  1. I've just installed x7 on a Surface 3(new non pro version). It's running better than I expected it would. My view is for primarily gathering as built. A small ultrabook works too but I'm always looking for sleeker quicker more refined advantage. I had a pro version when they first came out and it was just too big to legitimately use as a tablet holding it for extended periods while walking a site so I returned it since it had no advantage over having my dell xps 13 on the site. this new surface 3 looks like it might fit the bill for the elusive 1 trip accurate as built.
  2. Well that's not really a resolution. I've used CA on several macs and only one did I have this enlarge PDF phenomenon and I really tried to come up with an answer and to no avail. for whatever it's worth is was a refurbished purchased through the apple website(I ended up returning it). considering that the same file behaved similar on several other machines I believe the problem was with the mac and not CA. I've had plenty of other annoyances working on macs when it comes to PDF files too like ridiculously large file exports to name one big one. I'm writing this post on a brand new 13" macbook right now. I like macs but they're are too unreliable and unsupported for serious CAD work in my opinion.
  3. Did any resolution come of this? I had this same problem and ultimately had to go back to PC for my CA needs. neither CA or Apple could figure it out in the end.
  4. Bootcamp will not run third party drivers. you'll be relegated to the windows/intel drivers which can be a disadvantage over running a windows primary machine particularly with battery life. I tried to make the switch and had to go back. I have a macbook too and use for fun and to change up my experiences in computing but I'd be losing it if I had to make serious construction documents and permit submittals bootcamping or even worse running VM in a mac only. I seriously wouldn't recommend it. If you want to make a switch you need to maintain a PC machine and ease into the change unless your plans are basic and you don't make your primary living running design work and meeting deadlines. Just my opinion.
  5. another biggie is that CA on mac can't import .skp files. If you use sketchup alot for custom symbols it's kinda a hassle.
  6. I had purchased a macbook pro 15" 2.3 ghz w/ the gt 750 gpu and found its performance lackluster. It also had alot of trouble with PDF's. I ended up returning it. Funny thing is the 11" macbook air I bought for my wife ran CA surprisingly well. Not as good as the 15" but considering the difference in specs I was quite surprised at how marginal the performance was over the lil' bitty air w/ hd graphics and 4gb ram. My windows experience with CA has been quite predictable when moving from one spec to another but mac seems to have no rhyme or reason. Some guys are reporting satisfactory results while others lackluster results that are not comensurate with specs. I did just pick up the new 13" macbook pro with the force touch trackpad and broadwell chip so we'll see how that goes. Of course I'll install CA on it and play around with it but I didn't neccasarily buy it for CA but rather because I'm a computer head and wanted a new toy. My windows desktop is where the real work happens particularly when i need to render after finalizing my models.
  7. Is there any way to change a symbols category after it's been created. I have some "fixture interior" symbols that would make more sense to be "furniture interior" category. I can't find any way to edit their category other than when you create it. is it the case that I actually have to delete it and "re-symbolize" it again with the other category? Thanks,
  8. 1. I want to use the bullet numbers in paragraph options in the rich text dialog box but i want to have a space between each numbered line. seems to work til i click ok then i get a whole list of number 1's. I want to be able to have columns where my notes end on a given number in column 1 then pick up on the next number at the top of the next column but no go? This doesn't have to be automatic of course. I just want to be able to specify what number i want it start from. 2. I want to be able to have the edit layout page information title to be able to be multi-line. i have to get creative to try to name some of my sheets that will fit on a single line. 3. I want a centerline symbol added to the special characters macros. 4. I want to be able to display callouts on all floors like cameras do. 5. I want to link callouts to a layout box so if the page numbers change the callout will update like cameras displayed as callout do. I really like the software OK. not trash talking here but like most of us as I use it further and further into it's capabilities I'm like "hey, why can't i do this" Community, please let me know if i'm crazy and just not seeing something. Thanks!!
  9. i had the same problem. This website helped me a lot http://www.danrodney.com/mac/index.html
  10. I have experienced inconsistencies in how chief handles imported pdf's in layout. When imported into layout on my wife's air they show fine. When I import pdf's into layout on pro the layout box is the proper size but the pdf only displays the upper left quadrant of the page in the full layout box area.
  11. Works right on my wifes Macbook Air. Called apple customer support and that was no help. have tried reinstalling chief but still shows the same. I guess next i need to reinstall OSX. I don't get it. It can't be a hardware issue. it must be a software issue.
  12. Just doesn't work for me. I've tried to resize it manually and then reset it. uncheck aspect ratio, reset cropping and all combinations in between. This is just nuts. Why does it work perfectly fine on every other computer but this Macbook. Haven't heard anything yet from chief. I wonder if they are unable to reproduce the problem.
  13. That same page looks like this in my machine and I've spent a couple hours now trying to figure out what is going on.
  14. Probably slow because there's a ton of pdf's. My experience is that bogs it down loading the referenced files. You're thumbnail shows it right though. My machine is reading something funny. Thanks for checking it out Glenn. dshall, are you running mavericks on your machine?
  15. Glenn, all of the pdf's may not be saved with plan. Are you seeing some of them and they are showing normally? As in typical 8.5 x 11 page? If so then clearly it's something to do with the way my machine is handling them I'm thinking. Clearly, because it worked perfectly on my desktop back home(Windows) but haywire on this new MacBook.
  16. Right, Huge visually. I import a PDF that is 8.5 x 11 and the layout box is produced at 8.5 x 11 but the PDF in it is only showing a corner of the page as if the PDF is huge and i can only see a portion of it in the layout box window. I talked to Chief support and they didn't have any quick answer and suggested i open a support ticket which i did.
