  1. Along with Doug's information above, with the Microsoft OneDrive, you can map that as a native drive to your computer. Though I know dropbox has some neat integration features, the mapped drive is the easiest for me. SyncToy, despite the childish name, is an excellent feature too. FYI a microsoft office subscription is not required for onedrive, just a microsoft account which is free to sign up on.
  2. Here's a possibility. Edit a new exterior wall, swap the outer layer for Chief Architect Core Catalogs -> Materials -> Siding & Paneling ->Log ->Log 1, 2, 3, or 4 and make it the thickness of your logs, I used 2.5". Use the "8-13 half" and "8-13 full" details for the corners. Paint material to match. I experimented with it and it quickly modified one of my plans with a good"ish" appearance. Would have to do something different on window trim.
  3. Eric, In all sincerity you exemplify everything that someone could want in an online forum. Thank you. That was an extremely helpful video. I watched then worked through the steps on my own. I didn't realize how powerful the roof edge join tool was, I've only used it in basic situations.
  4. Wow, Eric, thank you very much. How did you handle that process? Modifying an auto-build or drawing main planes manually then cutting in the small planes. Its so much cleaner than anything I could create. I'm going to try and deconstruct in the AM and figure out how to do that myself. I'll also shoot an ortho of the rear view to them. Taking out the patio roof really changed the look of it, don't know if they've "seen" that yet.
  5. I had to give up and send this back to the designer to change the roof plan. I really wanted to demonstrate to the designer and builder how quickly this could be mocked up in CA. The builder wants the covered patio roof removed, and that little modification mucks up a bunch of the roof lines in the back. I created the outline of the house and changed ceiling heights on rooms as needed. It also has 9:12 side pitch, 7:12 front to back. My attempt is in the .plan file. Some of the roof planes, even on 9:12 spec'd walls, auto-build at 7:12. The roof is a mess compared to the original designers. I'm pretty sure the designer just uses some manner of 2-D drawing program for his designs. He and the builder have had me model a couple for a "what would the interior look like" type question, this would really show off the programs ability. Any pointers would be greatly appreciated. elevs.pdf roof layout.plan Roof Print.pdf
  6. I think the fact you posted on this forum indicates which way you're leaning. As an AutoCad user with "some" experience in CA, CA is definitely the program I would recommend.
  7. You should sign up for email alerts from NewEgg (online retailer) and MicroCenter (box store with online presence). Both frequently offer smoking deals on video cards. And definitely after new-gen models are released. I want to say the 1070ti in my sig was around $400 after a mail in rebate. FYI, if you're doing this yourself, which I recommend, make sure your case has enough room. I have a component and had to rearrange the innards to fit that absurdly large card in, some might not work in a manufacturer case..
  8. @chief58, the old versions on my locker are gone as well, X6 license. However, the old computer that I have it active on still functions appropriately and seems to be an active license. Guess I will make sure not to deactivate it ever (not that the computer ever gets used).. I was actually surprised when I upgraded that they told me I would be free to use both licenses. Seems like they are cleaning up their license process.
  9. Situation: I created several linetypes for a drawing on my home computer (just plain dashed lines with labels). On my office computer, I want to duplicate the linetype and modify for a new linetype. Though I can see the linetype in the drawing, it does not automatically populate library. I thought there might be a simple "add to library" button but cannot find where that might be. Is there a solution short of copying the linetypes from machine to machine? I do access drawings from a server, but loaded libraries on separate machines. Is it possible to point a User library to a different location (i.e. server) separately from the mfg, bonus, and core libraries?
  10. Is anyone aware of a free or pay to play kitchen equipment catalog? Basic commercial sinks (triple basin), refrigerators, prep tables etc? I searched ye olde google with no results. Don't need a specific manufacturer necessarily, but if there is one available that would be great.
  11. Off topic, but up til about 3 months ago I had an old Pace Plotter with a standalone Win95 machine that I would have gladly given to someone here for free. Worked as far as I know (did when I took it offline around '04). Nothing in the world of modern paper printing can touch the beauty of ink on mylar prints. Traded it for some vintage stereo work so win-win.
  12. I upgraded to X10 earlier this year from X6. The X6 version ran perfectly smooth on my Windows 7 machine. I expected Chief to remove access when I upgraded, but in the conversation with Chief, they said they would let me retain access to the license in the digital locker. It doesn't really mean much as most of my files have been saved to X10 now, but I don't think you'll have any issue with using it again. Just try to find your old install disc.
