Thanks so much for the great info guys!!!!

Just reaching because I love the ideas I hear on this forum I have a client that wants a 2 story house with each level at 12'. I have a U- shaped stairway with unequal lengths with lots of space underneath. We are thinking about putting a sink, toilet and shower into this space. Question I have is how can I close in the gap between the two flights of stairs so that folks on the stairs can't see into the bathroom? Does anyone see any other reason why this couldn't be done?

Thanks! Sure takes a lot of steps to get a perpendicular dimension. I appreciate you breaking down the process.

Thanks so much for taking the time to make the video, Rene. That is a novel way to handle it. So would you say the point from the corner is to the perpendicular point on the curve?

...and Yes Chief will snap perp to a curve consistently with all the other tools and snaps. Never knew that...
are you going to do another video to show us?

The perp and parallel tool will also set dimension lines to be perp to a line. Select the dim line, click on the tool then select the other line and your dim line will be perp to the selected line.
The curved PL line will have to be faked in as close to perp. as you can. EDIT: Perp snap actually seems work OK.
Re: the video, not sure Chief will find the corner of the house as easily as it find the corner of the CAD line (EDIT: turns out it does) but you can figure out how to make that work I'm sure.
ALSO make sure Angle Snaps are turned OFF.
Thanks so much for the video!!!!!!!!!!!!! I learn best this way. Can you tell me the toolbar you have open that has the perp. parallel options. I don't seem to have it open on my computer.

The only way perp snaps works is to follow the help file instructions precisely but I think the perp and parallel tool will work better for your purposes. Have you used it? It will draw any line perp or parallel to any other line. Can you post a pic of what you are trying to accomplish?
Thanks for trying to help. Here is a picture with examples of what I need. I have to give the distances for all corners to points perpendicular on the property lines.

If I am understanding the problem correctly, turn your "On Object" snap on also.
Turned it on it still doesn't seem to work. I do get the nearest on object but how do I know that is the perpendicular point to the corner of the house. Here are my settings:
While I am asking questions... the help for snap says to enable extension snaps... is this just picking one of the three extension snaps that are available in the preferences for object snaps or is there something else that has to be enabled?

Why can't I get a perpendicular object snap icon to show?. I have tried to do a plot plan in CA and want to dimension to the point on the lot line that perpendicular to the corner of the house. I have all the object snaps off except endpoints and perpendicular. Perpendicular doesn't want to work. As a test I drew two straight lines and then a line off of one of the straight lines that would join the other straight line at a point perpendicular to the origin of the new line. Still no perpendicular icon to snap to. I can get middle, nearest etc to work. I have always used AutoCAD to do the plot plans for this reason, but would like to be able to do them in CA Thanks!!!

Mick, The Layer can control the text style but I was not aware it was capable of controlling the Displayed Line Length Format.
I know we have been asking for it but how are you doing that ?
7 minutes ago, DianeP said:Chopsaw if I undestand your question, Mick put the line on CAD,Plot PLAN layer which automatically gave it the right size text. I then went to the defaults for CAD default and changed the format to ' instead of ' and " and made sure there were just 2 decimal points.

Mick to the rescue once again!!! How can I change the number style on this. Mine is in feet and inches instead of decimal feet and the number is too small. Thanks!!

Is there a way to turn off arrows and extension lines on a dimension style? For example lot line dimensions where arrows aren't needed but I want them when measuring from the corners of the house to the lot line, so I would make a secondary version for this situation. Thanks!!!

- Thanks for the quick response. This almost shows the way I want it to look from camera view, except it has thick sills that are as deep as wall. On plan view it doesn't show the angled window sides. Is there some way to modify it so that it shows correctly on the plan view as well?
-
It was the active defaults. Thanks!

Fair warning I don't know the proper name for what I am trying to talk about, if you could enlighten me that would be great. Anyways, the house plan I am trying to help out with is to have really think concrete walls with windows that have deep sills and angled wall edges. I have attached a picture of the sketch. Is this something that can be accomplished in CA. I am using x10. Thank you!!!

I sent a floor plan view to my layout sheet but really need to have the reference layer showing for the floor above it. I know I can always resend it with the reference layer turned on with a little bit of hassle placing it with existing notes so everything lines up right. I was wondering if there is a way to turn it on on the layout sheet that would be easier. Is there a layer for it in the layer dialog? Thanks!

Done. Thanks!

I see what the problem seems to be. The doors individually have the Use Interior Casing unchecked in the dialogs. I have this checked in the default. I guess there isn't a way to make this update automatically???
-
yes I have made the changes on the default, but nothing changed on the plan, afterwards. It changes new windows or doors added, but not the existing ones.

Would the 2x4 wall have to go the whole distance to the landing? I need to have it stop about 20" from the landing so there is room to maneuver around the cabinets to get to the toilet.
