gaps above ceiling planes when using room dividers or invisible walls
HumbleChief replied to JBi-PDX's topic in General Q & A
Yup, wrecked my back and can't sit at my desk and can't walk so much either so not the best use case scenario. I sit in a recliner with my laptop and get nothing done lol. -

All righty then. I am working on a lap top and the tools show up in different places and I completely missed the "Make Tray Ceiling In Room" tool on the bottom tool bar which I NEVER use on my desk top. Simply never looked down there for the tool staring me n the face. DOH! It even shows up on right in the screen shot I posted, wow. THANK YOU ALL for your patience as I earn my HumbleChief nickname.. -

Yeah I can fake it for sure but was simply trying to duplicate Eric's work flow in his video above but I just noticed that I don't have and can't find the same icon he's using to create a tray ceiling in 3D. I have the Tray Ceiling Polyline Tool which is (now) obviously meant to draw a poly line in plan view and SHOULD be grayed out in a 3D view. I'm off to search for the 3D tray ceiling tool. -

Thanks Ryan and apologies for not being clearer in my posts above but the problem is as soon as I go to full camera 3D view the tray ceiling button is grayed out so I cannot create a tray ceiling to 'inset into ceiling.' -

Thanks Charles, appreciate your reply. No locked layers, room selected, tray ceiling icon grayed out. SO frustrating... -

I'm not sure if this is in response to my comment above but if it is I can't even get a tray ceiling to explode. I can get one in plan view but not in 3D view as Eric is showing. Can you get the tray ceiling tool to work in 3D using the attached plan above as Eric was able to do? Thanks -

I was going to file a bug report but when duplicating Eric's steps, I select the room and the tray ceiling icon is grayed out. Thought it might be my template plan so I used the res. template from Chief with the same behavior. Can't duplicate Eric's steps above as the tray ceiling icon is grayed out. What am I missing? Thanks tray ceiling 3.plan -

Doesn't that seem like a straight up bug? If it weren't for the smart guys like Eric, how would a user ever anticipate or expect that behavior and the solution? -

The gap seems to fill without that ceiling plane masquerading as a trey ceiling. Did you try using Chief's trey ceiling tools in that area? EDIT: Any kind of trey ceiling seems to keep that end wall from filling. If you draw another room with room dividers in that trey ceiling area then raise that ceiling height it seems to work. As always it's best for the smart guys to add their input. It also might necessary to redefine your walls and build framing as currently the walls look like they are a single 4" layer of a paint/material color? Here's a drop box link to the X14 plan file. Hope it helps. https://www.dropbox.com/s/w10r5ckhfvzmpyd/tray ceiling 2.plan?dl=0 -

Can we assume you got this fixed? If so how? Thanks -

...and/or make sure the 'Walls, invisible' layer is turned on in your camera view. -

What happens if you use interior walls then make them invisible instead if room dividers? Here's what I get. The crappy one is room dividers and the OK one is interior walls, then invisible. Have no idea why. -

Interesting Alan, I pointed to the same thing but I find it interesting the different wording in the dialog boxes. Is that from X14? Not important just interesting. -
Plan View Links In Plan View - Is This Better?

Thought it might save a trip to the project browser while in plan view, but again not sure it has any real workability. -
Plan View Links In Plan View - Is This Better?
HumbleChief replied to HumbleChief's topic in General Q & A
Yeah, not sure it has any real workability. -
Curious what you all think about this idea. Of course 'better' is way too subjective a question to ask but I was struggling a bit on how to actually use the new linking capabilities in Chief as my detailing is usually minimal as I use an engineer's details much more than my own. The idea is to bypass the drop down menu for plan views and set up linked plan view call-outs that live in every plan view and can quickly be accessed in the plan versus the drop down plan view menu, of course on their own layer. Haven't really tried it yet but what do you think? Sorry no sound in the vid. 861345270_palnviewplan.plan

3 point turn for what? A fire engine hammerhead? Or for a Honda Civic? How big a radius?
-
Thanks Maureen, did not know that. Is that new for X14?
-
Thanks Glenn and understood. When I create a template I usually want to include most everything as that, to me, is what makes a template a template. Seems weird to me that Chief has, by default, most everything checked to delete when I would have everything, by default, unchecked but perhaps this works better for most users?

Yeah, and I probably learned a couple of those tricks from you!!
