  1. Yep - it tries to connect all my walls inside so that layer becomes glass and you see to the ply.
  2. So I found out (kinda) what the issue is. Since I made the wall glass and connected it to a wall with Sheetrock, when the application automatically balloons the walls the material bends. Interesting... I dont know how to get around this... This is what I get for thinking I could do something in CA that needs a ton of work-arounds. The application is trying to think for me - and it takes me more time screwing around with tricking it to do what i want than if I were to model this in Sketchup using shapes.
  3. Thanks - I'll check that out.
  4. Thanks! I did a search on Joe Carrick and Curtain Wall and only this thread came up. Do you have advice on key words from that thread?
  5. Here is the plan... second_version_cro1.zip
  6. So I am working on this - and I did a bit different route making my walls glass and adding the columns/girts/beams over top. However, I ran into an issue where my glass wall displays fine from the exterior, but when i move inside it show Sheetrock. Why is that?...and how can I fix? Thanks
  7. I'm working on a modern house design for a client - using CA. Im trying to model out a "wall" that consists mostly of columns (steel), girts, headers, and windows wrapped in a wood clad. In Vectorworks i can simply place "window wall" between the columns/girts/headers without a "wall container". Below is an example of the type of window/wall I am trying to model. In CA I need a wall to inset a window, so I was thinking about using a 2x4 (rough framing only) between the columns and then set my windows in those. Following that I would use the wall material region to manually place my cladding (interior and exterior). Does this sound like the best method to use? Thanks!
  8. I've tried to use CA this way, and even though it is soooo very close, CA can't handle ADA transitions for driveway aprons and/or sidewalk ramps. This is unless someone has found a work-around.
  9. Thanks guys - that got me 1/2 there - lol .....its still not letting me bring that window closer to the edge. I am now 3 5/8" away. I even have my min. separation set to 0. I am having to do this since I have a modern design with a "window wall" - but I need to place the windows in something even though the windows will align frame-to-frame.
  10. I think you are right Graeme as I made a new file and tried the same thing and there is some sort of restriction. However, I have gone through the dbx for windows and can't see anything that pertains to this. Im going to end up running into this issue a lot on this project since I have windows that come to edges throughout. Its things like this that end up stopping my workflow a lot in CA. Thanks for any help.
  11. I am having an issue with a window that refuses to move in a wall segment - and I have no idea why. I've looked thru the properties and can't find anything to suggest a restriction on its movement. Here is a pic of what I see - I am trying to move it "down" while remaining on the wall type shown in black.
  12. I realize when you move an object that "bumps" up against another objects you can press ctr key to freely move regardless of the previous bump restriction. However, is there another key you can hold to keep that object along a x/y axis? Meaning, I want the freedom to move an object through another object, but id like to keep the object I am moving fixed to X or Z. The Ctr key frees the object completely.
  13. Interesting... i would have pushed for just rebuilding the existing wall, or furring the inside instead - but hey, good luck with it.
  14. I just have to ask - is that detail suggesting that the newly framed (furred) wall to contain the pocket actual abruptly ends to the right? When I looked at that detail I couldn't understand why someone would do that. how would that edge be finished?
  15. I have a home I'm working on - modern design - and I'm wanting to use CA. Is there a reason why I couldn't make a wall that was glass and then manually place the frame pieces in where i want/need support etc? I see this as a superior way than trying to mess with windows.
  16. I think the reason they are suggesting this is so the schedule doesn't update automatically (breaking the link). Also, I think they are saying you need to hand input this data...there isn't an automatic feature in getting this done. Im curious why the GC wants it like this....
  17. I swear i've seen a video by someone in making a dome ceiling in CA. I just dont remember by who - maybe even in CA library. FYI - in projects i've had domed ceilings, i've found it more practical to spec out a pre-manufactured system (you can custom size). http://www.archwaysandceilings.com/dome-ceiling/
  18. For $33 its probably worth it to try one and see if it helps you. Although I will say i somewhat agree that SSA should include more services/etc. Right now I can't imagine what someone that already knows CA in-and-out would find useful about SSA.
  19. There is a new "CAD Mouse" coming from 3DConnexion - i'm going to try it cause I do like their other products, but I thought I would share. http://www.3dconnexion.com/
  20. What else would you have other than a jamb with casing? What you have shown is a site built bay window - which would involve installing 3 windows in framed openings. As Alaska mentioned, there are such things as pre-built bay and box windows that are, in themselves, a "window" of sorts. Is that what you want? Such as this from Pella: http://www.pella.com/windows/explore-window-styles/bay-bow.aspx
  21. How about: 1. Make primitive boxes for batts 2. Make trim version primitive to match eave angle 3. Rotate trim primitive to angle desired (eave) 4. copy 5. Trim batts while pasting (hold position) to bring back the trim primitive I just tried it and works fast.
  22. Looking back at your post #42, that looks pretty good - but yes, Vectorworks does all this very well. What doesn't make sense to me is that Chief seems to have the ability to do all this fine, but it just doesnt.
  23. Is that supposed to represent grass or vegetation? I'm all for better drawing tools for CA, but in this case Id say you'd be way better just grabbing some vector art of simple grass that you can import as line work. https://www.google.com/search?q=vector+grass+drawing&source=lnms&tbm=isch&sa=X&ei=TVdmVa77I9j7oQSp9YLYCw&ved=0CAcQ_AUoAQ&biw=1995&bih=1369#imgrc=_ I used this type of vector in a recent drawing I did for a detail of grass -
  24. One of the elements of that "look" is typically the windows/doors align to the reveal lines - just FYI.
  25. OK - got it, thanks. I think having that on was messing me up.
