Requesting Help With Shed to Shed Roof Intersection
ChristianA replied to SureFoot's topic in General Q & A
No problem. I may be helpful to put that beam on the level where that wall is. It took me a bit to find it because it was on level 1 and that upper wall is above that. -
Requesting Help With Shed to Shed Roof Intersection
ChristianA replied to SureFoot's topic in General Q & A
Try reversing the direction of the wall in question. Also, your 12" roof beam is outboard of that upper wall, which will cut the siding out. See my screenshot. -
Does anyone know how to control this behavior? I can't find any setting to adjust ceiling joists so they properly sister next to the rafter. When I generate framing for roofs, the ceiling joist centers are always 3/4" from the rafters instead of 1 1/2". I am using a framing reference BTW. Thanks!

Thanks for the info. I was thinking a solid or a soffit.

Hi all, I have a situation where a stair landing will float and not have any supporting walls below it. How should I approach enclosing the landing above it? Please see the attached pic and plan file. Thanks! Unit 4.plan

As I like to say, "dude!!" Worked like a charm after watching your second video. Appreciated! How the hell did you figure that trick out? Christian

Hi Rene, Thanks for the vid. I was super hopeful after watching. I tried your method on my file and as soon as I move the room divider up to the edge of the post, the solid wall goes right back to the corner. Does it make a difference that the rail wall and solid walls make up the room? Here's the plan file for reference Christian Unit 9.zip

I have a situation where I want the corner post of the rail wall to extend all the way to the corner. I have everything, and the solid wall always goes to the corner and the first post of the rail sits next to it. Am I missing something here? Thanks in advance. Christian

Right now, that's what I'll need to do for mulled units I have all single units automatically populating window data so I don't need to manually enter anything.
-
Are you using "referenced" vs "owner" in your script?
-
I think this has been asked a couple years ago...but is there any way to access ANY component information from a mulled unit when labels are set to single unit? I'm trying to accomplish providing both NLV and egress info for single windows as well as opening and header info for mulled units in a single schedule. When I set the label setting for mulled units to each component, the header and opening info is incorrect. From what I have come up with, I'm not sure it's possible. I'd love to be told different. Thanks! Christian

Jonathan, I ended up making it work. I had no idea that layer existed. Thank you so much!

I will check it out. Thanks so much for the guidance!

Yes, that's exactly what I mean. But if you are just widening the outside stringers, I tried that, and I found that it looks weird in plan view (CA doesn't show the stringer).
-
I'm sorry, I probably wasn't very clear on the initial post. The stair is already set up the way. The problem is that the railing is outboard of that stringer. When I offset the railing, it just floats with nothing below it. Here's an example of an old project where this was done in different software. Closed stringer stair with railing built outboard. An here is an example of another project completed.
-
Is there any way to have the bottom of a railing wall follow the bottom of the stair? I have a builder that frequently designs closed stringer stairs that are fully self supporting. The railing is built on top of a beam that sits next to the end stringer of the stair.

Clean framing! I've definitely done things similar to this. It's a case by case basis for me. The above example i gave would have had 36 foot mid span and / or ridge beams.
-
I don't necessarily disagree with you. I don't design these homes, I just engineer them and draw them. These large radius roofs are a pain and expensive, but the builder/homeowner wants them. We are in area with high snow loads as well. Most of the spaces below these roofs are open, so you are either holding it up with massive steel ridges or clear span roof trusses.

A quick screenshot of a perspective view from an old project. A layer of curved framing on top of a clipped truss.

This was provided by my client in sketchup. My previous software was Autocad with an AEC BIM-like add-on. Not nearly as advanced as Chief, but modelling was easier to produce things like this. It's not that big of deal to have to detail it separately.
-
Thanks for the link. I've watched this video before. It solves the geometry, but I think it will create a truss with the top chord flaired. That does not happen in real life. Not a deal breaker, as I can draw a detail of that area. But it would be nice if CA framed it the way it will be built.
-
Hi All, Please see the attached picture. This will most likely be a truss roof for the main roofs and sticks at the porch, with curved flairs framed on top. In my previous CAD package, I would just model this area and it would be be fairly easy to do. I don't even know where to begin in CA for the roof planes, let alone the framing. Can accurate framing even be produced for this roof? Curved roofs, overframed flairs, etc are probably my weakest area in CA. Thanks in advanced for any guidance. Christian

That seemed to do the trick. Thanks!

Hi Jonathan, Thanks for the info. I originally had it set up that way, but with an exterior wall. I hadn't thought about using a pony wall. Is there a way to keep the doorway from dividing the room?

HI all, What is the preferred way for a shed roof to properly terminate below the ceiling of the roof it's interfacing with? I'm struggling with this one. Thanks in advance! Unit 2a-3a.plan
