  1. I'm using half round gutters and the position they are automatically put in does not suit me. I unlock them and position them where I want them then lock and turn off that layer. Later when I'm looking at a camera view I notice they are all back to there original positions. What are the steps to make them stay where I want them to be? It must be something simple I'm missing. It's the little things that can be so frustrating with this program sometimes. Thanks ahead of time for your time and advice..

One note: I have two different roof overhangs that require the gutter to be positioned differently to each overhang.

  2. I've done very little raytracing over the many years I've been using CA. Every now and then I give it a go and then I remember why I've used it very little. I'm trying to do an exterior raytrace and the shadows are almost black. Sometime back I remember a thread discussing this problem. and I've been trying to do a search to find that thread, but I'm running into a brick wall. CA's search engine is a whole other story. Can anyone steer me to that thread or tell me what exterior raytrace setup I should be using? Thanks in advance for your time and advice.

  3.        If both sides are the same pitch and you want different wall plate heights, this is how I would do it. Manually place the first roof plane on the wall and stop the ridge line at the off center position you want and then look to see what the ridge height is and copy it. Then manually place the second roof plane and in plan view manually move that ridge to your off center one. Now open the dbx. on the second roof plane, lock the pitch and paste the ridge height of the first roof plane into the dbx. ridge height of the second roof plane.

If you want different pitches, but the same wall plate heights on both sides I would do it like this. Manually place your first roof plane and extend it to where you want the ridge to be and then open that roof plane dbx. and copy the ridge height again. Next manually draw your other roof plane and extend the ridge, in plan view, to the first ridge. Open that roof plane dbx., lock the baseline height, paste the first roof plane ridge height into the second roof planes' ridge height dbx. and close.  One or the other of the two suggestions should be what you are after.  Good Luck/

  4. Eric...................Thank you for your time and advice. Much appreciated. I figured a P-solid would work as a work around. I thought maybe the was a "correct" solution and that I was doing something wrong. Of course that's not to say a good work around isn't correct. :) Have a great day.

  5. Glenn..............In the foundation, which I'm just starting to work at, I have many different sizes of blocks in the same wall with different sizes at different locations around the structure. Also how I want the brick exposed on the inside and outside at the foundation level with the floor level on the interior is different at different locations. Plus where there are tie ends to other foundations, terraces and retaining wall makes making the model accurate very difficult. It's really hard to explain. I felt, for me anyway, it would be much easier to use the "open below" and place my concrete floor, and flagstone manually. There are times when using CA I can't get it to do or look correct with the way I want and it's just much easier to do certain thing manually and this is one of those cases.

  6. I have a door (not the frame) that is elevated off the floor.   door.thumb.JPG.a1481679c13ab201dec7c36d36f54038.JPG  I've exhausted all my ideas. Any suggestions? As far as I can tell the room structure with the door problem is the same as the room structures behind the doors to the left of my problem door. As you can see, those doors are okay. As always all advice is much appreciated.

I make sure that I'm blocking all items. Is the eclipse in the middle of the window not considered a line to CA?

Eric & Michael.............I'm a little rusty. I've been away from the program for awhile. I was doing what Eric should in his thread and it (CA) was working. I closed the program when I went for lunch. When I came back and opened the program, I did the same thing before I left for lunch and CA worked as I thought it should. I should know by now that when all else fails close out and reopen the program. This isn't the first time that has been the fix. Thanks to you both for your advice. Have a great weekend. IT'S SRING!!

  9. What's the process of copy an object around a circle? There must already be a thread somewhere, but I'm unable to ask the correct way to find it in "search". I've tried every process that makes sense to me. I'm an old AutoCAD user and it was so simple in that program. I must be missing something really easy.

  10. Mick.............I'll take some time and look close at you idea. The only crashes (lock ups) I've had is when trying to work with the plan you sent me as I stated earlier in a thread. Hmm---------strange isn't it! I've not had any problems working on my plan with crashes. Just seems odd we'll both having issues with plans sent to each other. It may be my trusses on your end. Before I made them into symbols I converted them to solids so I could get the textures on all the faces of the trusses correct. It was a real pain, but as p-solids the textures were going in a sorts of directions. I wish there would be a way to correct that without making them solids and changing each face.

  11. Mick...............In #7 thread I show an attach picture showing a "cap" on top of the brick. The brick are well protected under the overhangs. On the gable ends there will be additional details for protection. I just haven't got there with the model yet. . I was looking at that idea earlier. It seems that no matter what material is at the exterior, the soffit stops at the exterior face of the wall. I'll play with your idea a little later I'm end to other areas of the design right now.

  12. Mick........... I feel I have a good understanding of CA's "baseline". The issue I was having with the decking height on the truss was just a matter of correcting the baseline height. I've come to the conclusion the soffit stops at the face of the exterior layer and there is no changing that. The only way I see to work around the soffit problem is to revert back to two separate roof planes again or change the position of my blocking. The offset of the 8x8 on top of the wall is a detail that is on other building on the property and the client would like it on this building also. Thanks for all great advice. It's very much appreciated. Have a great day.

  13. Eric.................Blocking worked. I could swear I've done that many times without blocking the items.

Lew................To be honest, I didn't think about blocking the fireplace "box" and sending to library. I know I didn't want to send it to the library as a symbol because I wouldn't be able to modify it later.

Thank you all for you bits of CA wisdom. Have a great day

  14. I had built a fireplace in an older version plan using a series of p-solids that I want to bring into a new plan. I brought the old plan into X10 and saved it as an X10 plan. I then clicked on the items I wanted in the old plan, clicked on the copy/paste icon, went into the new plan and tried to paste them, but my "copy/paste" icon would not show. I'm sure I've done this same thing for items many times before with no problems. Am I missing something simple or is there a problem?

  15.  Mick................Thanks so much for your help. It's all in understanding the program. Your directions were right on. I had to play around a little with your directions so the decking would sit on top of the trusses, but that was manageable  I was able to download your  plan and look at it in plan view, but as soon as I tried a camera view CA would freeze. I was able to open a cross section, but as soon as I clicked on the roof CA would freeze up. I'm using X10 with the latest update. I don't know what was going on. What I was trying to find out from your plan version was what material you were using for you soffit material. Is it something in CA's library? I was looking in there but I'm unable, up to this time, to find a v-groove decking material. One other question. I'm going to be blocking between the timber trusses on top of the 8x8 sill beam, but the painted soffit doesn't go back far enough..  5aacfe8d97b2f_RAFTERDETAIL.thumb.JPG.aacf4a3f783b4d24d772310ffb70ba21.JPG    Is there a way to make it reach the blocking?

  16. Eric...............Thank you. You "pulled through" again! I was hoping I was just missing a setting. I unchecked that box for the upper roof also, but I lost the decking material altogether.

Strange, because the lower roof was derived from the upper roof at the start. Have a great day.
