See pics attached. Designated porch as a "Garage" room type. Auto rebuild foundation is "on". Made walls invisible...BOOM...foundation disappears. Chief needs to fix this....or give us the option to have a foundation under the porch slab. Yes...you can manually draw in the foundation but is 2017...and it's a foundation wall. Please...
-
Not in Indiana...all porches that carry some load...and even some that don’t have foundation walls/footings. Unless the home is slab on grade.
-
I always draw the foundation manually also...because CA refuses to create the automatically. In Indiana if a porch has a roof over it the porch slab will have a continuous foundation wall/footing under it. We we experience deep frost (aka frozen) ground in winter.

When creating a porch and using a railing wall type...why does CA not automatically create a foundation under the porch? I've tried to trick the software by drawing a room using a standard exterior wall, then create the foundation....then change the wall type to "Railing". The foundation disappears. If the porch has a roof over it...some type of a foundation will generally be required. Seems crazy to me...I think CA needs to either fix this...or give us the option to select "foundation required". If I'm missing something...let me know. In the pic below...(2) simple porches. I have automatically rebuild foundations turned on. As you can see...as soon as the wall type is changed to "railing"...the foundation disappears. Why?

Perry - would you post a PDF view of your typical live sections to show us how well this works. A picture is worth...well, you know. Thanks!

Ceiling heights changing in more than one room

Try recreating in a simple plan? -
Joey Martin used all "live" sections...which, if you look at a set of his plans were very comprehensive. For me...if I'm only including some basic sections I'd use CDFV (cad detail from view)

Very clear Michael...thanks! I do find it incredible that a software as powerful and fully developed as CA is...that this is the best and only way to accomplish this task.
-
I watched...but it doesn't look automatic to me.
-
This is what I'm talking about...can CA do this?
-
That's what I was looking for. Thanks!
-
Yes...but that was 1974. Certainly there has been an advancement?

Speaking of "Circles". Is there a way to draw a CAD Circle and as your drawing it specify either the exact radius or the diameter you want? Let say I want a Circle 10' in diameter...I select the circle tool and draw, hit "tab"...and it brings up the "X" and "Y" dialogue box. If I put 10' in both...I don't get a 10' radius or diameter.
-
No...not "lines" between two circles. I'm trying to draw a circle tangent to two circles. I know how to do it the "long" way...just wondering if Chief has a tool like AutoCad..."Tangent/Tangent/Radius". Which...with just a few clicks will draw a circle tangent to 2 circles. Thanks!
-
Is there a tool in CA that will automatically create a tangent arc between two circles...see attached pic? I've tried the Arc Tool..."Start/Tangent/End Arc...but, either that isn't the correct tool or I don't know how to use it (very possible).

Just read this post...and realized the railing had to be specified as "panels". It works...but, its finicky to say the least. Move it in or out just a bit too far and it doesn't follow the stair. I was selecting "solid" (not panels)...needless to say, this is confusing. Solid doesn't follow stairs.
-
The stair tool in CA is not very useful...Chief should do a series of videos to show users how to accomplish simple stair task. I think those of us who purchased Chief thought the stair tool would be much more "refined"...alas, it's probably the weakest area in CA. I have attached a simple test plan. I placed a simple rail using "rail follows stair". - Why do the balusters not meet the tread? - The balusters spacing stinks...we need the ability to place a number of balusters per stair tread...and the option to space them. - Also...can someone tell me why at the top of the stairs the newel posts don't connect as they would when you build them in the field? It's clumsy at best... Also, I created a "solid railing"...and selected "rail follows stair". But, this option for this style rail does not seem to work...at least it didn't for me. See attached PIC. Thanks Eric...I kept thinking it was an "attic wall"...but, it's really the top of the invisible wall. I'd have never thought of that...thanks again.
-
For some reason I cannot get an attic wall to generate above an invisible wall in the attached plan. I did a test using an OOB Chief Template plan...and the attic walls work as advertised. Therefore...it seems I've messed with a setting somewhere in my template plan. Can someone look at the attached test plan and see if you can discern what I've done...thanks in advance. Modeling a repeating pattern that conforms to an arc/circle
SNestor replied to Alaskan_Son's topic in Tips & Techniques
Amazing...thanks Michael! -
Michael, This line in your post was really the point of my asking the question about how long it took you to model that wagon wheel. I find your generosity to this forum absolutely incredible. Not only do you know the software inside and out...you produce videos that are clear, precise and very easy to follow. Every time I see you've posted a video - I make sure to watch...and I'm always amazed. No way could I ever model something as complex as that wagon wheel...and I was stunned when I saw you had posted the symbol. I knew it had to have taken you an incredible amount of time. When I saw what you had done...my reaction was "why would Michael invest the time to do this?" Hey...I'm happy/thrilled that you do, don't get me wrong. However, I think there are a lot of guys on this forum - like me - just happy when we can get a roof on a plan and it looks the way we intended it to look. Thanks again for all your time and effort in helping us all get better. I can't say enough how grateful I am for you, Scott, Joe, Solver...etc. You all have helped me so much I cannot begin to tell you. Donation on it's way...

Inquiring minds want to know...just how long did it take for you to model this fixture? i would love a video on how to model the decorative trim at the base of the globes. Incredible.
-
Yep...I got it. I created new layer sets for each view. Problem solved. Thanks for helping me out!
-
I figured it out... The answer is to create new layer sets that turn on the individual layers as needed. Therefore: - Layer Set #1: Base Plan layers - Layer Set #2: Base Plan layers + Fire Pit layer - Layer Set #3: Base Plan layers + Fire Pit layer + Trellis layer
-
Is there a way to send multiple floor plans to a layout page...with different layers turned on for each time the plan is sent to layout? What I have is a design of an outdoor room...option #1 adds a fire pit. Option #2 adds a trellis over the fire pit. I want to send (3) copies of the floor plan to the same layout...that shows the (3) options. But...it's seems when I turn on the different layers...all the plans show the same thing. Am I missing something? Thanks!
