I am working on a project with a slab on grade. I have added the structural engineers mark-ups on the framing plan. I am now working on the foundation plan and want to reference the framing plan over the foundation plan so I can locate HD's, Footing pads, etc. When I select the reference floor display I get the floor plan walls, not the framing plan. How do I reference the entire framing plans, notes, post, beams, etc. Thanks, Mike

I created a section from the back clipped cross section command. Then I made a CAD detail from view. I can select all of the lines in the CAD detail except the foundation. I'm not sure why. Thanks, Mike

I have a client that has made a small change on the plans that have already been competed. The change will require an interior footing to move 10". I want to move the footing in the section view. I made the section a CAD detail from view since CA did not show all of the top plates and did not show the blocking between the rafters correctly. Now I want to move the footing 10". When I pick the line of the footing nothing happens, I can pick all other lines such as wall lines, rafters, blocking, etc., but I can not pick the footings. I thought when I made a section into a CAD detail I would be able to manipulate all of the lines of the detail. Does anyone know why I can not click on the footing lines in the details and is there a way I can move the footing. I do not want to generate a new section since this section has all of the notes and detail callouts. If I was doing this in AutoCAD it would take me about 10 seconds to move the footing. Thanks, Mike

I am using X-9. How do I add text in the comment column in the window schedule ? The window schedule added the gable end attic vents in the schedule. Why is an attic vent be added to the window schedule ? Thanks, Mike

My object snaps stop working. I have objects snap, end points, intersections, midpoint and on object checked. When I run the cross hairs over the end or center of a line or wall nothing happens. It was working earlier. I tock off for about an hour and now snaps isn't working. I s there another setting some where that could have been turned off ? Thanks, Mike

Thanks Michael. I just discovered another way to do this. I'm not sure if it works in all cases but it worked for the detail I needed to stretch. 1. Draw a marque around the part of the detail you want to stretch. Make sure you first select intersecting objects in the marque selection menu. 2. Either select the edit handle and move the cursor in the desired direction of your stretch, hit the tab key and enter the distance of the stretch, or click on transform/replicate then move and type in the distance of the stretch in the appropriate X,Y,Z field. I went through the manual and was not able to find a description on how to stretch detail lines. I see a lot on stretching cabinets, backdrops, etc. Thanks, Mike

I have a typical detail that I need to stretch the length. I do not see how to do this in CA. I know how to do this with the floor plans but do not know how to do this with a details. In AutoCAD this is a common command. In AutoCAD I type in "ST" for stretch, then draw a marque around the part of the detail I want to stretch and move the mouse in the direction I want it to stretch. Then type the distance, and done. Does anyone know how to do this in CA ? Thanks, Mike

Thanks Glenn. Sorry about taking so long to reply. My email was screwed up until this morning. Spectrum had some problem and I could not send or receive emails until this morning. I do not know how you framed the roof and ceiling joists. It was suggested that I show all rooms at the lowest room height first. Then add the ceiling and roof planes at that lower height. Then move the roof planes up to the height I want the exterior walls to be at. Then go into each of the other rooms and change their room heights to the desired heights. Then frame the walls, roof and ceilings. This worked. The exterior walls were framed at 12' high. Living room ceiling framing framed at 10' high and the bedroom ceiling framed at 8' high. Is that how you did your framing ? Thanks, Mike

I am trying to add dimensions to a garage foundation. This garage has 3 garage doors and one man door. I am trying to dimension to the cuts in the conc. curb for these doors. CA will not recognize the edge of these conc. curb edges no mater what dimension command I use. How do I get CA to dimension to the edges of the conc. curb cuts ? Thanks, Mike

Mike, Don't worry. I know you were being helpful. I'm not a newbie to designing structures. I have been in business since 1983. Since 1993 I have been using AutoCAD. I have been slowly switching over to CA. CA does things different than AutoCAD. That's been a big re-learning curve. I'm getting there little by little. I still use AutoCAD on most of my projects. I can see that CA will be faster once I become more experienced using CA. It wasn't for you guys in Chief Talk helping others out I would have given up on CA a long time ago. Thanks, Mike

I will need to add a ridge beam since the client wants as much attic space as possible. The city the project is in limits the size of the accessory living quarters to 600 s.f. and a height limit of 15'-0". He plans on living in this and renting out the main house. Thanks, Mike

Thanks Robert, That worked. Thanks, Mike

I just tried that. It still frames the ceiling joists at the 12' plate height.

