Help with complicated roof.

Recommended Posts

Hello, We are having a hard time getting  the design program to do the roof right. We have tried with Sketchup and it got the closest. It's hard to describe I have attached a few pics with a decent idea of what we are trying to do.

The Garage is a shed roof as well as the breeze way, but they are at different angles. The house is a butterfly style with the V running at a angle. WE do not care what the pitch ends up being on any of the roofs.

Anyone know how to do this. I have been trying for hours and the program goes crazy every time. Esp with the all 3 roofs at different angles with each other. I have attached a copy of the plan we made and some pics from sketchup because that program got the closest to what we are trying to do.

Thanks

Chris

Here is a single roof plane on a 24x24 plan, pitch set to 4", baseline angle set to -10 degrees.  Its mirror image is all that's needed to complete your desired shape.  Your pitch and baseline angle can be changed to suit.

Thanks for the reply. The 2 high adjoining walls have to stay the same height. In your example they are not. I'm about to give up. The software seems to make wild changes on it's own. Wish I could set the outside wall heights at a fixed number and then make the roof fit those walls. But what happens is the program is automatically making changes as it sees fit.

Guess you either have to be come a expert at Chief or just build cookie cutter homes. Sketchup did allow me to make the elevations but that program is very limited when it comes to building design.

Okay here's some pics of what I've got. In roof V3 the roof plane on the left is almost perfect for what we need. The pic V4 shows the back view so the roof plane on the right is good..

The problem is when I try to move the roof planes together the program goes nuts and messes everything up. You'd think you could just click on the corner and drag it over but that's not what happens. NO matter what I do the roof planes will not come together.

Pick the plane you like call it roof 1.  Open DBX and note fascia ht and ridge ht.

Open the DBX of the other roof plane and set fascia ht = to roof 1.

Now select radio button so you lock fascia ht.

Now enter ridge ht = to roof 1.   And hit ok.  (pitch will be what it needs to be.

Now join them.

Made a quick screen cap.  Went slow so you could follow.   Had to cut audio, as I have kids going crazy around here ;)

Here are a couple of videos on figuring pitch when you know wall heights.

My youngest is home sick today and the rest of the family left to a Christmas get together so I decided to step into the office for a bit and putz around while he takes a nap on the couch.  Here's a little video with some of my thoughts on the matter.  Hope you all have a wonderful Christmas :)

Thank you guys for the help. Both videos were great. One of the reasons my dimensions for the house got crazy was I was trying everything to draw this and started moving walls around. Now I know how to make this roof work I can go  and get things back the way they need to be. Think the biggest thing I wasn't doing was locking any of the heights down. I kept focusing on the Roof Options under the Wall Specifications for the outside walls. Now I know those don't matter.

Hello, I’m needing help lowering the roof. I’m trying to make a 50x80x16 shop with the pitch lower than the default gable height. I’m new to this and I’m hoping this software will help build our dreams on our farm. I want the look of the attached photo with the front being the 80 ft side.

How do I put a roof return on this roof? Can't find a video about it anywhere on the Chief Website... is there another name for it?

See attachment, and where I drew in black.

I'm using X11 premier on a mac -- I have an exterior garage wall (with a centered garage door) and a gable end -- I'd like to split the attic wall of the gable end into 3 parts -- the central region above the garage door, and the left and right, to have a different material above the garage door.

I have Default Settings > Roof > Auto Rebuild Roof set to Off
I have Default Settings > Framing > Automatically Build Floor and Ceiling Framing Off on all framing types.
I have Default Settings > Walls > General Walls > Auto Rebuild Attic Walls set to Off

If I delete the roof and ceiling planes with Build > Roof > Delete [X] and then use the Build > Roof > Build Roof ... dialog to rebuild the roof and attic from scratch -- I leave the Auto Rebuild Roofs set to Off, to be clear -- and then edit the resulting gable roof on the attic layer, I can split it twice to produce the three separate wall sections, but once I change the exterior material on any of the sections, the three wall segments get replaced with a single wall again.  The new wall has my selected material, but that does me no good as I need the distinct secgments.

Anyone know what setting do I need to turn off to maintain the manually edited gable end?  Or is this a mac bug?

Or, barring that, does anyone know what approach will let me give the desired finish detail (attached a pic of a freehand elevation)?

I have all these little 'X's can someone please tell me how to get rid of them?  I've been really playing around with the roof and i THINK they are from that but at the same time i have a couple random ones outside where the roof is -- i cannot get them to go away. Help!

      thanks in advance
      Lauren
