  1. It's great to see how excited people are about our next version of Room Planner.

All I know is that the Android version of Room Planner is still in development but is expected to be released some time this quarter.  Which I guess means anytime in the next 3 months (assuming it isn't delayed again).

I also know that if you would like a tablet that will run Chief Architect Premier now then you should consider purchasing a Microsoft Surface instead.

Thanks Dermot the story keeps being the same are they really working on it.

  2. I've been away from CA for a couple of months on other projects but I downloaded X7 beta recently and I'm getting ready to start a new project (actually three) and am wondering what are the thoughts on the forum with using the beta version for new projects. Does anyone have any misgivings for doing this? Thanks and always appreciate everyone's advice.

No way unless you want to loose a bunch of work

  3. I think we posted something a few weeks ago that indicated that the Android version of Room Planner would be out later in the year. I'm not sure exactly when, but I know we are working on it.

Doug you stated on July 7th 2014 that the app would be out "later this year" It is 2015 and there is nothing. What's up

  4. Wondering if anyone else is seeing issues? Sluggish in general , undo in particular, changing tabs, some dbx.

I'm also getting more crashes than ever. I rarely get any, now several a day.

At first I thought it was a symbol I created, figured I mucked something up. Got rid of that.

Still crashing and seams to be random, doubt they are consistently reproducible. I'm not sure it's anything in particular other than the program wants a break.

i.e. copy a layer set, change one line style. Apply that to elevation and crash. Restart, do the same thing and it works fine.

I've had 4 or 5 today alone. Mostly working on one plan that was started in X6 but most work was done in 7. But I've had it on several other smaller projects (also started in X6)

Between that and a few new quirks I'm thinking I'm going back to X6 except for this specific project. I still have suitable files for all the rest in X6.

Not to be filp but the only way to eliminate crashes with beta is not to download beta. The reason it's Beta is it isn't stable and complete yet.

  5. Thanks for you feedback Johnny.

I do agree that how we draw lines is different than what is traditionally done in CAD programs.

I think that there is value in adding a tool that draws lines that won't connect with each other.

We continue to attempt to make Chief work better so any holes in the program that you see are things that we want to hear about.

Again thank you for your feedback. It is the interaction with and response to our customers to improve the program that has made Chief as good as it is and will continue to make it better in versions to come.

    Doug

With VCAD I have "construct extend" which will connect tow lines, "Construct break" , "Construct divide" which will divide a line into user dertermined no of segments, Weld which will weld two or more lines, It is quick and easy to use.

  6. Hello everyone,

I am designing a contemporary looking house plan for a client and they want siding like what you see in the picture. It is kind of a commercial look. I think it is hardie siding panels 3' x 6' or so. Do we have anything in chief architect that I can use for this or do I need to get one of you talented gurus to make it for me.

I use X3, I know, I know, I need to update, will soon.

Sorry there is no easy way.  Chief does not recognize the concept. It can be done but very time consuming.

  7. There are so many questions (in some cases - Why can't I......) posted here.  Many (and I really think most) of these questions result in an answer of "You Can".

There are several reasons for all these questions:

    1.  It's easier to just ask than to go searching the help files or searching the Forums for previous answers.

    2.  Most of the time someone will answer the query so the person asking the question is not encouraged to search.

    3.  This software is very complex - with many different ways of doing something, but not necessarily the same way as other software such as AutoCAD.

    4.  Few new users take the time to view the training videos, study the help docs, etc.

    5.  There are several "Hidden Handshakes" that even experienced users may be unaware of - things that get you into an edit mode that you didn't know about.

There are probably a lot more reasons, but I believe the 5 above are the main culprits.  What do we do about it?  What can we?  Should we?

Chief has become overly complicated with many areas with big holes which adds to the problem.

  8. Using X6. I have a client who wants a new residence using similar materials to the one in the attached photo from the internet. This will be built on the Tennessee/Alabama line where we have considerable rainfall, with some snow and ice. What are you guys on the west coast using for exterior materials for these designs? I have looked at numerous options from HardiPanel vertical siding to high-end European panels. But I can't seem to find this "look." He doesn't want Dryvit. Also, the roofs appear to be near flat. Are you using a non-vented roof design with EPDM for your roofing material? And, how do you flash the roof edges like shown? The photo is at a distance and hard to see, but the edge flashing appears to be at least the same color as the wall panels, or whatever you are using.

    Thanks, Mike

I would suggest  Hardie panels you do see joints. These panels are used in Seattle on many houses and apartments.

  9. I was talking to a couple of the CA people at IBS/KBIS in Las Vegas this morning.  I can assure you that there were som choice words used about you.  :D

I refuse to tell you who I was talking to or anything about Chief's development plans for the coming year. :P

And he hates old people like me.

  10. You can already set the label defaults for posts and beams.  If you would like to set them for other framing types, you should submit a feature request.

Dermot you guys should pole the power users before you introduce a feature like this. You seem to always get about 75% right when you don't

  11. I would love if the pocket doors would look real in plan view and would frame correctly!!!! The rough opening to be correct or to make it symbol that is like a prefab pocket door. It should now that it can only be so close to a corner... This would be a big help for the framers and so i do not have to draw a detail for them all the time...

Also please please make door side lites DOORS!! that are fixed. So they go on the right layer and have the same settings as doors, so i can adjust the side lite panels and glazi

It seems that they have unsuccessfully addressed the subject

  12. I posted this thread because I thought an "action definition" of Power User would benefit others. If you aren't currently considering yourself a Power User then how can you attain that for yourself.

It takes a decision to attain the ability followed by applied study and practice in most cases. In some instances help can be obtained from here and other training orientated sources (Chief Tutor.com, Chief Experts.com and several other sources). For basic understanding, the video series created and offered via Chief Architect Inc is unbeatable.

My point is that please do not wait until you are working on a project and get stumped as your only impetus to study and practice, rather set aside some time, every day for learning (study followed by practice of what was studied) until you attain the level of Power you desire.
