It depends on what your background is.

I came from an old school Architectural office where all the documents were tightly controlled and scripted, back in the days of hand drafting ink on mylar.

It was very tedious and often frustrating.

Many old architects are rolling over in their graves at the sight of COLOR in permit and construction documents! *gasp*

It took me a few years of working in Autocad once it started using color as a visual tool to distinguish line weights, when I started to wonder 'why not use color in my documents'?

might help the permit reviewer's and contractors see things more clearly.

It worked well and I never looked back.  I really don't give a damn if someone thinks my drawings are cartoonish. Color brings a lot more information to the documents when combined with textures and materials. I stopped designing on paper and switched to designing using 3d models, as CA is fast and easy when it comes to playing around with ideas.

Companies like CA and ACAD have worked hard to force the computer to look less like a computer rendered and more human, but I don't really think that is necessary.

We need to evolve with the technology, and I honestly believe that the future of our work will not be ported down into 'dumb' 2d documents.  Those will soon become a thing of the past.

Keep an open mind and look forward, not backward.

    Cheers,

Nothing as changed: The Main job is to put one's ideas to paper so they can be followed to produce the dream of the designer.

I feel that todays tools sometimes offer way to much latitude. It's time to get back to basics.

One very old mans opinion. (FYI I started with vcad 2d after years of  hand drafting, including mylar and ink, at the end of the day its the same chore

making your thoughts clear enough for someone to follow and BUILD).I went to the same old school as U.

The worst thing that has happened to computer drafting is AUTOCAD. Who remembers hem giving the program away to gain customers, that killed all the better companies that refused give for FREE.

No downloading or importing required.  I just did a search for "chaise" in the library browser and was able to find 5 in the core libraries that might work.

Thank you I really missed this one. Have a good day

    Hi Ron,

Spiral Stairs have very specific requirements which the current Stair Tool can't address:

    • Max Riser height = 9.5"
    • Min Tread depth at walk line = 6.5"
    • Min Tread width 26" inside Handrail

Generally the above will mean a minimum Tread angle of 30 degrees.

The number of treads will be determined by the floor-floor height which means the total included angle may be more than 360 degrees.

To get all of this Chief would need to have a completely separate tool for Spiral Stairs which would need to specify the above plus:

    • Inside Radius (pole diameter/radius)
    • Outside Radius
    • Bottom Elevation
    • Top Elevation

It's not realistic for Chief to just provide a stair symbol since there are too many variations.

Several years ago I created a set of 3D symbols (components) to make up any required Spiral Stair.  These included:

    • Treads (with and without risers)
    • Poles
    • Handrails (a variety of styles)
    • Landings

If you have a specific situation you need I can make the symbol for you - $100 each symbol.

It would a great service to users if they did spend the time and energy to give us a useful spiral stair tool. Just my opinion!!!!

Back in 2005 I started using Chief, I took 2 classes in San Diego and it really helped me get my head around all the basics I needed to draw these plans, never looked back after that. Before that I just couldn't get the correct procedure Chief likes so everything falls in place for you. Definitely worth it for me. If you use Chief the correct way it never lets you down.

    I'm Similar Perry,

I was using versacad 2d a great leap from the drawing board unfortunately it was just 2d but a real gain from the drawing board.

Then Chief 4.0 was available. I took a workshop from Steve Blake in ME Classes over his garage. Steve (unfortunately he has passed) was full of knowledge probably more than the Chief guys who some of witch he trained. Then until now it was off to the races.

Does anyone know of a realistic circular stair symbol that can work like regular stair stuff

    The symbol is pure crap

Thank you in advance for your answers

Chief Architect software is a privately held Company founded in 1981[7] in Palo Alto, CA. Initially the Company was named Advanced Relational Technology, Inc. (ART) and developed relational databases. The Company's founder, Jack Simpson, a physics PhD from Stanford University, was a native of Coeur d’Alene, Idaho and relocated the Company to Coeur d’Alene in the early 1990s. At that time, he changed the business from database software to home design software. In 2005, the name of the Company name was changed to Chief Architect, Inc.

Chief has a great for most all stairs EXCEPT CIRCULAR STAIRS. THE CIRCULAR STAIR SYMBOL IS VERY LACKING

This is the Method I also use nowadays too, Text ....and Text styles can do almost everything Rich Text can do, it does take a bit of work to make the text styles but those you can build over time as needed in your Templates.

    Mick.

    THANK YOU, Much appreciated

Bit of a big topic Ron, with lots of opinions I am sure, but for me I don't use Rich Text except in specifics cases nowadays, as Normal Text ( with Text Styles )

is much more configurable on the fly, just using the Layer the Text is on, change it there from 6" high to 4.5 " and it ALL changes throughout the Plan.

Thanks it is still confusing to me "HELP" isn't help. I'm surprised you R the only reply.

Small world, I just got a project of the same caliper and thinking the same thing.  But also ideas on steel joist/corrugated base with concrete slab second floor.  Not the Out Of The Box stuff in Chief.

I have downloaded 2d symbols but no 3D.
