    you don't show where you are which means a lot of what your state, county, of town might require

    At one time, in my younger years, I was registered in 19 states. I was from Nh, now Arizona. I can safely say that, with a few exceptions, the situation is country wide. My comments are targeting the Nation Builders that seem to have the pull skirt som regulations.

    version 4, trained by the late Steve blake, ART trainer

    I also moved over from Home Architect.Befor that I started using VCAD in 1983. Much better product thanj AutoCad back then. It was menu driven much easier to use. The never went to 3D therefore the move to Chief. although I still draw some details in VCAD, much faster, then DXF and inport to Chief.

    By reading posts on this forum, I have noticed that many of you have witnessed many changes in the residential drafting/design industry over the years. Many of you were in the business when drawings were created by hand. Your success speaks volumes for your ability to adapt and stay ahead of the game.

    Even though I am not an architect, designer, or draftsman, I have spent many years in residential construction and have an interest in residential design.

    Due to the experiences that many of you have had, I thought it would be very interesting to get your thoughts/predictions concerning the short term and long term future of residential drafting/design.

    Some of the topics that may be of interest to all are listed below.

    * Technology advancements
    * Client demands
    * Regulatory changes (Building department/code changes)
    * Housing market strength
    * Office model (small firms, large firms, design/build)
    * Additional services offered
    * Design trends

    * Designer licensing/training/education requirements
    * Other

    What do you all envision for the future?

    I look forward to the interesting discussion.

    With over 62 years in the business much has changed. My top complaint is the quality of the product that is being produced. Here in AZ the market is dominated by the large national and regional builders that are producing, for better than a better word, crap and being successful at marketing and selling this product. It is a quanity over quality race to who can be number one. There are a few exceptions but alas they are far and few between. Technology, except for a few instances has taken a back seat to the quick dollar. Ok It is just my opinion.

    You can't do it with one dimension line, if the distance you want in inches is over a foot.  In this case, I would use Glenn's method of using more then one dimension line.

    Thank you Dermot for your feedback. I my opinion the dimension content is very lacking for this reason. As many of you know I started using CAd in the early days of pc cad., namely VERSACAD in the 80's. That program allowed what I'm asking for back then. Now here I'm going to get in trouble, You people at "ART" have to be more concerned about producing an efficient work product. In my opinion at times you are much more concerened with "colored hangers for 3D. Here is a very short list of missing function in Cheif.

    1. Dimensions, just talked about- could be remedied by having a toggle on each dimension with the choise of ft or inches.

    2. Metal door bucks and for windows.-  A must now that you are getting into light commercial work.

    3. Steel joists. -  already discussed with work-a-rounnds that take time.- It seems if AlaskanSons. can put an elegant solution your programer could do the same.

    4. realistic pocket door symbols.- seems like an easy fix that has been discussed for the last four verions or more.

    5. Many more production items should be addressed.

    I would suggest these items are available in many of your competitors products. You guys have made great strides on the whole in producing a mature product. I'm disapointed that so many of the "small" things fall through the cracks with your programers.

    Just the rambelings of an old man interested in saving production time.

  5. Great tutorial, for the life of me I can not understand why Chief does not make this part of the program.My standard refrain is: I can get colored hangers but not the framing I require to complete a project in a timely manner. I sure hope Dermot is watching. PLEASE

    The problem with things like steel bar joists or any other open web type joist design is that the object would need to be entirely unique for each and every possible length, height, and even width configuration.  Its not unlike a truss...There's no way a "truss" library object could really be used for anything except the one specific situation it was created for.

    The best I've been able to do with Chief was to create these type of joists myself using molding lines.  Use a regular molding extrusion for the continuous horizontal pieces and then use 3D moldings for the non-continuous elements.  The 3D molding parts need to be modified on a joist by joist basis.  It's a little tedious but I think its currently about the best we can do.  It would be nice if we had a parametric object to do this type of modeling or if the floor truss tool was somehow expanded to allow various extrusions other than just framing members.

    Well tell ne how its done with wood floor joists. I would think Steel would be similar
