Shane,

a) you could create your DW / cabinet combo in an X16 plan and copy/paste it forward into your X17 plan (old school).

b)  you can modify a base cabinet to show back panel only.  Here, below, I show a base cabinet where I have turned off toe kick, done an appliance opening for the front face, and for the left and right panels I have selected "none."  I would think this would work for your situation.

You don't have to do it in X16, you can place a dishwasher in a cabinet if the diswasher is set to inserts into cabinet front in the Options panel of the symbol

Thanks for this information. I tried this and it stuck back of the DW on the front of the cabinet so its sticks out onto the floor. I know I am missing something.... is there a setting somewhere to get it to recess into the cabinet?

The Y origin of the symbol controls that, then update the block.

OTOH how do you see this being dealt with IRL, in the field? None of the cabinets would have a finished back as standard.  The DW need both water and electric and this island needs outlets to meet code. Just leave it to the KD to sort out?

At the very least I would put a panel across the entire back of the island. In most cases if i'd frame a short wall back there to make mechanicals and installation easier. Of course then you have to cover the ends of that wall.

This is a very good point and thanks for bringing it up. I don't show the wall or panel there and haven't for some time. It's definitely worth me looking into again.

Just FYI mark you no longer have to change the Y origin as that shifts the origin of the symbol, they added an additional function to change the inset. This makes it so that you can insert it into a cabinet OR insert without a cabinet without the Y offset messing up placement for one or the other