  17. Anyone have this issue? I'm out of town and down at the Hotel Del and trying to be cool with my new Macbook Pro working on some files that originated with my windows machine back home. When i opened my layout i found that any imported PDF's were huge in their layout boxes so i could only see a portion of them. I thought well I'll just ignore that and maybe it's a file path issue and when i open back up at home all will be well but then it happened with new PDF's I've imported here that I know are local to this machine. So what gives? anyone else new on Mac have this issue? i've opened a support ticket as I'm out of trouble shooting ideas here. 404VermontLAYOUT_Building.layout
  18. so I loaded up chief X6 on my 11" macbook(1.3Ghz i5, 4GB ram) air I recently bought for my wife and downloaded the riverstone plan. I am very surprised to see how well it ran chief! it takes about 2.5 minutes to render a full overview line drawing. Now compare that to my desktop that runs a 4Ghz i7, 16GB ram and it took 1min. 15 sec. to render. macbooks got a haswell chip and desktop has a sandy bridge, also the macbook is dual core compared to quad on the desktop. I would've thought the desktop would not only be twice as fast but like 3 or 4 times faster but no! I also connected this goofy "ergonomic" mouse by Anker I bought that didn't work out and got my mouse questions answered. works as it should. If chief does this well on the lil' macbook air then it should be a really pleasant time sipping latté down at the coffee house with the new 15" macbook pro with the discrete graphics that I've just gotta have now despite that I'm a little too old to be a hipster fanboy...
  19. My issues with the rich text boxes desktop(win 7 pro) to laptop(win 7 home) are the same file and uses chief blueprint. Also I'm curious about the mac has using a mouse. Doesn't mac mouse only have 1 button? Do you have to do a bunch more clicking through menus then with a pc mouse that has five buttons and scroll wheel.
  20. Hi Steve, Thanks for sharing about the duo. I wasn't looking at these because I didn't like the kickstand but after reading your feedback it makes sense that it actually is a benefit. I wonder about the duos power brick. Is it average or is it cumbersome and what kind of battery life are you getting out of it? Thanks
  21. Great Thread! I've been really salivating over macbooks lately. I bought a 17.3" MSI GT70 and it's a great laptop but as it turns out the point of me buying a laptop which is engaging facility to be mobile when needed is totally missing the mark because I find every reason on earth not to drag that godzilla of a laptop with me anywhere. Another odd thing that has bummed me out is that rich text elements change between the two machines. For example, my list of abbreviations are tabbed at each line to create the look of the two columns. If I open it on my laptop several lines will not be lined up and I'll need to delete or add tabs to line them up and then I go to the desktop and of course they don't line up again. Other rich text elements particularly leader lines will be weird and I'll need to open them and click ok in the dbx without doing anything and then it'll jump back to the size and lines it's supposed to be. I bought an 11" macbook air for my wife a few weeks ago and it's just so portable and feels so nice I started thinking about getting myself a macbook pro 13" or 15" version since I was nervous about the air not having enough juice but it's great to hear Doug's been able to use an older air without a problem. I would just use it mildly as a way of being a little productive while traveling around in and out of town, client meetings, having a handy facility while away from my office to make quick edits and shoot out some quick low quality renders to stakeholders and AHJ. One downside is that my sketchup pro license will not transfer to the mac as I understand it and I use sketchup pro and LayOut a fair amount. Well after that rant the bottom line is that if I need to hunt down rich text elements throughout my plans every time I switch then that's gonna bum me out and lower productivity too and will obviate the cost of the switch so has anyone else had any issues like this when moving between machines particularly with rich text elements and moving between Windows and OS X platforms? I could parallel Windows which I don't necessarily mind. If I actually use it and get more done the cost of buying a different laptop will be an insignificant matter.
  22. So I've installed a second gtx 680 and setup sli. There was a new driver available so I've installed that and I've uninstalled and reinstalled X6. I've run through several operations that seemed to cause instability and haven't had an issue yet. One question, can you switch back and forth with the same file from PC to Mac or once you create a file in one do you have to stay with that? I did talk to tech but wasn't much help. To tough to diagnose over a phone call
  23. You're right and it's just ridiculous but I'M REALLY GETTING DESPERATE!! X6 crashes on me regularly. it's draggy slow and if I don't run as admin it takes up to a full minute to open help. I wouldn't really care about the help thing as i can just open it once, but the crashing and the lag during use is driving me insane and affecting my productivity and quality of use. If I could go back to X5 on my current projects I would. X6 has some nice new features but if i can't use if effectively what's the point?? Is this is?? Do we just deal with it until hopefully X7 works right or is there new updates scheduled?? anyone heard anything?? It's kinda getting silly that we're all looking at our hardware now trying to figure out if it's something with our systems. let's face it, everybody's computer didn't somehow all go awry spontaneously all at the same time... Really Blows... I get that it's a challenge to make software and it's a great program when it works. The previous versions have been rock solid stable has been my experience so i don't want to be all down on Chief. I believe in the product and tech has always been very attentive but something is up with X6.
  24. I'm running a GTX 680 and i'm gonna SLI another GTX 680 I have on order. I already have my sandy bridge OC'd to 4 Ghz and i may push that up to 4.2 but i'm not too sure about pushing it and will need to make sure i can get good stability.I was running as administrator and that was making the help file open up fast but now Park has got me freaked out about leaving that setting on so I took it off and of course now i have to wait nearly a full minute for the help file to open up. I'll let you know if I find any better performance with double the GPU power.
