What are CAD Block instances?

There are times it doesn't work for me (annoying) and can probably reproduce those but most of the time it works OK.

Why no stair trim against wall in short upper segment?
HumbleChief replied to GeneDavis's topic in General Q & A
Tried a bunch of options but that upper section wouldn't generate 'Trim Against Wall' as if it simply isn't sensing the 'wall'. Not much help I'm afraid but even in the 3D preview of the stair section it isn't generating the trim, which it usually does. -

Is it possible to create a deck with a roof?
HumbleChief replied to TonyWed's topic in General Q & A
As a long time user, along with the other long time users who have commented, what you are asking Chief to accomplish is a very, easy task especially for long time users. I also remember when I first started using Chief (over 20 years ago) and I was really confused by the way it worked and it took a bit of time to understand its paradigm. I've posted a plan for your review to help your understanding of Chief's ways and methods. Doesn't change the advice from above that suggests you dig in and learn Chief but rest assured it can handle most any design challenge we can throw at it.ROOF PLAN.plan 1309084177_ROOFPLAN.plan -
Plan view labels as callouts on layout: how to lose the callout

DOH...Thanks Chop, very much appreciated.

Is there a setting that will keep the horizontal distance the same as the vertical distance varies with multi copy? Looks like the Evenly Distribute setting allows for a little more flexibility.
-
Wow, Robert that is really good news. Glad you all got it figured out.
-
Thanks Michael, watched the video like 4 times as well as others but if you notice that older version has no field for stem wall height which probably adds some flexibility but also some confusion for us duller knives in the drawer.
-
Thank you and probably true as long as the stem wall height is also set to the same value as the floor height - something I keep forgetting thinking that the floor height is what sets the floor height.
-
THANK YOU DAVID! I forgot the stem wall height setting - it was set to 0. DOH.

Been working on this split entry for hours and tried to follow a Chief video but cannot seem to get this split entry correct. Any help GREATLY appreciated. Couldn't make the file any smaller so here's a DB link. https://www.dropbox.com/s/5ybs8re5bbwodix/SPLIT ENTRY.plan?dl=0

How does one get color swatches to show on the toolbar

Here's a thread that shows a VERY slow plan file. Forgot I had this problem. Turned out (in this specific case only) Auto framing roof and floor on a fairly complex model was the culprit.
-
Not intending to be trite in any way and can't know your business model of course but can you post a plan that's giving the problems? DropBox, OneDrive or other means so others might take a look?
-
This seems to be a pretty serious clue to the problem.

Cannot get x14 roof Overframe Feature to work
HumbleChief replied to DOLTom's topic in General Q & A
Yeah, pretty easy to do manually. I was a bit fooled thinking it would be an automatic operation, as Chief attempts most things, but it's nice to have the framing correct for over built roofs, or for cal-fill roofs as we call them here in er..cal. -
I have a template plan file brought over from X13 (maybe even X12?) that I start every new plan from. Never technically 're-use' a plan.
-
Nice work Gene. Glad you got it figured out.
-
Have not experienced any 'slowness' here.
-
Can you increase the depth of the landing? Auto adjust works too.

Cannot get x14 roof Overframe Feature to work
HumbleChief replied to DOLTom's topic in General Q & A
Thanks Ryan, seems to work OK with just a roof plane but the roof plane also seems like it needs to be manually pulled down from its auto build configuration, then over built. I have a feeling the OP (from his plan at least) was expecting the over build to be an auto build function, like I did when I first tried it. Wonder what others have learned. -
Cannot get x14 roof Overframe Feature to work
HumbleChief replied to DOLTom's topic in General Q & A
Apologies but I don't understand the comment? Is there a way to 'over frame' automatically? Knowing Chief that would not be an unreasonable expectation but I can't seem to find the method? Also could not find a 'framing group' for roofs, only for floor and ceilings. Curious have you tried the over frame tool?
