Yes the File must be given a Name , ie always 1st thing on opening a New Plan for a Project give it the Clients name ( Or whatever) then Chief will start making Autosaves and Archive etc.......NEVER work in a Plan that says UNTITLED.............. I also learn that the hard way :)

The reminder for Archives will popup around 16-18 files as the Chief default is 14,  however I have mine set at 22 to see less of that annoying popup :)

Diane......Updates , don't usually reset Preferences , so the settings that were there should not have changed  unless you mean you went from X11-X12 ?

Chief does acknowledge unexpected closures with no save option given  , I've seen it myself and with Clients on both PC and MAC.

It was changed somehow on mine.  I did the update around 10:00 yesterday morning and before that I had several .plans archive folders. I had 4 on the 10th which were all done before I did the update.   Today I have changed the preference back to archive every hour.  I had one at 10:17 but now that one is gone and I have one at 11:26 am.  I'm not sure what happened or is happening. Diane, not exactly sure but a manual 'save' might be part of the archiving strategy. I called tech support regarding this issue, and it's been a while, but I think I remember that being important as I had a bad/older plan file with no archives even though I thought I set up prefs to create them automatically. Made no sense at the time as the implication from the pref's etc. is that archive will be created 'automatically' but not so sure. Can anyone confirm?

I have always had several archives that were available to choose from before the update.  Not sure if it was one every hour, though.  I think they have a maximum you can set and then maybe they get over written when it gets to that point???

With OneDrive open in your browser select recent files, find your plan file in the list, click on it and in the menu bar at the top select version history. It should then show a list of previous versions.

Thanks for the info.  I looked that way as well and it was the older version since I had the file open working on it.  Oh well, I have started redoing my work.  Thanks for reminding me to set the archive preferences so I won't have this happen again.  I think they should add that to the list they give us to make sure certain things are done before we install the update. /They tell us to make sure we have backed up our work.  They could also tell us to be sure to reset our archive preference when we get done.

There is only one auto save file, the main one you are working on. if you are using a cloud system such as OneDrive you might be able to get it back from the cloud.

I do, but I don't know if it updates files that are open.  I will check One Drive to see.  UPDATE:  I looked, last one uploaded was 23 hrs ago which is the one I have now.  Won't upload open files, evidently.

I assume it will. The only thing to consider is the total number of files you are going to have, as each archive save is a separate independent plan file you will really start to eat into your drive space if you are auto saving every 5 minutes.

Gotcha.  Is there a way to find the autosave files?  Are they stored on the computer in another location?

Auto save and archiving are two separate functions. They are set in the preferences. I believe the default for archiving is once a day, you can set it to hourly. If your system crashes then the auto save may not help as the crash may have resulted in the saved plan being corrupted. As such, the archives are your only way to get your plan back.

I wonder if i set this for the last save, would it use the last autosave as the archive?

  7. I was working on this plan since I installed the CA x12 update yesterday.  I had it on save every 5 minutes.  It crashed and there are no archived plans to work on since 10:35 am yesterday.  Now I have to go back and try to remember all the changes I made.  I was nearly done with it!   Grrrrrrr!  Frustrated.

Yes and no.  Those little 8" wall sections should likely just be framed conventionally.  That would mean one single 17'+ cutout.

Is there a distance I could move those windows over where it could still be ICF?  I guess what I am asking is what is the minimum space between openings where ICF can still be used?

Thanks everyone for your guidance.  I came back to look at this problem on a day where I had a clearer mind and used some of the advice given.  Here is what I came up with as a way to change the dimensions to what I needed them to be.   I used the same technique to change the ceiling heights and remove the depth of the floor system.

This one was easy to make. Stretch plains right in the center.

Richard I have a question,  Is there a way I can make the panels thicker, 1.5" x 4".  I tried to make it work on the dialog box for the railing but it didn't change anything visually when I changed the panel thickness to 4".  Thanks!

  11. I have it done,  just trying to learn a CA way to do it next time.  This builder uses them a lot and thought next time I wouldn't have to do a manual method.  Your info was so helpful. I learned  some new things about symbols I didn't know before.  Thanks a bunch!

You'll still be able to stretch it, but as was mentioned above, too wide or too narrow will mess up the proportions. Otherwise, stretch away!

I increased the width between newel posts to 244" in the above picture, but it didn't change the width of the panels just the distance between the posts.  Is there another way to stretch the panels so I can see what it looks like?  Thanks!

You can also take the library symbol, "Baluster X', place it in plan, turn up the smoothing angle, then delete the iron balusters with a single click each. Then, convert to a new mill work symbol.

Rob, I tried to figure this out but it wouldn't let me changed the smoothing angle.  Held it at 45 degrees even though it looked like it changed it before I closed the dialog box with "ok".  Also didn't see where I could turn off the balusters.  When you get time, could you give me more information.  I have a work around now, but would like to learn this way.  Thanks!

Oh wow,. So going to try this.  Thanks!

The challenge (impossibility in Chief) for that design to stretch properly is that you will usually just want it to stretch in length, but stay the same height in any given installation... and for that design to stretch only in length uniformly the pieces would have to rotate as they get longer, which stretching alone can't do.

Make a cad detail from view of the elevation with the railing set as just a top and lower rail, then in the cad detail set all your X's with 2-rectangles then copy hold position into your 3D view elevation and turn them all into P-solids.  You might find it easiest to rotate/align the pieces correctly using Tranform/Replicate, and rotate about current point, in which you've made a current point at the endpoint of a properly located piece.

You need to draw it to scale in 3D and convert it to a millwork symbol.  However that design will not stretch very far properly and look correct so you may need to draw each size you need.  Stretch the library one out to 12' or so and see what happens to it.

Thanks guys,  your guidance saved me some time.  I ended up drawing a line where I need  it between the upright posts.  Then I changed that into 1.5" x 4" molding polyline offset .75" from the line I drew so the molding would be centered.  Then I reflected it upon itself and took both copies and blocked them together and copied them to the next locations they were needed, adjusting them if necessary.  Wasn't too bad.

I tried making it into a symbol, but as you mentioned DzinEye, the pieces needed to rotate just a little and I couldn't figure out how to compensate for that quickly.

Chopsaw, when I stretched the CA symbol to 21' it just made another copy of the x

  16. Does anyone  have a railing like this they can share or tell me how to go about  making it myself.  The one I found in the symbols available in our software has 2 x's where I need only one and it has iron balisters where I don't need to have any.  Thanks!

This is what I am wanting, but need the x's to resize according to available space.

  17. Can anyone remind me where to change the height of the posts in the railing so that the top of the post is above the railing?  the railing is at 42" and the post is at 38" and is grayed out so I can't change it in this screen of the railing specifications dialog. I know it is something so easy, but I simply can't figure it out.  Thanks!!!!
