  1. Never mind, using wrong tool!!
  2. As the title says, I cannot use the wall break tool in any mode to break a roof in order to pull a section either in or out? X8 if it makes any diff
  3. Having used chief since version 2? I remember discussions about setting up a rendering, and letting the computer run all nite or for days to achieve a result. Therefore, I just never bothered using it with any version. I upgraded from 10.8 to X7/X8. Today's computers have a lot more going for them than what we had to put up with. My expectations are not complex, I would simply like to get results in a reasonable period of time so that I'll use the rendering action more often to produce something that provides help in the sales aspect. I will not use X7 every day, so I hope to set it up for results, but not necessarily what I perceive as extreme end results. Rather decent results if that makes sense within a reasonable timeframe. If this new video card provides better elevations and overviews, faster smoother rotating, etc, then I'll be happy!
  4. OK, I recently upgraded to X7, and X8 soon. After reviewing equipment I decided to do a bit of upgrading. The I5 currently has 8gb ram and a Nvidia 550Ti card. I have 8gb of additional ram, for 16, and after reading about video cards I went with an EVGA GeForce GTX960 card with 4gb of Gddr5 ram. I'm thinking I should just use one of Chief's plans already in the program to time a rendering, perhaps time a raytrace, then switch out the new goodies, and run the same tests using the same supplied saved plan. So far I have not changed any settings for either raytrace or rendering, however, I do expect the new video card to perform substantially better than the 550 for rendering. I find it hard to justify a GeForce 970 or 980 card, when the 960 gets such good reviews as a performer. Any suggestions before running these tests are welcome, and may help someone decide to go that extra step up in video card performance.
  5. So the OS and chief and product files should ALL be on the ssd? I have used multiple drives and partitions before but a 120 now seems a tad small? Of course one can move all the other stuff to D or E.....
  6. If Chief is working fine on regular sata 6 harddrive, would it make any noticeable perfomance difference if I added a SSD drive, a 120gb, and only installed Chief on it? In other words add a SSD slave, call it D or E or...but just for Chief? I have an opportunity to pick up a slightly used Intel 120gb SSD for a very reasonable price.
  7. In another thread there was a link to video card results, but I cannot locate it again? Can someone kindly direct me? Thanks
  8. I agree this constant version upgrade is annoying, but why is it one can't make V10 work on a win10 machine and another can? All along I accepted the fact that 10 wouldn't run right on Win7 so I have kept V10 with the dongle running on one of my laptops or a dedicated winXP desktop. Although I have a decent win7 setup, I was led to believe that now we needed to at least get up to V2(12?) on a Win7 machine? Then one could use the dual monitors, something I always desired? So, I recently did the V7 upgrade so i can get Chief up and running on my Win7 machine, and I accept that there are more bells and whistles, but I really do expect a performance improvement......but how is it that one can make V10 run on a win7 or win10 machine?? Although my old Sager laptop is a 13# boat anchor, I kept it running XP just so I could handle Chief 10 in a portable setting. I'm thinking I should keep it this way, do limited field work in 10, then essentially redo it in V7? I have not explored the 10 plan moved to V7 capabilities yet?
  9. I'm trying to get ahead of what may be a potential bottleneck in my desktop. Just upgraded to V7 from 10, not even installed yet. Running an I5/2320 w/8gb ram and a Nvidia GTX 5500ti card. I looked at another thread which listed video cards, and my 5500ti only does around 1600 cycles? whatever, compared to a few recs such as a gtx770 which does something like 6950. What exactly does this mean in the real world? I can buy a GTX770 used for about $180, but would memory be a better kick? Don't expect to do much rendering, although I'm sure I will do more now that I'm with a newer version? I do use dual monitors! Suggestions please, and I am capable of switching out computer parts and building desktops.
