Is Buying A Different Program The Best Way To Draw Dormers?
Kbird1 replied to EconBlueprints's topic in General Q & A
Now you are just showing your "Architect's View of the World" and I can assure you it is not the same as the average Builder's ...... at least when I am/was Framing I didn't "see" the Plywood, it's like an after thought or the wrapping on that Birthday Present you just got.... and for me at least it is long ingrained, I may do Design-Build but I still see the World from a Carpenter's point of View, I guess it's the whole left brain - right brain argument or Function over Form for some of us. Is Buying A Different Program The Best Way To Draw Dormers?

Ahhhh.... thanks for clarifying Lew , I have always used the Icon or a Programmed Mouse Button , but admit my failure to check that the SAVE was actually happening , though having an Explorer Window open yesterday on another Monitor showed it did make a save each time ( time changed on File ) , though in X11 I haven't really needed that as there is a 15-30 second "pause" in Chief whenever you do a Save. But as you suggest I should likely be a bit more Proactive in my saving files. M. -

That I didn't know , but I guess it is the Builder in Me, I feel like I should be able to look down and see it just like on the job , the Floor starts at the Top of the Concrete foundation wall as far as my Builder Brain works and has done for 35+ years now.... M. -

That is how I also work these days , and I know I saved the Plan file numerous time manually with the Icon yesterday afternoon, so I can't really say what happened , but it is the 3rd time X11 has just closed and disappeared without warning , the 1st twice it was with plans form the Forum so I didn't really lose anything, but it is usually when I am or was doing something in the Library. I am not sure why CA has not developed a Method to Use Undoplan.plans as a rescue method as I have 100 files upto almost the minute before the Crash, including a a 40+ mb file and I couldn't use it. Just sorting things out now , my backups had a few different versions, so I have been importing Layersets, defaults and SPVS etc to try and make it all match up again in One plan ...and Layout...... and trying to figure out what you told Larry in the Auto Dims thread as it would seem I have the similar but opposite issue as him.... nothing changes...seems like everything is now on 1/4" Anno default in EVERY Anno somehow..... At least in these recovered Files..... M. -

No... the 20" really means nada at this point.... So if I have it right the Terrain should be at 39 1/2 " below the Subfloor ( deck 36" off terrain + 3 1/2" upto house) 1.) uncheck automatic height in the Terrain Perimeter DBX and set that 1st manually to 39 1/2" 2.) set Deck "Room" Floor to - 3 1/2" in the Room DBX 3.) pull a Section Camera through the Deck/Door and see if Mick got his Math right....

Personally I don't think so , fixing that area in the Pic above , seems to have broken the Room above now..... not sure this plan is worth sending back
-
It is a known bug and tech Support is aware, Railings won't go upto a sloping Ceiling , I ran into this issue last year in this Thread.....
-
CA builds the Terrain auto at about -20 from the subfloor height of 0" so if you set 35"...... 55" sounds about right to the Terrain, but did you want the Deck 3' above the House Floor ? Normally I set the Deck "Room" Floor to -2 or -4 " , so there is a slight step up into the house..... need more info to advise more

Hi Allan , wow ...I see why people doing Modern Design Homes need CA to lift their game.... all the different ceiling and Floor heights are a Brain Teaser and alot of walls seem confused , so the default top and bottom heights don't work etc , so the fix seems to be to pull them down /up in elevation or 3D, the Railings can be fixed by turning Railing off in the Wall DBX , the bottom of the Wall pulled down and then railing turned back on . But the further I go the more I seem to break

No Offence and no I learnt that Lesson long ago, with a plan I forgot to name (save) immediately after Opening a New Plan..... I regularly hit the Save Icon but either that isn't working properly in X11 or my Mouse Clicks are not always seen , and to my surprise setting my AutoSave to 5 minutes and also a Hourly Archive, it seems the Layout File was not effected by these settings or something else is going on.....I would not be surprised if the crash and disappearance of X11 was caused by an attempt to autosave/archive, so I ended up with nothing. It is a real pain in the A** for find over 100 UndoPlan Files from yesterday in the undo Folder but CA won't open any of them due to a "corrupt file header" Luckily my autobackup of the Data Folder did occur to an external HDD yesterday afternoon, so I didn't lose everything but the Layout is complaining about lost Layers and annotations etc and its look like I need to relink all 46 pages.... ( where is the Re-link All Button? ...still checking....) M. -
Okay I deleted all framing in the plan and rebuilt and it has mostly fixed itself.....some wall coverings missing here and there eg on the edge of the Floor and the hole in the Roof above hot-tub. The Hole (strip) in the Office Wall I haven't goto yet...
-
Part of the issue appears to be that you haven't built the Framing.... tried building just the 3rd Floor Flor framing but have joists popping everywhere... I think you maybe using CA outside the bounds of the User Agreement ? :) not sure it is handling all the "levels" well
-
did you save a camera? trying to find the issue....

Oh I see ... I got lucky.... Mother wouldn't allow me to be "the Third" in line thankfully ... may My Grandfather and Father not hold that thought against me

You linked to the Correct file Alan? it says it was uploaded by Charles Butler ? M.

Ok thx.....I was wondering why the rebuild may not have worked for the OP and thought I'd missed something.... M.

Well the thread title certainly had me laughing , so thanks , I needed someone to lighten the day , X11 just crashed and closed with no warnings or a chance to save anything here, so it looks like I have lost hours of work in Layout and Plan Touchups.... Many people find Manual Dormers are the way to go..... https://www.chiefarchitect.com/support/category/234/dormers.html M. -
Rebuilding the Foundation didn't work for you Michael? , I just tried it again on a fresh download and it seems to work for me? Ceiling below and Stem wall is fixed by the rebuild..., maybe I am missing something? (make sure to hang the floor inside the foundation walls on rebuild Tracer) M

Thanks Joe, I do appreciate you posting these Macro Tips for those of us who aren't Macro Gurus.... Because it was For Moldings in this case I wanted to round up to the Next Ft , and actually added 1 ft extra too , to make sure I allow for some Waste , 1-2ft extra per Room is nothing really , couple of length per house as I see it , but the Marco is pretty easy to change to Suit each person's needs, or just round it like you suggested, or even to .round(0) and just add your own 10% (?) waste at Final Takeoff instead. I am leaning to what Dermot said , since it appears you Full Camera works.......in Plan View what and where does the Overview Camera show pointing at? Posting the Plan may help and be quicker too .....less of the 20 questions game.... M.
