  1. Thanks Rob. I didn't realize the invisible wall you were referring to was perpendicular to the railing. Are two invisible walls (one parallel & one perpendicular) necessary to get this "break"? Thanks again for the feedback.
  2. Thanks for the replies. What I'm already doing works quite well and much simpler than what has been proposed. Is there no way to make something other than glass invisible in vector view? Rob - I tried this method first and the invisible walls at the corners kept getting overridden by the railing walls as the posts are only 3.5". That occurred even when I reversed direction.
  3. I want to make my newel posts invisible in standard and vector view, so that I can insert my own 45° posts on a chamfered deck. I have tried creating a symbol and having CA insert them automatically to no avail. So, I created my own material using insulation air gap and all is fine in standard view, but it shows up shaded yellow in vector view. I know I can assign a glass material to the posts and uncheck "opaque window glass" in vector, however, I don't want my actual windows transparent. Any ideas on how to accomplish this?
  4. Glenn & Chris - thanks for your input. Seems I have a couple options. Chris - liked your disclaimer about the framing dimensions. I've run into this a time or two myself...
  5. Glenn - thanks for the reply. I'll give this a try as soon as I get to the office. Do you happen to know if there is a way to display in gray scale with all hatches and fills? As stated above, when I toggle color off, the fills disappear. Kevin
  6. I was wondering if it was possible to have walls use different fills under different layer sets. For example, on working plans the standard walls showing all the layers out of the box are fine. However, on kitchen and bath plans I use walls, normal without walls, layers and want the entire wall volume shaded in a light gray. I can't seem to do this without changing the entire wall definition which messes up my other sets. Any ideas on how to accomplish this? Also, I noticed the color toggle removes any fills when deselected. What I'm looking for is a gray scale representation with the fills desaturated. This is something I thought the color toggle should do, but not the case. I'd appreciate any feedback on the above. Kevin
  7. basketballman - thanks for the reply. I'll give it a shot. Graham - thanks for the tip. This should work!
  8. Thanks Eric. Can you think of a workaround? I've even tried offsetting from second floor ceiling and since the ceiling directly above is sloped, it comes in on an angle. There's got to be a manual way to place these fixtures...
  9. Please select the single light I placed and try moving 42" off front wall using the dimension I have drawn. It jumps to 2nd floor every time - at least on my install.
  10. Did you try moving them once initially placed? Thanks Eric.
  11. I'm trying to layout a recessed light grid in a kitchen design. Whenever I move a recessed light too close to the front exterior wall, it jumps onto the 2nd floor. It's a story and a half home, but the second level is defined as floor 2. This also happens when I draw a CAD line in order to snap into the proper location. I've been trying to find a workaround for over a 1/2 hour - needless to say, quite frustrating. I have attached a zipped file as the size was slightly over the 25MB limit. I'd appreciate any help with this. Thanks, Kevin Baker_Proposed_10-29-19_STRIPPPED.rar
  12. Hey Chopsaw. That's brilliant. Thank you very much for the solution. I did find another way by using straight railing on top of the deck. It wasn't as easy as your solution though. Thanks again! Kevin
  13. Here's the plan. CHF_Chin Proposed_10-22-19_PROPOSED.rar
  14. I've got a screened porch adjacent to an open deck where the posts/railings need to meet up - see images attached. How do I get the posts to line up? When the converging walls snap together, the post is offset. I've spent the last 30 minutes messing around with this. I probably should have drawn them manually if this is the best CA's tools can do... I'd appreciate any advice. Thanks.
  15. It is a great tool. Glad I asked as these types of tips aren't in the training videos.
  16. Glenn's method worked too, but I had to reposition all the walls and windows. When I first cut the wall using Michael's suggestion, the walls and windows shifted down to the floor joists; however, when I pasted the wall back into place, everything came back up to the correct height off the floor platform.
  17. Michael - thanks. That worked great! Kevin
  18. Chris - thanks for the reply. I built the window manually as I needed a triple. I used the method as described here by Eric: chieftalk.chiefarchitect.com/topic/15217-window-bumpout Attached is the file... CHF_Hogge_PROPOSED_09-28-19.plan
  19. Thanks Eric. What floor do you recommend I move the deck to? Floor 0? Also, what is the best method to move plan objects to different floors? This isn't going to mess up my roof? Thanks again!
  20. I could really use some help on this one. I've been through all the wall settings and room settings as pertains to the box window. I looked in the deck DBX - there doesn't seem to be an option to prevent the cut. I thought there might be a similar solution to when this happens to the terrain, but no such option.
  21. What setting do I need to change to avoid this? Thanks!
  22. Mick - thanks for taking the time to explain. I can see where the method I prefer would be problematic on more complicated buildings. For this particular job, I am just remodeling a bathroom and needed some quick walls (room layout only). Yes, my original settings were incorrect, but I got them sorted. I don't follow you on not needing to change the resize about option. This was the only option that allowed me to input dims and have them correspond to the inner drywall layer. When set at default, it would draw from the outside whether I drew clockwise or counter. I'm still getting my head around using layers and saved plan views. I can see where they can be a powerful tools, but am still a bit confused by what dims to put on what layer. I was going to spend tomorrow doing exactly what you suggest by making copies of the 1/4 annos and 1/4 dim defaults. Do changing these defaults only effect the current plan or is it a global change that occurs? I don't want to mess things up for the sake of an experiment. Thanks for the file. I'll take a look tomorrow. I appreciate that everyone is so helpful on this forum...
  23. Mick - thanks for the input. I am familiar with CA's recommended method and I don't agree. I don't see how this can be faster than entering the length correctly from the start. I've been doing it this way in AutoCAD for years - perhaps that's why this is more comfortable for me.
  24. Thanks again Michael. Dermot - I appreciate the link. Will look at that tonight.
