4hotshoez
I know that some users have both Softplan and Chief. What is the best way to transfer a project file between the two? Assuming that you can. Because I would like to propose our office to transition from Softplan to Chief Architect, but I need to offer some assurance that the to can communicate if needed. Like for an old project.
AndyGump
They do not communicate with each other directly in any manner. Good idea though on transitioning from SP to CA. Andy.
GaryM8
The only way is to export/ import either .dwg or .dxf. Softplan and Chief do not speak the same language.
4hotshoez
What about through Sketchup?
4hotshoez
Or any 3D files like .3DS or .DAE or .VRML? How about a web link that gives all of Chief's accepted import/export file formats?
Solution lbuttery Posted August 15, 2014 Solution Share Posted August 15, 2014 if you have the demo version look under MENU - FILE - EXPORT and MENU - FILE - IMPORT I think there is some info lost regardless of format used most CAD software is not setup to play well in the sandbox with each other unless they use BIM file formats true BIM apps have better inter-operability but even then not sure it is 100% Lew
GaryM8
You asked about transferring files between Softplan and Chief. You received the answer. If you want to explore intermediary programs that is a very different question. How about you do the looking for your own question as to what Chief imports and exports? Not difficult.

lbuttery
Gary: so what's wrong with asking questions on the forum ??? isn't that what the forum is for ??? someone may have had experience doing inter-operability successful or not Lew
4hotshoez
How many files does Softplan and Chief use multiple files to create a single model for multiple floors and then 2D documents? Or do they lump everything into one for both 2D and 3D? For example, Autocad is all one file for building and layouts unless you use external references, but multiple floors are best handled in separate files. lbuttery
Chief can have 30 floors in one plan the conflict comes in trying to show two walls/doors/windows occupying the same space such as existing versus new Chief model as essentially created in 3D and then the 2D docs are generally generated from the 3D 2D can also be created manually in 2D cad I find it best to create multiple buildings in separate plans then create symbols of those buildings then place the symbols in a master site plan however, multiple buildings can be in one plan - if desired Lew
