Another nice feature would be to have all of the layers in the layer set that you currently have on show together and at the top of the layer display. They might me indented a few spaces to further identify them as the layers of the current active layer set. Thanks, Mike

I'm new to Chief, I'm using X-8. I've set-up some layer sets and annotation sets for my plans. After setting up several layer sets for different parts of the plans such as floor plans, elevation, framing plans and foundation plan I noticed there is no reset button. For example when I am working on the floor framing and locating beams and the direction of the floor joists I will turn on the plumbing fixture layer. I do this so I can make sure I am not placing a beam right under the toilet or shower drain. I will also turn off layers temporarily if that layer is getting in the way at the moment. I noticed that if I forget to turn on or off those layers when I change to another layer set, those on or off layers will now be saved as apart of that layer set. I would be very helpful if there was a reset button that would turn on or off the layers, line colors and line types that was originally set-up in that layer set. Is there a way to have Chief do this? Thanks, Mike

In the late 80's he move down to Simi Valley, Ca where I live after going through a divorce. He was doing architectural rendering when I meet him. He told me that he use to be the base guitarist for Mitch Rider. I thought he was bullshitting me until a year latter when Mitch Rider came to L.A. and we were invited back stage. After listening to the two of them talking about the old day for about an hour it was clear that he use to be a member of the band. John moved back to Alaska in 1991. We talk a couple of times a year. He is a Revit user. Every time we speak he spends at least a half hour trying to convince me to switch to Revit.
-
He also plays in a band that tour around Alaska. He use to be the base guitarist for and old rock group called Mitch Rider and The Detroit Wheels back in the late 60's early 70's.

Thanks Michael. Buy the way, you wouldn't happen to know a John Rankin in Anchorage? He also been doing architectural plans there for many years.

Thanks. Here is the plan. There is several other mock-ups on this plan as well. The one I'm talking about is the plan at the lower left side of the screen. I have also attached the Ray trace image. If you look at the perspective view the beam, fascia board and knee braces all appear bright white. In the ray trace image the beam looks like a light gray. Thanks, Mike Truss Roof.zip

I hate to ask, but how to I attach the file to this post? I do not see anything that allows me to attach a file to this post. Thanks, Mike

The fascia board, knee brace, beam and garage door and trim are all have the same color selected. Each one has a slightly different shade of white. The knee brace which I selected from the core library is the brightest white. The garage door is a little less bright white then the fascia board a little less bright. Then you have the beam which is a light gray. I can see that the slight color differences would take place depending on the direction of the light source. But the gray beam is right on top of the knee braces. Both of them have vertical surfaces. I would have assumed that their colors would be close to each other. I will try and play with the emissive setting s and see if that helps. Thanks Mike

I'm new to Chief, I'm using X-8 I'm getting two different colors showing up in the ray trace than in the perspective view. I have a project that has a long over hang. This over hang is being supported by a beam that itself is being supported by knee braces that are attached to the wall. The knee braces and the beam are painted porcelain white. When I ray trace it the beam has a grayish color while the knee braces are bright white. I created the beams using polyline solids I then changed the material to Fir. In the perspective view I used the material eyedropper to select the color of the knee braces and apply it to the beam. Looks right in the perspective view but not in the ray trace view. I've added lights in front of and under the eaves to see if that would correct the color difference. Still shows a grayish beam and bright white knee braces. Is there a way to correct this color difference? Thanks, Mike

I'm new to Chief. I'm using X-8 I am in the process of doing my first project in Chief. I have been using AutoCAD since 1993 and have accumulated hundreds of details and notes over these years. I have a couple of questions. Is there an easy and quicker way of importing these details and notes over to Chief other than one at a time. Question 2, Is it better to insert the details and note directly into the layout sheet or should they be inserted into the plan file first, then send them to the layout sheet from the plan file? The reason I am asking is when I inserted some note directly into the layout sheet from the user catalog the the notes came in at least 10 times the normal size. When I inserted that same note into the plan file the note came in at the correct size. It seems to me that inserting the details and notes directly into the layout sheet would same a lot of time. But it seems that doing so you have to deal with the details and notes coming in way to large. Thanks, Mike

I'm looking to make the upper cabinets more translucent. The upper cabinets are hiding the appliances below them.
-
When I click on the cabinet then go to fill style everything is grayed out. To make a change you have to change the pattern type to something other than default or none. But doing that you are adding a hatch pattern to the cabinets which I do not want.
-
Great, that works. I just have to remember how each idem is changed. For cabinets go the the default settings, cabinets, fill style, then transparency. and you do not get there by click on the cabinet itself. For the hood, range, dishwasher, etc. you do click on the appliance then go to the bottom left corner a click on open symbols, 2D block, then transparency, Thanks for the help, Mike
-
That worked. I was making the mistake of clicking on the cabinets itself and entering the cabinet specifications. Is there a way to change the transparency of the range hood ? I do not see anything under the default settings. I clicked on the hood to open it's specification and see nothing regarding transperency. Thanks, Mike

