Determining where a file reference is coming from?
SusanC replied to OldBarnDesign's topic in General Q & A
I agree with Mick. Rename the LiveOak plan with something like LiveOakOld and delete the LiveOak and the empty boxes off your layout. -
Determining where a file reference is coming from?
SusanC replied to OldBarnDesign's topic in General Q & A
Can you post a screen shot of the error message you are receiving? It sounds like there is a .plan file on the layout that is not saved in the same folder as the layout. You probably can't see it, but you can find it by going through page by page and clicking on each page until your "click" highlights an empty box and you can then delete. This has happened to me in the past after I've deleted an old plan but forgotten to delete it off the layout. -
Should we add this to the "Suggestions" forum? A check box in the dialog box for the light fixture for "vaulted ceiling" so the light can be adjusted easily when you place it?
-
Oh, you are kind to say that Michael! Your solution was a good one also, but the best solution will be to ask Chief to allow independent control over the left and right sides of the toe kick!

Hi Rachel, The dormer tool can be tricky to learn because there are so many settings with the roof that need to work with it. If you've exhausted the training videos, there is another option for learning. Personal Training by a Chief instructor has helped me in the past. I book one hour, stick to one subject, write down my questions ahead of time, have a working plan open. Good luck!! Susan

Another solution: Turn your bookshelf end cabinet so the front faces the same way as the other island cabinets. Double click on the cabinet to get the dialog box to open. Click on Front/Sides/Back Remove the door and drawer and make them a "blank" space. While still in Front/Sides/Back there is an option in center of that pop up to select "Side : Right" and "Side Type: Custom Face" (see attachment) Then in "Face Items" you can select that new side and make it an "Opening" Click on "General" tab and go down to "Toe Kick". Now uncheck "Flat Sides" and do check "Flat Back" You've now gained control of the toe kicks by manipulating the cabinet and using the side as the front. Good luck and please feel free to ask more questions!

There is another forum called "Suggestions" for features you would like to see added to Chief in future versions. Being able to control the left and right toe kick independently would be a great feature.

Yes, it is worth the extra cost if you want realistic renderings. The learning curve is a little steep, but once you figure out how it works it is pretty nice.

Use the Text tools to put something to the effect of "Not for Construction" or "Preliminary Design" on your rough draft layout. If you put it on page 0 it will show up on every page automatically. Be sure to take advantage of the Watermark to have your company name displayed on your layout. Bottom right corner is a good location to place it. You can make a pdf of your layout to send to a client by sending your layout to print, but print it to pdf instead of sending it to a printer. There are other options for sharing designs with a client, like 360 degree views or the Chief 3d Viewer app, but making a pdf of your layout is easy and quick. As Eric mentioned, it is really helpful if you could include what version of Chief you are working in and what your computer specs are. This is helpful to anyone trying to answer your questions. Different versions of Chief often have different answers or work arounds. Thanks!

Don't feel badly, the floating dormer tool can be challenging and requires some knowledge of the settings to get it to work correctly with your roof. Please let us know what version of Chief you are working with and what your computer specs are. It is very helpful to let everyone know this information because the answers can vary depending on what version of Chief you are using and what computer you are using. I was not able to open up the attachment you posted. As Eric suggested, can you attach a zip file or a screen capture?

Honestly, no-one is trying to be critical, it is just incredibly helpful for anyone trying to answer your question to know what version of Chief you are running and what computer specs you have. There are different work arounds and answers for different versions of Chief. Thanks!

You're welcome! A few tricks that help me: Choose one topic and book only an hour. Write down your questions beforehand. Have a working plan open and ready to go so your trainer can see exactly what you need help with. Good luck!

How do I get the oven down and into the base unit?
SusanC replied to johnoc's topic in General Q & A
If I'm understanding correctly, you are trying to fit an oven into a 600mm, or 23 5/8" cabinet? Easiest way I know of to do this: Make the cabinet wider than needed. I made a 30" wide cabinet. I selected a Wolf 30" oven and inserted into cabinet. Double click on the cabinet to open up the dialog box. See attachment showing oven highlighted. While dialog box is open, click on Front/Sides/Back tab. In the "Face Items" section, click on "Appliance". Look a little further down and you will see you Appliance/Door/Drawer with the option to Specify, Edit, or Clear. Click on "Edit". Now a dialog box pops open to allow you to adjust the manufacturer's appliance to any size you need. Once done, click "Ok". See attachment showing 2 dialog boxes open. Now go up to "General" tab on far left and size the cabinet down to 600mm. Click "Ok" and you will now have an appliance that fits into your cabinet. See third attachment with oven and cabinet size adjusted down. If you need a quick fix for now without making any adjustments to cabinetry, you can use the Gaggenau BO 450 612 which will fit into a 60cm cabinet without adjustments. Most of the appliances in Chief are geared to American dimensions which are larger than European sizing, but there are a few tricks, like sometimes being able to find an appliance in a manufacturer's catalog that also sell in Europe. Good luck and feel free to ask more questions! -
You are off to a great start with your tile drawings! It can be tricky to figure out how the adjustments work with the pattern and texture of materials. Chief Architect does offer one on one training using your computer via an online meeting with one of their personal trainers. I've met with one of their trainers several times about various topics and found it to be incredibly helpful. Training@chiefarchitect.com Good luck!

Thanks. I see where I made my error. I generated a 3d molding polyline instead of a molding polyline. The 3d molding polyline dbx does not have the option to create a label, but the molding polyline dbx does.
-
I should be able to figure this out, but my searches through the forum and on Chief have not found the answer. How do I get a label to generate on a molding polyline in my plan? The molding polyline shows up on my schedule, but a label does not on show up on my plan. The layer is turned on. Thanks, Susan

And one other bit of info I just learned from another post relating to Plot Line Views... There is a button available for your toolbar called "Update All Views" and nested under that is "Update All Plot Line Views". Always amazed at what I learn on this forum!
-
Thank you so much for pointing out the "Update All Plot Line Views" button. I didn't realize that was an option, just added it to my toolbar, and look forward to using it!
-
This happened to me yesterday and the solution was to send everything to layout as "Plot Lines" instead of "Live View". Try resending each one as a "Plot Line".
-
Ditto!! I just ran into an issue with the latest X14 update and one of the users had already posted the problem and the solution. Very appreciative of everyone here sharing their knowledge and the Chief employees who regularly monitor the forum to answer our questions.

Thanks for posting this. I also started having issues with wonky elevations on the pdf after downloading the X14 update this morning. Re-sending the elevations to layout using Plot Lines instead of Live View fixed the problem. I had a similar issue with X13 and this same fix of using Plot Lines was the solution.

2 thoughts: 1. Are your drivers updated? 2. Have you tried re-booting your computer?

The help desk will be your best bet.

Layout view issue I can't figure out - weird line shows up
SusanC replied to JBi-PDX's topic in General Q & A
Does this happen if you send the elevations to layout as plot lines instead of live views? I had some odd issues happening with my Mac and live views and the help desk had me try sending elevations to layout as plot lines rather than live. Took care of my problems.
