Should I Make The Move To Chief From Vectorworks
HumbleChief replied to gwheckendorn's topic in General Q & A
Don't know your name gwheckendorn but if you are considering the move to CA go to www.Chieftutor.com NOW. Do not pass go. Do not collect $200. Do not think this program will come easily (it doesn't seem like you're deluding yourself in this regard) and start studying videos now. The paradigm that CA uses is unlike any other ad you need to learn how CA does things and the sooner the better to avoid frustration. Next, bookmark this page because you will be here a LOT learning Chief's idiosyncrasies of which there are many. The help here on this forum is phenomenal and one of the things that makes CA such a value as a product. I think a lot of long time users (myself included started with CA 7) might forget what it took to learn this program and truly be proficient at it, Still waiting after many years but once you get the hang of it and re-learn your CAD chops using CA's tools it is truly a great tool for residential design. I never learned any 'other CAD' so I had nothing to unlearn but seeing through the eyes of the developers to understand why they approach certain aspects of the program the way they do took a long time for me to understand. You may be a very quick study, and I may be slow but it's not an easy program and will take some pretty diligent study but the rewards are worth it IMO. -
I wonder if just 'adding' Chief X6 to the program list in the NVidia 3D management dbx was enough?

I went back and tried to find the setting(s) that had the most effect and I couldn't get the shadow view to slow back down no matter which setting I changed. NOT complaining was just hoping I could find the culprit to help someone else out. Thanks again for the help everyone.
-
AWESOME! Followed all the advice and all the setting and threads and it works fantastic. I don't know which setting was the culprit as it seemed most of the setting were already set to default values. I'l try a couple of setting reverted and see what cause the major speed-up. Thanks so much for taking the time to help.

Thank KT, I'll explore when I get back to the office.
-
Thanks Perry but no help. Can you post your settings?

I was just watching a video that Scott posted, thanks as always, and was noticing the shadow view he was using and the almost instantaneous view changes on a fairly complex model. I have a good, or even great, video card (Nvidia 780) but I get really sluggish view changes with shadows on with the simplest of 4 walled models. Here's the video. ..https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=J2uBDzg9Yiw&feature=youtu.be.. (weird had to add the periods before and after in order to sow the video link) ...and here's my setting in Preferences Render, system specs in sig. Any help greatly appreciated.

Same with my engineer though he uses A,B,C etc.no shading, very simple to annotate.
-
Agree with KT too. Never seen that behavior here Alan, something is definitely set up differently and something I would change as that extra step you are experiencing can be very distracting and cause problems with Layer Sets in the future. Maybe that's what the OP is experiencing too?
-
Alan, Maybe I'm misunderstanding your question or comment but in X5 whenever you double clicked a layout box it would take you back to the Anno Set you were last working on - NOT the Anno Set you were using when you sent the plan to Layout. You'd always have to remember to change Anno Sets back to stay current. In X6 if you double click on a Layout box it takes you back to the Anno Set that was in use when you sent the plan view to Layout. Absolutely brilliant new X6 feature and so so painful to go back to X5. Not sure if/how that might help you or the OP but hope it does.
-
All the shapes have the option of filling them - just type in the text you want when opening the callout dbx.
-
I thought X6 solved that issue?? - Or at least it hasn't been a problem for me since using X6.
-
Make sure your layers are set to what you expect to see in the Anno Set. You might actually be selecting random layers that are being applied to your plan view then the anno set takes you back to the sets determined by the anno set. That's pretty confusing but the anno set layers will rule what layers you see, so again check the layers selected in the anno sets and see if those are the ones you're seeing.

Got it. The corner of the roof plane extended into the adjacent plane instead of being cut off and butted to it.
-
I have a ceiling plane that appears and is associated with a roof plane but I can't seem to get rid of it or get it to show properly. If I delete the roof plane above, it goes away but returns no matter the changes I make. It's an X5 file because a client must use X5 files. Thank you. Here's a pic ...and here's the plan CEILING PLANE 1.zip

Mike, I drew a simple CAD box and vertical and horizontal lines and everything snaps just as it should, and how it seems it used to for you. Have not seen the behavior you're describing and can only duplicate it with snaps turned off. Sorry that's not much help but do you have a plan that exhibits what you're seeing?
-
Thanks so much for all the help. Goofy plans are my trade mark so I've learned to live with it I have a client who uses and must have the files in X5 - otherwise couldn't agree more with the X6 kudos and recommendations. REALLY hard to go back to X5.
-
Thanks Jim, I changed the deck default height before and it still seemed to switch back and forth between being OK and not so OK. Could you please tell me if it looked funky when you first opened the plan? It seems like a couple of things 'fix' it but mostly just opening the plan seems to cure it.
-
As always Scott thanks for taking a look. Did it look wrong when you first opened the plan? I REALLY need to know as I think I've snapped. Just now I opened the dbx closed it and it looks fine. Weird is right. Worked on that for hours. Replaced the second floor problem disappeared. Re-opened plan problem re-appeared. I'm sending the file to an associate that knows very little about Chief. Hope it doesn't act up during his presentation. Thanks again.

So sorry. See attached. Oh Yeah it's an X5 file Floor Problem 1.zip
-
Wow. I've been working on this for a very long time this morning and for some reason the ceiling height in the main living area shows up about 5 - 6" higher than the second floor floor above in camera view. The ceiling height is set to 97" but in section and camera view it shows up higher than that and the floor above shows as if it's dropping down. I solved it once by replacing the second floor but when I re-opened the file the problem returned. Here's a back clipped cross section showing the higher ceiling, even thought the room dbx show a lower ceiling. and the dbx showing the setting Camera view showing the 2 levels. plan here FLOOR PROBLEM ZIP.zip

In the wall dbx on the roof tab look for "Roof cuts wall at bottom" - may solve your problem but like the other posters can't really tell what you're looking at without a pic or a plan.

Double Window Labels - Anyone Seen This Before?
HumbleChief replied to HumbleChief's topic in General Q & A
Maybe you don't copy and paste the window schedule from the first to the second floor so it can be seen both places in Layout - Maybe you place the first floor plan on the second floor Layout page and shrink the layout box to show just the window schedule - yeah that should work - never mind fixed it. -
Just opened this plan and found all (single) windows have 2 labels. Delete the window deletes both labels. Can't post too big plan file - curious if anyone's seen/fixed this?