Chopsaw, Where do you change the transparency of the upper cabinets ? I've looked in the wall cabinet specifications. I do not see anything regarding transparency. Thanks, Mike

I'm new to Chief, I'm using X-8. I'm in the process of setting up annotation sets for my projects. I'm working on the electrical annotation set at the moment. The question I have is regarding the kitchen cabinets. The upper cabinet hides what is below the cabinets. If I have appliances below the cabinets they are hidden by the upper cabinets. Is there a way to have the appliances not be hidden by the upper cabinets? Also the lower cabinets counter top has a light salmon color fill which is o.k. for the floor plans. I would like to remove it for the electrical annotation set. Is there a way to have the counter top fill color be removed for only the electrical annotation set? Thanks, Mike

I am new to Chief. I am using X-8. I am working on my first project using Chief and am running into problems in perspective views. This is a simple room addition project. When I first input the floor plans into Chief and viewed it in perspective view everything looked correct except a part of the roof which Tommy help me correct. Now when I view the plans in perspective view some of the walls, doors and finish floors are not showing up correctly. I have attached my plan to this post and have listed the problem areas below. The removed wall between the existing bathroom and bathroom addition is showing a framed wall in the perspective floor and framing overviews. This was not showing up yesterday. Door 10 does not show up in the perspective framing overview. It does show up in the perspective floor overview, but the studs show up through the door in this view. At the end of one of the kitchen walls in perspective view the drywall is missing. In the entry the wood flooring is missing and only the concrete slab shows. All of this was showing correctly yesterday. The only thing I have done since then is to add a water heater, FAU and labeled some existing doors and windows. Does anyone know what might be happening to cause this and how to correct it ? Thanks, Mike 2016-14-Roof.zip

New and existing door and window call outs on the plans
capitaldesigns replied to capitaldesigns's topic in General Q & A
William, I did what you suggested for one of sliding glass doors. I remove the check mark for suppressing label and checked specify label and typed in (E) 8068. What I got was a new door in the door schedule called (E) 8068 and a call out circle at the door. I am not getting the (E) 8068 label at the door.- 8 replies

New and existing door and window call outs on the plans
capitaldesigns replied to capitaldesigns's topic in General Q & A
This will remove those windows from listing in the door and window schedule. Is there a way to have those unchecked doors and windows have their size show up on the floor plan and identified as an existing door or window? Or do I have to type it for each existing door and window?- 8 replies

I'm new to Chief, I'm using X-8 I am attempting my first project using Chief. This is an simple addition and remodel project. My question is regarding identifying new and existing doors and windows on the plans. For new doors and windows I use a door and window schedule. For existing doors and windows I identify them on the plan. For example I will call off a door as (E) 2668 and a window as (E) 6040 Window. Is there a way to have Chief call out the existing doors and window on the floor plan while at the same time showing the new doors and windows on a door and window schedule? Thanks, Mike

I'm new to Chief, I'm using X8 I'm working on my first addition/remodel project using Chief. I have been trying to find 2D symbols for bathroom and kitchen fixtures that I can show as dashed lines that will represent the fixtures being removed. I've looked everywhere I can think of and have not found any 2D symbols of bathroom or kitchen fixtures. Is there a way to convert a 3D symbol into a 2D symbol that will only show up in a plan view and not in a perspective view? Thanks, Mike

New concrete slab to existing concrete slab
capitaldesigns replied to capitaldesigns's topic in General Q & A
Glenn, That's exactly what I am looking for. I'm not familiar with Slab Pour Number and an auto mono slab. I tried to look those up in Chief's reference manual and on youtube. I did not find anything. Do you know of any video's regarding slab pour number an auto mono slab? Thank You, Mike -
I'm new to Chief. I'm using X-8. I'm working on my first project using Chief. The client is adding 4 small one story additions to a one story house. The question I have is how do you draw the new concrete slab to the existing concrete slab? The first thing I did was input the walls, roof planes, roof framing and foundation of the existing house. Then I input the walls of the 4 additions. Then I manually added the roof planes of the new additions. I then selected the build foundation command. This re-drew the entire foundation as if it were all new. Exterior footings of the existing house that are now between the house and additions show as an interior footing. I want the line of the exterior edge of the existing house to still show as a solid line, not a dashed line. I also tried the slab with footing command. The problem there is that it adds footing on all sides of the slab where I only need the footings on the new exterior walls of the addition and not edge of the new slab that comes in contact with the existing house. I do need a 6"x6" thickened slab edge where the new slab comes in contact with the existing slab. Another thing is I cannot change the size of each footing separately. I attach the plan that I have been working on. I drew a partial foundation plan on how I would like to look. Any suggestion would be greatly appreciated. Thanks, Mike 2016-14-5-6-2016.plan
