee - Nice!  Have you tried ACES tone mapping?  I just did in the scene below.  It almost makes post-production in Photoshop unnecessary.

Area lights are used to replace light fixtures such as overhead ceiling lights so, in a way, they do exist in the real world and this is the rendering engine's way of simulating them..

thanks for the education, so my take on this is, the light is used to try and make the render have more depth, because at the end of the day, a picture is, well a 2d representation, and not what we see with our eyes. so by adding these artificial area lights, this is an attempt to make the picture look more 3Dish, and hence more like the 3D world we live in.

I'm always interested in making the render better, but my stuff is not all about the render. the render sets me apart from the next guy, So my interest in the render is "how can I make it better, and then repeat the process so it is not a long endeavor every time" Today I pull two maybe 3 cameras, edit the sun position, backdrop intensity, sun intensity, add in some pot lights to brighten it up and  and then fiddle a little bit with the exposure or those other 3 scroll bars, and call it a day. So I'm always looking for tips that are repeatable.

I'm personally not interested in rendering in other software as most of my work involves multiple variations of floor plan design, and I have no patience for manually touching up photos/models, and then doing that all again for the next iteration. That's one of the reasons why I keep a live view of the camera on layout (I think you and I were both on a thread trying to get this render to layout process working better)...I hate manual repetitive steps. I'd rather wait for the layout to update, and go watch some paint dry, than make images or screenshot like others do.

Thank you, and I have been using hable for most shots as most of my materials use AO maps and shadows with aces have a bit too much contrast. Also I have a ton of filters for Chief in photoshop so its just a single click to make a ton of adjustments ...this is a filter that messes with perspective geometry, fake bokeh, some color grading, a curves adjustment, shadow lift, adds grain and sharpening as an example:

I think it depends on what the customer wants. I use a camera on layout,  which means I can make changes or different versions of plans without having to do anything. If I had to constantly make screenshots or image files and run them through a 3rd party app, it would make me go a little crazy.  I really only adjust backdrop intensity, sun intensity, sun location, manual exposure and brightness. And I will add in or move pot lights.  But interior rendering is not my business, plans are my business, and the rendering, even if it is basic, sets me apart.

So if one is providing rendering for more of a "this is what that plan will look like" reason, my thoughts are it does quite well with just those 5 adjustments. The one I did a couple weeks ago is below: sure the bookcase is not filled and there are no basket of apples on the coffee table, but it conveys the space, furniture placement, colors.
