CA has stated many times that getting a "gaming" video card is best for Chief study the specs for gaming rigs and go with something similar Lew
-
I would go with the i7 for running Chief also CA says the more cores the better Lew
-
Johnny: yes, it is - something to do with a bulge it's not really what was said - but the printable version Lew
-
Scott/Glenn: maybe yest - maybe no making symbols is how I have handled these situations since I haven't tried this particular scenario ??? its the method I use - if you don't like it - don't use it Lew
-
Scott: Nuts to you to Lew
-
Todd: place the house in a separate plan and then save it as a 3D symbol then place the 3D symbol in the "master" plan that has the terrain adjust the terrain as needed then place the 3D symbol as needed with a complex building and complex terrain I find this method easier Lew

.layout file extension used by both Chief and Sketchup Layout
lbuttery replied to larrymac's topic in General Q & A
Larry: no solution - I doubt if either CA or Trimble will change the extension name I have long advocated that CA add the version id to the extension names such as .planX8 and .layoutX8 this is why I prefer using "Open with" as I usually have the current plus two prior versions of Chief installed this came from the days when many of our clients were fellow Chiefers once I get ver 8 installed it will be the only version installed - since I am retired still using X6, installed but never bothered with X7 Lew -
I took the Intermediate class twice almost a decade ago when CA was still working with regional distributors the first class was "lame" and was suppose to be for ver 10 but the instructor was still using ver 9.5 within half a day he was referring to me for many of the questions he couldn't answer later that year I took the Intermediate class with Gary Doski and it was a fantastic class I have no idea how the classes are with CA running them I can only hope they are more consistent ... if you are not well versed in the ins and outs of all that Chief has to offer then I would suggest the Intermediate class you could also check out classes with Dan Baumann at www.chiefexperts.com and David Potter and some of the other independents Lew

Chopsaw: I wouldn't count on the next update this issue has been complained about for over a decade I guess CA doesn't consider user "frustration" when they evaluate priorities Lew
-
just for the record I also used 24 x 36 for new homes but for the last few years all our projects were remodels and 11 x 17 was fine for the few counties that mandated 18 x 24 or larger I just printed at 22 x 34 Lew
-
ok, found it MENU - FILE - PRINT - DRAWING SHEET SETUP Lew
-
I've used an 11 x 17 layout template for so long I have forgotten how to create a new layout template I need a template sized 36" w x 24" h I need it this actual size as I am creating an interpretive sign for an historical site - Terrapin Tower that was built by my ancestor in 1833 it will be similar to the attached sign Lew
-
X5 was three versions ago - did you mean X8 ??? check the comparison charts on the HD website and the chief premier website there used to be a comparison between HD PRO and Premier but I don't know where it is probably best to contact CA's sales dept to discuss consider that PRO cost 20% of what Premier costs cost of PRO can be applied to upgrade to Premier Lew
-
David: yes, but create the 18 x 24 at 1/8 scale \ then print at 200% to get 1/4 scale on 36 x 48 yes, 1 page at a time layout I would expect the many, many, new features of current HD PRO to be light years ahead of Chief ver 8 Lew

If you use a workaround for something, then you need to account for those materials Joey: this was my primary caution I agree with everything you said in your last post Lew
-
Joey: every "workaround" requires manual intervention with the ML for everything I have read on the forum since I stared with ver 9.5 is that it is NOT possible to build a model in chief and then generate an ML and use it as is with no changes manual intervention and great care is needed if this has changed I would like to hear it from other chiefers you are the only chiefer I know of that insists the ML is perfect as is Lew
-
Stuart: ver 8 or ver X8 ??? there are a few chiefers who make great usage of the ML but not without a lot of manual intervention I think most chiefers find the ML to be a "hassle" and potentially unreliable without a lot of verification the better the model the better the ML Lew
-
but it is not as able as even Chief Architect Version 8 David: It's been over a decade since I used ver 9.5 but I would think that the current version of HD PRO would be far more advanced than Chief 8 even with the limit on layout size especially since layout at 1/8" scale then doubled at print shop can give 36 x 48 1 page at a time limit while an inconvenience is not a showstopper and it sounds like the OP is not even interested in layout Lew

Looking for service to create house plan in X7
lbuttery replied to Chieftmbm50's topic in Seeking Services
Perry: you too Lew -
JC: I agree with Alan ??? if that is all you need then get one of CA's $79 HD products but I think they can only export in .DXF check the comparison chart on CA's website for the HD products or call CA's sales dept SCSI ??? I used to use that a lot but again an antique now Lew

If people catch on by themselves that they have to change it to an invisible wall they are more likely to remember the wall width needs to be changed instead of just the footing. That is INSANE - if that was CA's reasoning :( these are the kind of "secrets" that can cause great frustration and annoyance with Chief CA "stop the madness" Lew

Otis: Hi, we have a similar firehouse here in NF that needs restoration https://www.facebook.com/HighlandFireHouse/ awhile back there were some pics on EBAY that caught my eye until I realized the building was in RI, but used the word NIAGARA seems lots of fire dept's across the country called themselves NIAGARA Lew

Perry: you are wrong that it is legal to copy and make changes you are right that there is little enforcement but the point is - that someday - someone COULD sue will it ever happen ??? Lew
