crown molding at sloped ceilings

Recommended Posts

I've added a sloped ceiling plan in a room, turned off the auto ceiling in the room dbx so I could see the vault. The problem now is crown molding does not follow the slope. (image attached) Whats the best way to handle this?

My guess is that you will have to do it manually using a 3D molding p-line. This may still prove to be a little tricky where the horizontal line of the ceiling changes to the sloped ceiling area at the corners, but I believe it can be accomplished.  Think how it would be done in "real life" and getting the crown molding to match up and come together in those areas. If I get a chance later today I'll try to show an example.

Larry is correct - the reality is this is a problem in real life to make those transitions.  You end up having to include a straight run before transitioning to the angle.  I personally think this isn't very good looking at all.

I agree with Johnny as it does not look good on sloped ceilings. It's where the slope meets the wall and its the top and bottom edge of the crown molding is where it does not look good and the steeper the pitch the less attractive it looks. The joint at the peek is also not very aesthetically pleasing either. Crown molding is designed for a 90 deg. corner at the top and bottom edge.
