  1. @Renerabbitt I don't have any device like you mentioned. I rely on typed searches in the library. I've gotten used to the 2 letter search approach. The first 2 letters of the words in the name bring what you want almost right to the front, especially if you select catalogs or use a filter. The first 3 letters of the words in the name is of course even more accurate.

@Kbird1 And I realize I worded the 2nd part of my question very poorly. Y'all were suppose to just know what I meant I guess!

I would like multiple library browsers! So a library browser that is separate...from the library browser!

@TeaTimeDuh! Thanks for pointing out the obvious! That gives you an idea as to how long it's been since I made any adjustments to my toolbar. In hindsight I realize it was a silly question. How did I think I arranged my other custom toolbars?!

I think having the customize dialog window open threw me off...just used to the background window not being active while another window is open in the foreground.

I'm sharing an image of the library that I referred to. Obviously this is much easier to see and use than the small too icons, especially seeing as the icons look very similar at the reduced size.

  2. When I create a custom toolbar using multiple Place Library Object tool buttons, can I re-order the arrangement of these buttons in that toolbar? I wasn't smart enough to add them in alphabetical order, but that is how I'd like them arranged.

On a different note, I wouldn't need these toolbars if I could have multiple library browser windows. Is that possible?

For example, when detailing a section view, I have my own library of frequently used fill patterns. These are most easily accessed from the library especially because of the large visual size of the preview compared to the tiny size of a library tool icon. If I could have a separate library browser window, then these could remain available while I use the library for other things in the midst of the detailing process.

  3. The lines are gone in the camera view but they do show in layout. They change in layout after every adjustment, never the same thing twice. A few notes tweaks for you to try:

    1. Make those exterior walls use the default heights and automatic floor / ceiling levels.
    2. Make the walls use default exterior materials. Adjust the wall definition so the desired material is you exterior finish layer.
    3. Make windows opaque in elevation views
    4. Use a dedicated layer set for elevation views. Turn off layers for all interior cabinets, electrical, fixtures, furnishings, hardware, etc.
    5. Remove the brick ledge from your main floor brick wall definition. It isn't needed in this plan and creates unwanted double lines around the garage.
    6. Here's the last thing I did that finally worked in layout: Select the battens, increase the thickness and set them to cut the finish layer. BOOM!

    Snippet from layout:

    just too much trouble...

I use a 3d solid for the louvers with a 3d molding around it for trim. I just assign a clapboard type of siding material and adjust the texture and pattern to get to 1"-2" spacing.

If you draw these in a section view with the camera positioned within the eave, you can nicely snap to the soffit lines! Of course, in your example you'd just snap[p to the frieze lines. I'd use something real only if it needed to show up in a close-up 3d view.

  5. Select all the materials region battens on that wall. Cut and paste them onto the 2nd floor (ctrl-x, ctrl-alt-v).

To simplify the selection, first select the material region tool, making it active. Then marquee select the material regions on that wall. By having the material region tool active, you won't need to try to be as accurate with your marquee selection as other types of objects contained within that area will not be selected.

  6. 2 ways to do this that I can quickly think of...turn on the layer for walls, main layer only. This will also eliminate exterior wall layers from those views. I never show the finish layers in my floor plan views, except when showing larger scale views...1/2" scale or larger.

The other way is to manually edit the cad file and then send it (gross).

  7. Make a copy of the material, change it's properties and assign them to the matching wall types. I do the same for garage foundations when the footing is at a higher level than the basement wall footing; so that the ICF pattern starts on top of the footing.

  8. When you open Chief and the update pop up window opens, click the link. It takes you to the download page and the notes are directly underneath the software download button. A perfect time to read them is while the software is downloading and installing.

  9. My first preference would be a material, however for more realism, I would create a wall type with 2 layers. The outer main layer would horizontal framing, the inner layer would be no material or vertical framing. I'd place this on the lower level and assign it to it's own layer with no room definition. I would manually adjust top and bottom heights. You will need to adjust the bottom run elevation to be low enough for the lowest board. You can use another wall as a fence to create a trim board that follows the terrain. Just make it a railing wall with only a top rail and assign it's height to be 5.5" or whatever you need.

but if they want to play around with a RTRT model, they will need the viewer.

FWIW I would NEVER give out a file for use with the viewer! Never have, never will. This puts way too much information into the wrong hands!

This conversation inevitably leads to the need for visual improvements to the online 3d Viewer.

Does 30 hours sound reasonable on the roof top deck home for someone who is efficient with Chief (charging out at $100 per hour for example)

Yes it does, however you can really help yourself out by changing the default camera settings. With virtually no effort, you can greatly improve the appearance which will affect the perceived value to your client. Here's an example of something I produce for clients regularly. This is my most basic level offered and is very inexpensive.

  12. After cleaning up wall definitions and alignments, I built the roofs use auto-roofs. I then copied the troubling roof plane in place and edited the 2 roof planes to achieve the correct eave modelling. The roof plane cleanup took about 30 seconds! To achieve this, I had to overlap the 2 roof planes. The walk-in closet roof had to extend to the garage wall main layer which requires turning off special snapping for that plane.
