How to get these 2 Roof patterns to align
QualicoreHomes replied to GrizzlyBear's topic in General Q & A
I copied the roof material and then adjusted the horizontal offset in the "Define Material" so it only moved metal from the one roof panel instead of moving it on all the roof panels. -
Thanks for your reply and insight, I would never have figured it out like that!! As to your question, I don't remember 100% anymore as I deleted those columns since then but I believe that for the Bottom Elev. column in that schedule I had selected "Bottom" in the "Available Columns" in the Schedule Specifications (attached picture) and for the other columns it was taking the information from Bottom Elevation or Elevation. Not sure if that makes sense or not Thanks again for everyone's help!!

That's a clever idea but I get a warning when I try that. I think that is because the gable wall (its just going to be a roof truss with an opening for the window) of the dormer doesn't line up with the main floor wall below. I guess I might just have to stay with having the measurement displayed in the decimal version unless there is a script or code that will show it in the fraction version? It seems a bit silly with everything that this fabulous program can do, that although I can have a measurement displayed as meters, centimeters, millimeters, yards, feet & inches, inches only as decimal but not as a measurement with inches in the fraction style version. Thanks for the replies!!

I usually do not give my window heights on the elevation view, maybe I'm weird that way :). This is the elevation view of the project where this came up. Normally the elevation height when given off the particular floor the window is on is good (as in the schedule - column "Bottom Elev.") but in this case it is a window in a fake dormer and no floor so that measurement given from the second floor (actually not sure why Chief reports it as that when there is no 2nd floor, but I guess that is beside the point) is useless. With this plan I did add an elevation marker on the elevation view but that 17-1/16 in the schedule bugs me because it is a useless number so that is why I tried to have it report as the elevation height taken from 0. I mostly got it but I was hoping to make it perfect and get it shown in inches only (with fractions) instead of inches in the decimal way.

I feel like this is a really dumb question but I am stumped. I am simply trying report the window elevation (or height) in a window schedule in inches only but no matter what I try, it won't do it. I have attached a screenshot of the window schedule. The last 3 columns are about the elevation (I want to end up with one). The third from the right is the bottom elevation as I used to use it. This column shows the measurement in the right format but it measures the elevation from the floor that the window is on. I'm trying to make a column that shows the distance from the 0 mark. So I created two additional columns and I can get the right elevation showing but no matter what I try, I can't get it to show it in inches only, like the format of the Bottom Elevation column. Any suggestions? Thanks in advance!

Thanks for the clarification! Yes maybe stay away from him

Thanks for the reply Bob and Alan!! I'm just not sure how to take your comment "this set up absolutely screams" Alan? Scream like: back out of the deal asap or does it scream like screaming tires that perform well? Thanks again for the feedback, much appreciated!!

Hello, I am looking at getting a new computer. I browsed around at bit on the chat but its hard to compare. This is what I am looking at: Option A AMD Ryzen 9 3.7GHz - 12 Cores - 24 Threads (Processor) 32GB DDR5 5600MHz (Memory) GeForce RTX 4070 -12BG (Video Card) Option B AMD Ryzen 9 7950x 4.5GHz - 16 Cores - 32 Treads, Liquid Cooled (Processor) 64GB DDR5 5600MHz (Memory) GeForce RTX 4070 Ti 16GB (Video Card) There is about a $750USD difference between the two options. I'm not much into the rendering and currently don't even use the Ray Trace much. To me speed is important as now with my current computer there is quite a bit of waiting involved at times when opening different views or even when executing (simple) program commands. Do you have any suggestions? (good/bad choice, overkill/not fast enough, etc.) Thanks!

Thank you very much, I will have to rename some of the walls but that should work perfectly! Many thanks!!

Hello Rob, Sorry, I did not see your reply till now. Yes I agree and I was hoping to get something as simple as just showing whether the wall, in which the window is installed, is a 2x4, 2x6 or 2x8 wall for the same reason as you indicated. Would there be a possibility to report the wall thickness like that?
-
Thank you, that worked!

Thanks for that Joey, My apologies for my ignorance but I can't get it. Added a column in the schedule and a custom field in the object info but no luck in getting a wall thickness. Am I totally on the wrong track here or missing something small in the field value? Thanks for the help!

Thanks for that Solver! I'm not familiar at all with macros or how to write them. If you are interested in writing one for me let me know what you would charge for that. Thanks again!

Hello, I would like to add a column to my window schedule that specifies the wall thickness, is that a possibility? I have a project with several different wall thicknesses so I thought it would be nice to add a column where it would indicated whether the wall is a 2x4, 2x6 etc. Thanks for any help!!

Thanks everyone for your help, it is much appreciated! As I was busy with Mark's suggestion and couldn't figure out how to rotate the symbol, Rene's video came in and got us to the finish line. I ended up making 2 separate doors on different layers, 1 open and 1 closed for the different views. I really like how you go over the Q & A in your video Rene, I will continue to check that out. Thanks again for all the help!!

Interesting, thanks for the replies and pointing me in a direction, much appreciated!!

Is this a possibility in Chief?

With this system, are your still pressing 2 or 3 buttons to go from one action to another? For example; If I'm on the "main" screen and I want to draw an exterior wall it be one button to go to walls and then one more to select which type of wall. Then if I want to draw a door in that wall I would have push the back button to go to the main screen, the opening button and then the type of door, so that be 3. Do you find you are pushing a lot of buttons for one action? Are the hot keys not faster as I don't have to go back to the main screen etc? I would be sold if there was one big screen/device with all the commands that I need on there.

Hmm I'm about halfway I guess, but you must have a VIP membership that you get 20 versions in 15 years and burn through a lot of computers . However, my question is, do you professional Chiefers have the same results with drawing cross sections? I find I'm spending a lot of time editing those and think it will take me another 25+ years to get those so that I don't have to edit a single line when sending them to the layout.

I have a similar question about separating new construction from existing construction. My question is about this issue in elevation drawings. I don't do a lot of renovation plans but when I do, I like to overlay the existing construction with a somewhat transparent filled polyline to give it a "faded" look. With simple additions it is usually no problem although it can be time consuming but it really gets difficult when I have a covered deck added to an existing part of the house (as in the picture). It takes too long to make all individual polylines for in between the railings etc. I was hoping it would work with placing the existing construction on a separate layer and have it displayed on the elevation drawing with grey lines instead of the black lines for the new construction. Then I thought to make a separate drawing group called existing and place that behind the cad group or even place it on an different drawing group behind the cad group but that also doesn't seem to work. Do you have any ideas or pointers?

X14 Layout Wall Surface Triangle Lines - come back for anyone else?
QualicoreHomes replied to Kbird1's topic in General Q & A
I have had angled lines in some of my cross section views in X14 as well. When I moved the camera forward or backward small amounts they would disappear. Not sure if this is the same thing you are talking about or if it is of any help but thought to share.- 10 replies

The customer wants it in a DXF file. They are not using the elevations or heights and only use the total station for laying out exterior, party walls and deck columns. Are you saying a CSV file would export this better?
-
Hello, I'm hoping someone can help me with exporting Point Markers. I have a building that needs to get imported into a TopCon Total station. I put Point Markers at each building corner and at the center of the sonotube columns. Problem is, when exporting the file in a DXF format and imported into the total station the Point Markers become to separate lines and we lose the center point of the Point Marker. Is there something else that I should be using to get point references in the total station? Thanks for any help!

Thank you all very much!! You people are amazing with your knowledge and willingness to share! Learned something new again as I had never used the clipped option before and thanks for the plan/cabinets Mark!
