Wood framed chimney on roof

Recommended Posts

Hi all. I'm fairly new to the software and have only been using it since October. I have a client who wants a wood framed chimney extruding from the middle of the roof up from the gas fireplace. I've tried a bunch of different options to make this work but can't figure it out. Can someone please tell me how to draw walls on top of the roof?

Thank you!

@dshall  Did a two part video on youtube about this.  He is awesome because he figures it out on the video for you showing you the mistakes of how not to do it in the program and they are very informative.  I just watched this one the other day.

Here is a link for part 1

Read about Roof Cuts Wall At Bottom and Lower Wall Type When Split by Butting Roof.

I imagine the chimney framing extends down to the fireplace below, so the walls are not just sitting on the roof.

Think about the chase as a room -- set to Open Below on the 2nd floor.

First post here, this is my first attempt at roof truss. As you will see in the PDF attached the gables that are on the front of the duplex are being supported by the truss that are running in the vertical direction. I am wondering if this is normal as i cannot seem to create truss for the gables on the font of the home. If there is a more effective means of building roof truss for roofs of this style id love to hear them.

How can I enclose the roof overhang so the beams/trusses aren’t exposed when walking outside from French doors? In the picture I colored in red where I’m trying to not have an open overhang. The overhang is 8’, and I will have structural posts to hold up overhang.

      Hi All.

Still new to the program and figuring things out. I have built an automatic roof and am trying to modify it to be a gable roof instead of the default hip roof. I have watched the various videos on how to do this as well as read through forums and have not been able to figure out why my roof will not adjust to a gable after changing each wall to be a gable setting. I've attached screenshots and uploaded the file. The client only wanted a model for purposes of seeing a new deck/stair option and paint color so the roof isn't the most important thing but I still want it to resemble their house.

      Thanks,

I am trying to create a story and a half main house that has a two story gable roof addition.  I have been able to create the story and a half with a 1 story addition but can't figure out how to add a second story to the addition.  The main part of the house has a 10/12 roof (created by build roof options: move roof up 12', ignore 2nd floor).  The goal is to have the main roof 10/12 and the 2 story addition a 6/12 gable.

Pics below are a quick mockup. One showing the successful story and a half w addition.  The other a bit more unusual configuration that I may not be able to get past the building inspector.
Thanks in advance for any help provided.

Hi, we have a split level home with 2 (meaning double) 2 x 4 exterior walls with a 3.5” air gap in between them for a total (rough) wall thickness of 10.5”. The home has 3 separate roof heights, all with a 5:12 pitch. The home is in central Minnesota (the reason behind the thick walls). I’m just getting started with Home Designer Pro and not sure how to start. I’ve watched some videos, but nothing that would help duplicate our wall design. Do you have some training materials that would help, or someone who could get it started on the software? Thanks for any help you can provide.
