  1. This thread might turn into the most informative thread in the history of threads! Consensus seems to be that there will be a lag of some sort to deal with regardless of the system speed. We can only hope to mitigate it to a more acceptable level. As for me getting a new system, I think I might subscribe to the Tom Cruise Risky Business philosophy: "Sometimes ya just gotta say....." and get that new blazing fast system!
  2. No, I haven't. I wanted to address every potential issue that might be causing it, including the 5+ year old system and model size, so I could get my head around what I *should* expect in performance and either fix the problem or adjust my expectations.
  3. I've worked in Chief consistently for about a year and I've always seen quite a bit of lag with x7 and now x8. Of course the lag gets worse, and almost unbearable, the bigger the model and mainly with undo's. As someone who has used ACAD for 25 years, I've become accustomed to "snappiness" with both commands and display responsiveness. (And I'm not saying this to unfairly compare Chief to ACAD and complain about what Chief can't do or should do compared to ACAD.) Basically I can plow thru working drawings on my old ACAD system and the lag and lack of responsiveness in Chief is killing productivity. Yes, I've done all the recommended things in other threads to improve performance - run chief and work on an SSD, keep windows temp folder clear, etc. From what I've seen from the posts on this thread everyone sees bog downs and lack of responsiveness, mainly when the models are big. My question is, what constitutes a big model? The largest one I've worked on is about 40-45mb, and the lag is terrible. What size is considered "huge"? Also, considering the system in my sig (late 2010 tech), can I eliminate the lag with a new system? Thinking about i7-6700k/z170 mobo/gtx970/m.2 SSD/32gb RAM. I do acknowledge the "fastest cpu & gpu that's affordable" strategy, but if I can drop in a better graphics card rather than dropping $2k for a complete new system... Thanks!
  4. Maybe Chief can incorporate in the dbx an image box showing exactly where the stretch planes are on a symbol as you set them. Even better would be slider bars for all three dimensions that would show on the symbol image as you adjust the slider bars.
  5. Following this to see if there are any new solutions. I posted a thread with the exact same issue months ago but never got a solution. Changing the default in anno sets doesn't work.
  6. Thanks for the replies. I'm not at my computer but I'll check the card later. I'm not trying to do a RT, just a simple view with lights turned on. Thinking about it, I know that there are eight lights in that scene. What's the purpose of only allowing eight lights? Doesn't make sense to me.
  7. Oh, and I should add that the can lights in the ceiling do not work either.
  8. I placed four puck lights under a wall cabinet and they work fine. Then, I copied those four lights to another wall cabinet. The newly copied puck lights do not work. I also tried inserting the same puck lights under the other wall cabinet but still nothing. I've seen this happen before with some lights working but other, exact same, lights not working (whether copied from a working light or inserted from the library), and just ignored it because showing the lighting to a client wasn't required. I've even seen it happening with multiple-light hanging ceiling fixtures - two or three lights work, but there's one that just doesn't - like that one bulb has burned out. Any ideas? See the attached plan. E-R.plan
  9. No, I set it in both anno sets and from the "Default Settings" wrench button and it still won't stay set.
  10. The line spacing for rich text is way too wide for how I want it to look in my drawings and I've tried to set my default line spacing for rich text to "user, 75%", but CA never keeps the setting. If I have multi-line rich text I always have to change it after the fact or remember to set it before I start typing. Any ideas? Programming glich?
  11. Hi Meg! I just saw this thread and tried to find the Facebook page but couldn't. I'm in Allen and I'm also new to CA, having only done a few small remodel jobs and I'm just about to wrap up a large-ish custom house. It's taken me at least three times as long as it would on Autocad, but I've learned lots. Even though that means taking a monumental beating on it money-wise.
  12. Now that we're talking about rich text, anno sets, and defaults, I've tried to set my default line spacing for rich text to "user 75%" but it never works. If I have multi-line rich text I always have to change it after the fact or remember to set it before I start typing. Any ideas why the default line spacing won't stick?? The persistent 100% spacing is wayyyy too much IMHO.
  13. Thanks Mike! Brut force had come to mind, but not the kind you're talking about. I'll try this at the office tomorrow.
  14. The plan attached is an existing house that's been added onto several times, hence the double gable roof with the cricket in the flat valley. I'm having a problem with the 8:12 under-framed cathedral ceiling not cutting the gable wall for the 9:12 roof plane above the ceiling. When I uncheck "Roof Cuts Wall at Bottom" in the "Roof" tab of the Wall Spec DBX of this gable wall, CA cuts out the exterior frame wall over the cathedral clg. In both checked and unchecked conditions, CA still draws the gable wall below the ceiling in the living room. See attached pics and plan. Any help will be greatly appreciated! Thanks! 15. Have you seen this? http://www.chiefarchitect.com/support/article/KB-01846/42/Chief-Architect/Dimensions/Configuring-a-Leica-DISTO-Device-to-Work-with-Chief-Architect-Software.html
  16. I'll be doing a sun study consultation with a client for the first time and I've run into a little problem. The shadow hatching/line will not show under a porch. I've made the outside wall of the porch to be invisible but it still won't show on the plan. It shows on the 3d camera view just fine. I've attached the plan file. Any ideas? Thanks
  17. I think I have it figured out. The back clip plane determines what objects I can snap to. The dimensions work okay but if I need to draw a line from a snap point, I have to zoom in and approximate it. No big deal.
  18. yep. I've tried all on, each one individually on and the others off. nothin'. It's one of those situations where I'm thinking, "I could have sworn this has worked before! Why not now?"
  19. I have the same issue, and it's not just dimensions. Is there something I'm missing? I have the correct defaults selected.
