I guess there is some terminology differences - as in if I produce a 2d plan with varying degrees of heights I would call-out a "plate height" and a "finish ceiling height" on the floor plan and section, but on the roof plan I would indicate ceiling joists framed down (soffit label can be used), but I actually wouldn't call it out as a soffit as I use for varying heights of finish ceilings adjacent to each other. I would take the "rough" ceiling as being the plate height - but perhaps I am wrong. So what is "rough ceiling" in CA?
-
If you can't change the finish ceiling height or the floor level above without changing everything else - what is the point of even allowing this input?
-
Finish Ceiling and Rough Ceiling hgts should not be connected - that makes little sense really. You should be able to set both independent of each-other. I swear I thought i've seen a Scott video on this issue, and making ceiling joists inside the wall framing.

I'm honestly petitioning for more non-automated ways/tools to get things done like you are saying. The app can't possibility have a Dbx solution for every field condition. CA is amazing at so many things other apps dont support well for residential, but then when it comes to the details I feel its lacking. Dont get me wrong, there are people like Joe and Scott (and others) who can get these Dbx's to work well for them.

Just from a design standpoint, Steeple's typically are the same dimension each side so the roof-lines meet all in the same point. You may have some other plan, but I wanted to at least mention this in case you've not deigned one before. You dont need it to be the shape of your vestibule, as you can simply over-frame the perimeter into the roof area behind...in fact it would look better this way.

Just tried and yeah, its not there.

Thanks Joe! that worked.

Thanks for the info - so I can't just freely control what object "cuts" and what object stays in the operation? I ended up just drawing the piece I needed in the section/elevation view.
-
I am trying to clip the edge of a rafter look-out detail using primitive solids. When I use the "solid intersection" I can't seem to control which section cuts which. Is there a way to control this? Here is a pic to illustrate. I set the cut piece to glass.

I realize some can make the Dbx system work, but I would much prefer if CA allowed us to specifically "set" connections and in some cases turn off all automation.
-
Any possibility to just listen in?

I appreciate your time in creating these videos Larry. It helps to know others have similar issues like this trying to us Dbx's for automated results. I also got a nice tidbit of info on the "similar properties" match Dbx, but I agree with you overall - some of this is "spooky action at a distance". "In physics, action at a distance is the concept that an object can be moved, changed, or otherwise affected without being physically touched (as in mechanical contact) by another object. That is, it is the nonlocal interaction of objects that are separated in space."
-
I really think this is a good example of what I am talking about. I run into this sort of thing all the time - and if Larry has a hard time with it, I know I won't get it. What makes you want to get an automated result from the Dbx - why not just model the foundation/slab using poly-solids etc?
-
One problem I am having is that poly lines (from a 3d shape) and windows etc aren't snapping to each other - so im getting edges that are apart when zoomed in. In Vectorworks we can set tolerances, and I see in CA there is something similar, but it appears that only works with some types of objects.
-
Yes, but I have snaps on globally...it seems like some items don't have this interactive ability to use snaps..?
-
So object snaps and references are turned on if I am working with a specific tool, but why aren't object snaps on when simply using the select objects tool? Is there a setting for this? Also on primitive shapes I can't get center line snaps to work - can I turn that on as well? I've looked in the default settings under snaps but see nothing dealing with this. Thanks! added - same goes for point-to-point tool...can I turn on object snaps when i have this tool being used?

This is actually very easy to do and I think there is a video in the library on this subject. If you set the baseline of the roof plane at the elevation you need the lower wall on the rear side of the home should auto-generate to that point.
-
Yeah these work-arounds are getting to me. Here is what it looks like when i have my floor plan correct.
-
See at the transition of the block/concrete wall and the window wall (floor plan) - to get that to look correctly in elevation I have to leave it that way, but then floor plan isnt correct. There should be no cap between the concrete wall and the wood "post" (finished) - and in elevation/rendering it shows correct, but floor plan incorrect. The last layer of the block wall is wrapping around at the distance (as if) the wall turned 90 deg. Actually, as I talk this thru the easiest solution may be to create a new wall that doesn't have all those layers so the finish later doesn't wrap back. I will try that.

ok - was able to upload file.

I've seen other issues kinda like this in the past, but I dont remember seeing it on a transition like i have here. I am merging a concrete/block wall (multiple layers) with a window wall I created to basically only set my windows in. At the transition I can't get my floor plan view to look like my elevation/render view. The thin finish concrete layer is to get me by visually for now and I may detail this out differently. My issue is that my floor plan doesn't match elevations - and vice-versa if I change the other. second_version_cro1_c.zip

Thanks Bill - through some trial and error I was able to control the roof the way I needed....in fact, upon seeing how it looked I decided against that approach. It was actually a skillion roof where all points of the roof had a different Z coordinate. It was the fact I made a complex design on the roof, and I couldn't identify the lines that were considered "baseline" - but through trial and error I figured it out.
-
I'm trying to model a modern skillion roof, and when I place my perimeter around the section of the home I want the roof over - how do I control what edges represent what (baseline/ridge)?
-
Is there a way I can edit a roof shapes edges etc post creation?...more specifically set what edges of the roof plane should be used as a baseline starting point etc?

How do I create trim for windows with built up molding for top/bottom
johnny replied to mctabish's topic in General Q & A
Personally, I would make a section cut detail of the window/trim sections and then reference to that section. Here is an example of a little detail I place in plans (although these are "base" versions, I typically detail out more specific information based upon plan). I've even had complex build-ups detailed in a larger scale adjacent to these.
