zowie123
Hi all, Please see image: Generally newel post s are either inside or outside of the rim joists. In the rail dbx, we can offset the newels, but then the balusters and rails are wrong. What's the fastest way to resolve this? Thank you, Barry
javatom
Make a new wall type for the rails that includes a main layer that includes 1.5" of "open - no material. If this new 1.5" layer is in with the main layers, it will build the way you want.

zowie123
Well sort of...however then it doesn't look exactly correct in plan view...I had to add 3" to get it to offset by 1.5? But thanks, it works pretty well..
johnny
I thought there was a general offset setting for this???
zowie123
I only found one for the newels, not for the wall?

Nope , it has always been this way in Chief and why there are numerous Threads on Fascia Mounted Railings , GlennW came up with the invisible layer Offset , 2-3 years ago , at least that was when he shared it in a thread of Mine but there was a recent Thread on this too, about a month ago , see below. The "Offset" setting is for those times you want the Rails to pass over the Posts , not in-between them. https://chieftalk.chiefarchitect.com/topic/17243-railings/?do=findComment&comment=144845
zowie123
Hey, thanks for that kbird, appreciate it. Decks are pretty fun to use, but they certainly lack in the details of reality.
