  1. Hello! It's pretty awesome that we can create a U stair in 3 clicks, but does anyone know how to control it? Straight stair one way, straight stair the other way, click at the top where you want the landing landing and voila! But how to space them correctly while doing this? Once you place them, the landing is broken up and it takes many moves to get them to be spaced where they need to be.. Temporary dimensions dimension to the stair which can't be seen through the overlapping rail... Anyway, has anyone figured out how to work this powerful tool efficiently? Example: 36" stair, make one in one direction, then you slide up and make one in the other direction...but you need 1.5" between them to allow hand room where the railing pass each other. So now I'm drawing cad lines and measurements and I'm into with many many clicks. Thank you for considering, Barry
  2. Hi, I had deleted the terrain by accident. Somehow block molding items or Specifically corbel heights are tied to terrain--not good. Would someone at chief please take a look at this? Thank you, Barry
  3. Huh, I'm going to have to wrap my brain around that method...It something like what I'm looking for. Thanks for sharing..Gawdzira!
  4. Hi all, Creating asbuilt of a craftsman with many corbels. If I don't block them they move around independently on z axis from time to time. When I do block them they move around as a group on the z axis--but only when I'm in a rush:) Stuff should not move around--hahah. X8 no floor ht changes, no grade changes, no changes to any height what so ever, they just move up from where they should be once or twice very couple of hours--fun. Anyone know why? Thank you, Barry
  5. Thanks guys I'll give them both a try, Thank you, barry
  6. Hi, I'm thinking I'd like to try more broad brush 3D landscaping --suggestive landscaping rather than do the landscaper's job. Anyone know of a repository for such things? Thank you, Barry
  7. Yes, all plans layouts and textures included and zipped. Sometimes textures are missing when I open a file the second time after zipping and moving. There's something very different from 7 to 8. I do the same thing I've always done and I've only had this issue in 8.
  8. For real world houses, it's only a 10+ year learning curve. I'm soon getting together with a friend who's extremely experienced on Revit to have a build-off of residential. I doubt he can do most of what we do in 1/5th the time. But I sure do love the way German's organize their user interface. I'll let you, know what comes of it. I'm inputting and developing 3 residential asbuilts today--all two story over 2k sf. But I've been doing this for 13yrs. I feel your pain.
  9. Hi, Anyone else find Version 8 more temperamental than prior versions when it comes to backing up and saving files? We create a lot of different files and share them, but always use layout backup from one computer to another. No matter how careful we are, we loose textures along the way. I called Chief, they deny it's any different V7, but I've never had this issue with V.7. Just wondering if anyone else experiences a higher rate of loosing connection with textures. Thanks for considering, Barry
  10. Hi, Every part of the library organization, from online to in-program is a disaster. Please read my suggestion post. It all needs a serious overhaul, it's the biggest waste of time in the program. 77 thousand items, no true boolean search. What's new on line? What do you have? What are you missing? No problem...just sit for an hour and cross check. Ugh. Many aspects of Chief are brilliant, library organization is not one of them. Cheers! Barry
  11. Hi Perry, I just spent the afternoon screwing around with this. It's not possible to get good results. Chief exports all the walls, doors and windows but with different labels so you don't know what you're looking at in Rescheck. If the labels were consistent with the wall labels on the plan, perhaps I could figure out what's what and manually edit in rescheck. It would be easier to start from scratch in Rescheck which doesn't save time. I find it useless, but if anyone out there has figured it out, please let me know. Thanks, Barry
  12. Hi, I have a 1.5 story house with attic rooms. I would like to fill those attic rooms with R-48, and have R-38 in the vaulted center room. We don't have the ability to input roof R-Values, so I'm assuming I have to use a ceiling or floor. Does anyone know the most accurate method of using Rescheck in this situation? Thanks very much, Barry Seattle now accepts rescheck for energy code--it would brilliant if I could get accurate output for all remodel configurations
  13. Hi, Thanks for your help, I restarted the computer and it all went back to normal...pulling my hair out with that one for a while....gremlins.
  14. Hey all, When I auto build a foundation it create higher stem walls where there are decks. These can't be lowered manually--they fight editing. if I frame 1st Fl. it places the framing right through the stem wall. ' Why is it creating this tall stem wall at decks to begin with and how do I control them. From the 1st floor all the rooms, ceiling and stem wall heights are the same. Thanks for considerin, Barry Please see attached images. X8
  15. Hi, I'm trying to use Appliance and Fixture Schedules and labels in Chief. I find that I can't tab to many fixtures, it just skips over them, so don't have control over their size and name I'm told the only way to make this work is to create your own library of those items, name and size them before placing them. Anyone else have a better way? 77 thousand items in the library and I have to name and re-size all the ones I might use to get a decent schedule out of them? Thanks for considering, Barry
  16. Hi, I've used all of those gpu's, now I have an nvidia 980 GTX ti... no more waiting when undoing. If you're new to chief, you probably won't need the power, but it does make a difference as models grow in complexity. GPU and CPU will max out if you're raytracing and rendering complex models at the same time. You can build a monster pc for under $1800. I'm sure a mac would be quite a bit more. Also gamers are always upgrading, search craigslist 980 gtx, you can often find a pretty robust machine for 1/2 the price. The i5 cpu will be slow to raytrace, but it depends on what you're used to. I've never seen system memory max beyond 8megs, 16 is more than sufficient. Cheers!
  17. Hello, I do the asbuilt & design and start the layout: plans, elevations cross sections, we usually have several sheets of very well developed engineering with details. You finish the plans to Seattle building department spec. (Seattle DPD, residential remodel) This will require full time assistance, off-site. We're a 35yr old design build firm with continuous work. The more I'm freed up to do asbuilts and design the more back-end finishing for submittal we'll need--I have quite a bit of work ready to go. Please email or call 206-595-eighteen hundred. barry at chermak.com Thank you, Experience necessary: Must be very experienced with Chief or autocad. Must be very experienced with residential renovation and the submittal process, must be detail oriented.
  18. Hi, Watch Wendy's annotation set videos, as well as Scott Halls. They will both help immensely, but pay attention to Wendy's explanation of what doesn't make sense about the pre-configured Annotation sets. I think I stayed away from them for a year because the pre-configured annos didn't seem to work correctly. It would behoove Chief to have someone make a core set of annotations that were correctly configured. At this time the core set is a inconsistant example of how they are supposed to help. Cheers. Barry
  19. Hi, My plan was started in X7, and I'm not sure if we were ever able to uncheck a layer when in layer sprayer, but I recall being able to choose a layer while in layer sprayer and uncheck it so that the things I spray would disappear. I can't uncheck a layer while in layer sprayer.... Either I'm imagining that I once could, or it's an x8 glitch or it's because I migrated this plan from x7 to x8? Anyone else find this to be true? Thank you, Barry
  20. Hi, I'm having a friend who recently purchased X8 finish this layout started in X7. He never owned X7 and I guess they sell you X8 if you're a recent buyer. I would upgrade to X8 and we would continue this ball of wax in X8. I'm just wondering if anyone has migrated a large plan/layout from X7 to X8? Have you found any issues? Thank you, Barry
