What do you use to make floating shelves?

I went through the library and didn't find much in the way of shelves.  I looked for training videos and didn't find any (although they probably exist).    I figure you put in a blocking boards boards between the studs and then just put in lumber or a 3D object and change the finish?

If all you need to do is show a shelf, try using a soffit or a closed box shape sized to your needs.

Sorry if this went over my head but I'm new to CA.  Is that like a left handed screw driver or is there actually a shelf tool?

Haha, did not mean to offend. Yes, Cabinet Shelf tool. You can make them whatever thickness you want, as the floating shelves are usually thicker than the default Shelf.
