As far as i know you can't bluetooth dimensions straight into chief. I can't hold a laptop and effectively enter data while simultaneously shooting the Disto in the other hand. If need be I can tuck my Nexus under my arm if I need to grab a call or whatever during the measuring. As far as building my plans on site, that's a no go for me. it would take me longer to be walking around and going back to a mobile workstation to be working in chief and then walking around again and/or moving my laptop to the next room and where will i put it(on the floor?!) or where will i put my laptop when i'm measuring outside or huff a rolling table around and then of course i also need to have a camera too. I've tried the laptop out on the site thing and for me it was just too cumbersome and old school. I don't know much about room planner but i'm not a mac user anyway and it only works with Ipad not android tablets but also i do alot of zoning submittals and i need to be able to measure the property and surrounding buildings usually for site plans, shadow studies, etc. And just from what i've seen it seems Redstick is better suited for that than room planner anyway. When i'm out on the site measuring for zoning and construction as-builts i'm really not concerned about where i might put a couch or what kind of flooring or wallpaper will be in the new/remodeled structure so it really depends on what kind of work you do to i suppose.

I have the disto and i love it. i use the cheap version of Redstick SiteCAD on my Nexus 10. Very easy to tote the Nexus with the Disto. I don't even bother to bring paper and pencil with me anymore(you can attach notes into Redstick). and I also take all my pictures with the Nexus too. The Redstick app is is just very simple and easy to use with a finger. I've thought about trying to measure in the field toting my laptop around and it pains me to think about it. After I'm done making my layout in Redstick shooting all the measurements with my Disto to my tablet i can export and email myself a DWG and import that into chief back in the office and start tracing over it and snapping all my walls, doors, windows, stairs etc. into location. it's super accurate. the most accurate plansets i've ever done over the old hand measuring and pencil and graph paper method. I used to dread field measuring now i enjoy it.

I use Google drive and after I work on plan say on the desktop and save it then go to my laptop I find strange things happen. At first I thought I was just making corrections but after updating the same things more than once i realized that it happens consistently each time particularly with text elements. I have a list of abbreviations and i line them all up in one computer which means on some of them i have to make them not line up in the DBX in order to have them line up right in the layout page then when i open the file on the other computer they're not lined up again. so i line them up on that computer and when i open it on the other...well you get the point. another issue is rich text, i'll have the auto width and height checked with one computer and one line of text then when i open the file with the other the one line will be squeezed and text wrap into two lines and i'll have to open the text and check the auto width and height again to make it right. the only difference between the computers is that the desktop runs win 7 pro and the laptop runs home premium. could this OS version difference cause something? they are both win 7. and also the rich text layer goes goofy too. if i have anno set for rich text set then i go to the other computer and rich text in that anno will be set to some random who knows what layer. I have it go to all kinds of different random layers and i need to go in and reset it. funny thing is that it seems to only happen with rich text. the list of abbreviations is rich text too. when i had it set to just text the line up would never waiver but i wanted to use some ALT code symbols in my list so i made it rich text since the ALT codes don't work in the normal text DBX. it will show the ALT symbol in the DBX but when i hit ok to go back to the layout it just turns into a question mark. anyone have any similar issues going on?

Poor graphic performance with X6 viewer
Victor_Rasilla replied to Bill_Emery's topic in General Q & A
must be settings in the Nvidia control panel. and try getting of software edge smoothing if you do have it set -
I don't think I have a problem with the hardware on my end. but what do I know? i'm just a nail-banging contractor with empty budweiser cans rolling around my dog in the back of my truck.... I was also thinking that it could be something related to working on X5 plans that are now resaved in X6. I have yet to use a clean new plan created on X6 for any legnth of time to see if crashes don't occur in that scenario. EDIT: I've also changed auto-archiving from daily to hourly at the suggestion of chief tek. and switched from every 5 minutes to every 4 minutes.

IS there a way to not to display door casing?
Victor_Rasilla replied to REP_SW's topic in General Q & A
For Global instead of door by door Defaults>Doors>Interior Door>uncheck has jamb. the in casing uncheck has interior casing. but you already are not showing casing in that picture. i prefer showing all the little parts in the 2d personally -
2nd that, No Problem whatsoever with X5, had just as many windows/3d views as ever with X5 and now since X6 chronic crashes i've tried to limit open windows shut down windows and it just sometimes makes for a little less efficient workflow. I don't want to have to baby X6 and i don't think i have a computer problem and stay really on top of my settings/optimizations

I've had problems with crashes too in X6. The first time it happened I didn't realize I lost detailing on some section views until after had the plans printed and submitted them to the city. I'm sure I need not explain my displeasure with that situation.

Jim, That's a good idea, I'm gonna give that a try.

Poor graphic performance with X6 viewer
Victor_Rasilla replied to Bill_Emery's topic in General Q & A
Have you verified that the viewer is using the gtx780? You can go into the nvidia control panel and select the programs default card. I've done it before as my X6 did not automatically use the card and defaulted to on board on my laptop but I can't remember the exact steps but it was pretty self explanatory in the nvidia panel -
I like the way the new "active defaults" work but i don't know if I'm missing something or if it still the case that you can't tie the layer to anno. I can make the layer set switch when i select a certain anno but still doesn't seem that i can switch layer set and the anno can be tied to it to switch with it. only switch to "active defaults" for anno when i go layer set switch first.

Need to show 1St and 2nd fl roof together in layout
Victor_Rasilla replied to jaked1's topic in General Q & A
I've had to use CAD blocks of additional elements to show when i'm wanting elements from more than one floor. the ref. layer copied and adjusted is great if it's one floor but say for example on a site plan i want the roof planes to show which may be on a 3rd floor or above but I also want a 2nd floor exterior stair to show but my terrain layer is existing on the first floor. And, maybe i have a basement stairwell that goes down into a full basement on the outside of the foundation wall. i've done several 3 story/full basement whole structure remodels and haven't found any other way around than creating some cad blocks of elements using an all off layer set and then CAD detail from view. it'd be nice if ref layers could stack to show more that one floor EDIT: I just created a CAD from view detail from a "top" full ortho view. 6 years and i never knew that was possible. I thought I could only take them from the elevation/section views. I guess this new forum isn't so bad after all :~)