  13. Edit->Preferences Basic Tools - "use fixed resolution for snapshot tool images" I believe default is 72pixels/inch, I use 300ppi. I do have to reduce size when importing but am much more pleased with the quality. I have also done the print PDF to png trick above, and there too, I increase the resolution of the virtual print.
  14. Evolution, I assume you are opening the detail and copy/pasting into CA? You might change the resolution of the capture tool in (say Adobe Reader) so when they are pasted into CA, they are much higher resolution.
  15. Joe, Thank you. Looks like I have some work cut out for me in setting it up, but an easy switch afterwards.
  16. It's hard to frame this question, and why my searches haven't turned up much. To set CAD to draw on a specific layer, there is the nifty button "CAD" that does so. Is there such a thing for text? I have a specific layer "Text, Code", that I want to use on a specific set "Code Set". Is there a way to make all "text", "rich text" and "leaders" to draw on the "Text, Code" layer without going into the default settings and creating a new text set and assigning that new text set to that layer? I can do that, but I will often switch between layers as I complete different areas (or during revisions). Having a more speedy, streamlined process would be nice.
  17. Have you tried a basic restart? (not intended as insult in any way). My computer is home built. When I start getting odd reactions in any of my graphics intensive programs, or absolutely loading up my RAM with 8-10 programs at once for several days, sometimes until a lock-up, I just have to do a basic restart. On the surface, there is no indication of memory malfunction, or even overloading, its just not doing what I want it to do. I've found my build less stable than a mfg. unit (but not enough to justify buying an equivalent build outright). I mess with various styles of garage doors and have yet to have a lockup in Chief.
  18. @David, the top of the stairs are partially bumping out and showing spindles and different handrail location where the stairs start crossing the garage wall. I can't figure out how it does that particular action but it has to do with where the wall on the first floor stops. I extended the wall into the garage and it worked appropriately. If I made those walls invisible, it went right back to the spindles showing and the handrail bumped out. Maybe with that little additional information someone more knowledgeable than me could step in.
  19. Chopsaw, that is indeed the dialog box I am attempting to modify. I change the values in that box, but after closing out of the edit box, nothing is reflected in the plan (needed) or in 3-D (checked just in case it was showing up there. I will research modifying symbols in that manner to find out if I'm doing something fundamentally wrong. Edited all three axis lengths individually, through a variety of lengths. None produced any actual change in the appearance. Though the changes "remained" when I went back in to edit mode.
  20. Thank you for the replies folks. I attempted the creative stretching in the "edit object" -> "sizing" dialogue, but it doesn't appear to change the symbol in plan. Deleting the surface doesn't give me the option to move the mounts. The object stays combined, just with the surface gone. I would like to be able to explode the object, like the opposite of the architectural block command. Attached is what I'm trying to accomplish. I would like to make the symbols work so I don't have a bunch of individual rooms in a single restroom.
  21. Is it possible to unblock the bathroom partition "sets"? Specifically "ADA right"? This would be a very handy fixture to use, but I need a wall stretched an additional 18 inches. If I simply drag to the needed location, it stretches along the block rather than just a wall. It would be very handy to manipulate individual objects rather than creating the restroom partitions by hand.
  22. I use end to end and point to point dimensions quite frequently. Is there a setting that would permit me locating both the end points as well as the text placement all in one "move"? Currently, I click one end where to place, release left click on the other end, but it drops the dimension line right there. I then have to click again on that dimension (which can be hard to select depending on how much stuff is in the way) and drag it out from the wall. I would really like to know if there is a setting to set dimensions similar to roof planes. Click, drag, release, (locate) click. Also, is there a method to permanently relocate the "Living Area" calculation? It sits right on top of the outer auto dimension. Every time I move it out of my way, if I change anything involving the dimensioned object, it pops right back to where it was.
  23. I posted something very similar on a previous older post, but: I would recommend using onedrive, which can be a mapped network drive without any virtual local folders or after-work-completed sync. As a mapped drive, the entire thing can also be backed-up with Windows built-in SyncToy (a good program despite the childish name). I suspect (though I don't personally use it in this method) that this could store all the various referenced library files as a central repository.
  24. Apologies, resurrecting due to my former life as a necromancer... (and for future google searches) You don't say what the building is, but might could consider decorative concrete forms. Stained and sealed afterwards can make them attractive with variegated colors (acid stains). In my neck of the cemetery masonry work is very pricey (even on a buddy discount). I have no data on cost/availability forms but I certainly follow the keep it simple philosophy. It can not be mistaken for anything but a formed concrete wall but a way to dress up a plain one without the complication of veneer.
