They are developing their software for android. They stated on( upFront.eZine) that is was easy to port to Android. Maybe Dan should hire some of their engineers!!!!!

  2. I agree with Ron,  a closed pline is the most accurate way to go.  Now if CA would just work it out so that the pline has a label that includes an area,  we can take that macro and shuffle it  around to our own area analysis text blocks.

Hey CA,   do us a favor and work this out,  thank you,  thank you very much.

    DSH,

It's Saturday They aren't working today!!!!

  3. Yes just draw a p-line around it and open the DBX. No sure if HD has schedules, but if you do, the "Room finish Schedule has a SF category to add to the Sched.

You can also use the living area, make sure it's checked in the CAD Defaults.

That is the way I do it more accurate.

  4. Hello Everyone,

I am using x5 Premier and was just recently asked by one of our builders to make my exterior dimensions read from the OSB sheathing instead of the stud.  I found what I thought to be the solution by changing the wall specification so that the dimensions would now read from the OSB, but then some of my interior dimensions were then also modified and now read from the drywall inside.  The frustrating part is I want to keep my interior dimensions on the studs, but I cant even force the dimensions to grab the stud anymore, they only hit the drywall.

So all of that to say, is there a way to have the best of both worlds and have the exterior dimensions read form the OSB, and have the interior dimensions stay on the stud?

Also just wanted to throw out there that I changed the wall specification after I had the house completely done, would that make an difference if I make that change before I start drawing the house?

Thanks so much for your help!

  5. WARNING WARNING WARNING,  a nay sayer is about to pontificate.

I have been following this discussion about the ROOM PLANNER APP,  and I (I have been wrong soooooooo many times),  but I think this  will never work for the power user.

I have measure thousands of jobs,  maybe more than Perry,  and then maybe not.  I cannot imagine trying to put an as built together on site.  The dimensions are never absolute.  When I get back to my office to draw the as builds based on field notes,  there are always minor discrepancies of 1"-3".  When I take field notes,  I draw the plan at 1/8"-1'-0" free hand.  I get the perimeter dimensions and then fit everything inside that space.  If the interior room sizes do not fit with in the space (on site),  I know I have a busted dimension and I go find it.

If you want to draw an as-built on site,  go for it,  but I would bet I could do it faster with the combination of using field notes and then drawing it at the office on a computer that had the power to put it together.  When I measure an as built,  it typically takes between 1.5 and 4 hours.  I go back to the office and put in on the computer takes an additional 6-12 hours.  For a net total of 8-16 hours for a COMPLETE AS BUILT including SITE PLAN,  ROOF PLAN,  EXTERIOR ELEVATIONS,  FLOOR PLANS,  FRAMING PLANS,  FOUNDATION PLAN AND 8-16 BUILDING SECTIONS.

If anybody thinks they can put together a set of as builts faster on site,  I would be most interested in learning the method,  please share.

Bottom line,  this ROOM PLANNER APP is probably geared more for the KITCHEN/BATH REMODELER or the CLOSET ORGANIZER COMPANY.  Putting together a full comprehensive set of as builts together for a house between 1200-3500 s.f. on site sounds like a daunting task.........

The point of the post is,  for you guys that think this will be a god send,  I seriously doubt it.

But,  I have been wrong so many times before, it would not surprise me if I was wrong again.

I'm not about your pontificating but as fart as measuring and drawing in the field we have done it thousands of times. We take as laptop with Chief and our trusty Disto and complete the field work on site.

  6. Ron,

Here's an alternative.  It's a Panel Symbol that hangs on the wall.  It has a 1/2" reveal all around it and you can stretch it to whatever size you need.  The panels will but up against each other.

IMO, it's not perfect but it seems to be easier than the Wall Material Region.

    Joe,

I imported it changed layer and material then put in in the plan.and it works great. I* agree much better then Material Region. Thanks much.

  7. I agree, I'd rather the label of the newly carved out room not display.  And, if you are subdividing a room, it seems to me that it wouldn't be hard for Chief to not label the smaller of the divided spaces.

It comes down to the difference between drafting in Chief and designing is Chief. Annoying breaks in concentration detract from the design flow of thought.

I agree with Ben and of course you. I think that Chief has to revisit many options that are automatically controlled be the program. Or at the least the ones that are hidden in the DBX choices. There are way to many controls that you have to turn on or off in  the DBX world. At least it would be great if Chief issued a list of these controls for us to have at our fingertips.

  8. Thanks much Scott, Your efforts were gallant but proved my point. It took you 15:27. After 16 versions of Chief the programmers don't have a clue on how stairs are built. I'm at a loss as to why more people aren't frustrated with all these little things that don't work in Chief. My advice would be to fix this stuff and forget about making more features.
