Gable vents

Recommended Posts

X-10

This is probably something simple that I am just overlooking, but I am having trouble not displaying gable vents in plan view.

I have attempted to simply change the layer from window to something else that I am not dispylaing, however when I do this it leaves a void in the wall where the vent would be.

Any suggestions?

The are probably in a gable ATTIC wall and the WALLS, ATTIC layer is not displayed.

Yes they are in attic walls and I tried to to switch between displaying and not displaying the attic walls to no avail.

It sounds like you want the wall in plan to appear as if there is no vent -- no cutout etc, just a solid wall.

Circled is showing the gable vent between 2 first floor windows, I have turned the label off for it and taken it out of the schedule,, but just cant get it not to show in the wall.

Cut and paste it in the attic wall above.

I note vents when I don't want them to show.

If I change the layer to something I am not displaying in this layer set I get the void in the wall.

Thanks Joey, but my sales people are easily confused... It would be helpful if I could just not display it or else next thing I know I will have some crazy mulled window on site..

I am about to just delete them and add a note. Need to get these plans off to the engineer by the morning.

Make a new symbol from the vent and choose Millwork, or Fixture or similar for its type.

Place the new symbol manually so it shows in elevation, but it won't make a hole in the wall.

Put it on a new layer and don't display that layer in plan.

Here is the rub. In order to convert to a symbol it must be the only thing visible in 3d mode. Because technically it is a window it has to be placed in a wall and if I turn the wall display off poof the window/gable vent is also turned off. If I attempt to convert with the wall on, it converts both the vent and wall into a symbol.

Draw a Room Divider wall. Uncheck Invisible. Place a vent in the wall and then convert.

This looks like you put the vent in the main wall and then moved it up to the gable wall.  Try putting the vent on the gable wall instead.

Dermot,

For some reason chief will not allow the vent to be place directly in the gable wall (maybe because it is auto generated?), so yes I can only place in the wall and drag up to the gable.

No problems placing vents in an auto generated gable wall using X10.

Solver I wonder why it won't let me> When I try to place it in the gable it automatically places at window height.

The room divider and transforming to a symbol recommendation appear to be coming along I just have to manually move it to the right location in plan view to align with the wall cladding properly.

That is generally when the wall is balloon framed instead of having a gable wall.

If you could attach the plan file, someone will take a look. Probably something simple, but easier to diagnose looking at the plan.

If you don't want to post the full plan, use Edit Area to copy that part of the plan -- at least the room that wall forms, into a new plan and attach it.

Thank you solver. A little trial and error with the symbol conversion got me where I need to be.

rgardner. Bingo! I had the walls balloon framed (local code requirement). Un checking the balloon frame will place the vent above the gable but you can drag it down and it will not show up in the wall!

Thank you guys!