Thanks Robert. I'm confused. When you changed the ceiling heights to 8' and 10' then removed the air gap under ceiling structure everything framed correctly. But the 12' high exterior wall heights were not changed, which is what I want. My question is where is the program getting the 12' high exterior walls heights from ? How would you setup a project were the exterior walls were 12' high and the ceiling height in half of the building were 8' high and the other half was 10' high ? Thanks, Mike

I'm on X-9. Sorry about the quality of the screen shoot I sent. I have attached the plan file this time. Chopsaw, you are correct. The client wants 12' high exterior walls and ceilings over the bedroom, bathroom, laundry and hall to be 8' ceiling. He wants the living room and kitchen ceilings to be 10' high. He is trying to get attic storage. The City of Thousand Oaks has a height restriction of 15' for accessory buildings. I did manually make the ceiling planes at 8' and 10' high before framing. After framing the ceiling planes disappeared and the ceiling joist were placed at the exterior wall heights. I also want the interior walls to frame up to the ceiling heights of 8' and 10'. How do I get the ceiling joists to frame at a different height than the exterior wall height ? Thanks, Mike Accessory Living Quarters-3.plan

The client wants 12'-0" plate heights for the exterior walls. He want attic storage so he want the ceiling height over the bedroom, bathroom, closet and hall to be 8'-0" high. Over the living room and kitchen he want the ceiling to be 10'-0". The interior wall should stop at the ceiling planes but they continue up to 12'-0", the same as the outside walls. Also when I frame the ceiling the joists are placed at 12'-0" high. How do I get the ceiling joist to frame at the ceiling plane heights, 10'-0" and 8'-0" ? And how do I get the interior walls to stop at the ceiling planes ? Section.bmp

exterior stairs not showing on floor plan
capitaldesigns replied to capitaldesigns's topic in General Q & A
I would have thought that there was an ability to have the exterior stairs show up on both floors since that is the way they are shown on the architectural plans. If I use a reference set to show the stairs that only show up on one floor, the entire floor plan will be displayed, not just the stairs. Thanks, Mike -

I have been following one of Chieftutors videos where he is adding a wrap around deck with stairs to the ground. The plan is one story with basement on a sloped lot. In the video he was on floor 0 when he added the stairs from the ground up to the first floor deck. The stairs show up only on floor 0 and not on floor 1. The stairs are on the stairs & ramp layer. On both floor 0 and floor 1 that layer is turned on, but the stairs is not displayed on floor 1. How do I get the stairs to display on both floor 0 and 1 ? Thanks, Mike

Windows showing up in schedule that are not on plans
capitaldesigns replied to capitaldesigns's topic in General Q & A
Thank you for the help. How get rid of the callout in the window schedule ? I tried in the floor plan and the double arch top window do not show on the floor plans. I then went to the elevation views. They do show up in the elevation view when I explode the mulled units. I then can see the window schedule label and able to uncheck "include in schedule". Another problem is that when I re-mull the windows again the windows do not mull together correctly. The exterior trim around each window does not merge together and show as one trim around all 3 windows as they originally did. How do I get the trims around each window to merge together and show as one trim around all 3 windows ? Also, why does the window schedule callout of the mulled units not show up on the floor plans ? In this case I do not want them to show up in the window schedule since they are existing. On a project where these are new windows I will want the window schedule callouts to show up on the floor plans. Thanks, Mike -
I am using X-9. I am working on a small addition project. When I make the window schedule I am getting a window 1 that does not exist. It shows it as 32"x24 1/2". I do not have any such window in the plans. I have selected not to show existing window in the schedule. Even with that none of the existing windows are this size. In the addition I have 4 windows, all the same size. The schedule is calling these window 2. Window 1 callout does not show up on the floor plans so I have no idea where window 1 is coming from. I have attached the plan. Can someone take a look and see where this window is coming from. I need to get rid of this callout in the window schedule. I have been working on an addition and remodel project that had to go through both an HOA approval process and city planning hearing. The room addition was the part of the project that was required to go through the above mentioned. The remodel part of the project is all interior work. After submitting the room addition plans to the HOA and city planning the client was anxious to move forward on the interior design. I saved a copy of the plans into another folder an started work on the kitchen remodel. We went through a few designs. Each time I saved to a new folder incase the client wanted to go back to a previous design. After that I worked on the master bathroom. We went through two revisions. Each time saving to a new folder. During this same time I am going back and forth with the HOA and planning department. These changes are being made on the original plans, the ones without the interior remodel. I now have the approvals from the HOA and planning. The client want kitchen design #1 and master bathroom design #2. The question I have is how do I combine these drawing into one plan ? I have the plans that were approved from the HOA and city planning that are showing the addition only. I have the kitchen remodel showing on another set of plans that does not show the master bathroom remodel. I have the master bathroom plans on the a set of plans which shows the second kitchen remodel, But client wants to go with the first kitchen remodel. Is there an easy way to combine these plans together ? The HOA and planning department information is on the site plan. The kitchen remodel in on the first floor and the master bathroom remodel are on the second floor. It would be great if I could combine each one of those plan into one final plan. Is that possible ? Thank, Mike
