  1. Mike,

Thanks for your reply. I've reached out to Tommy (HUG Leader) but have not heard back as of yet. Fortunately, I have had a couple of guys (AUS and CAN) respond and we have started Skype sessions . So many folks are looking for compensation for their time. For me, I would rather perfect my CA skills and be compensated for design work and share what I learn in Chief with other aspiring CA users. Sort of like "Pay it Forward". Guess everyone for ways to make a buck these days. Can't say I another bad about that.

    Cheers,

Chief has room planner for as-builds. Chief has greatly improved it , with wall thickness and such. I think I'll give it another try.

    Perry,

I use Room Planner with a "Leica DISTO E7500i". Works fine but I would prefer to use my Laptop and Full Chief Program.

  3. Mike/Joe,

    What I did...

    1. In Plan under "Annotation Sets" create a New Annoset/Layer Set Called "General Annotations - 1/2" Scale" Edit the 7 Attributes as desired, OK
    2. Select "Layer Display Options" and make a copy of the TEXT, RICH and Rename it "TEXT, RICH, GENERAL ANNOTATIONS 1/2"" OK
    3. Select Level 1, and in my case, choose the new Annoset.
    4. Using Rich Text entered the Macro %Living, area% (Anywhere on the screen)
    5. Sent it to Layout and positioned it as desired. (BEAUTIFUL!)
    6. In Plan, and from any layer, make sure the "TEXT, RICH, GENERAL ANNOTATIONS 1/2"" LAYER is set to display only on that layer (Modify ALL).
    7. What's interesting is I can turn off the display in PLAN and it still reports just fine in Layout.

We'll see how it goes from here but a cool first shot.

    Thanks Guys,

  4. Joe,

Any idea why Chief would have it show up in Layout? If it is not applicable to Layout then why is it in the Macro list in Layout at all?

I guess I should have checked the Help Files before asking the Forum. Sometimes it is quicker to ask the experts than to get bogged down searching HELP, Videos, or The Manual for answers. Of course ALL are very informative but often get me "Off Task".

    Thanks again,

  5. Joe,

I may take you up on this and your other macro packages once I get my SAM Template completed. It may require some coaching from you if enable all the features you have designed into the package.  What I am wondering is..."Why is the LIVING AREA (grayed out) in Layout?"

  6. Just wondering if anyone would be interested in doing Skype sessions to share ideas, work through issues and or brainstorm. There are so many ways to do things in Chief that I have to believe there are others who would welcome the sharing of ideas and suggestions in real-time. It's so easy to think you're going down the right path only to find out that there is a better way. I have worked with a few of the gurus (for a fee) and although it has helped, it gets expensive and still there are area where we can improve or streamline processes. If you have the time and are willing please reply.

    Happy New Year to all,

Scott, If you figure out the problem with your mic please let me know because I think I have a related problem that my mic works on my PC in Windows 10 with Voice Recorder but for some reason quit working on my laptop the other day with the same setup but also works in both situations with other apps.

If you are looking for a great free screen recorder to get you back up and running, I am using OBS Studio and love it.  https://obsproject.com/

I can get you up and running with settings for 1080p if you like, just let me know.

HELP Chop. I got OBS up and running but the videos will not playback. I've tried them in both MP4 and MOV formats and I get the same error.

Will do. I will check out OBS and see how it works.

I though this platform relies on MS Silverlight. Silverlight is not supported by MS Edge or Chrome.

I was not aware that you could even run Microsoft's "Expression Encoder 4" on Win10.

Even IF you can, I would not recommend as most PPL may not be able to play these screencasts.

Either way development stopped 4 years ago...

On my Laptop Win 10 it worked fine and converted to WMV. No issue with the post and several views it.

  10. Dermot,

Your response was concise. Is it documented the way you put it the manual or help files? Sorry, just a quick response to the thread. I have not dug into the manual or help files to investigate as it could be anywhere. Thanks,

  11. I know this is a little off the wall but is anyone using Microsoft's "Expression Encoder 4"? This is a FREE Screen recorder and works well on my laptop. However, when I installed it on my Desktop, the MIC does is not recognized. What is odd is the Mic IS recognized and works Windows 10 Pro but not in the app. I have searched all of the web and cannot find a solution.

    Thanks all,

P.S. I know there are other products but I'm keen on getting this to work. Guess it's the challenge.

Can you believe it,  he offered me supper,  not dinner.  My Mom is English,  we eat supper at her house,  everywhere else in the  USA we eat dinner.  I hope you are  FRENCH/Canadian,  if so,  I would be that supper would be awesome.  I hope to take you up on your offer sometime in the future.

Here is my take on the  SAM:

    PART 1

    PART 2

    PART 3

This is stuff I originally did about 9 years ago,  but it still holds up.

    Dude! You rock!

I get a real kick out of watching you get bobble in your own world but that 's part of your charm as well as the complexity of Chief. With that said, I believe your method is far superior to anything else I have seen used or demonstrated thus far. Not to take away from those who have contributed, as all is appreciated.

I would like to see Dede at Chief do a  "Start to Finish" video series using this method for those who enjoy, or simply need, more detail to grasp a concept.

BTW,  "Auto Refresh All" is at the top of your Layout Tool Bar.

Many Thanks from Houston where Crawfish ettouffe' is on the menu for Supper tonight. C'est Bon!

  13. Nice job Larry! Thanks for sharing your perspective on "one" of the millions of ways to use Chief. For me, that is the most frustrating part. Show the how to do it and I can learn it but when there are a zillion ways do the same thing I become overwhelmed quickly. Until recently I have been hit and miss with design work but now I'm all in and have the time to focus on developing a method. Chief is not something you just load on you pc and start building great plans...well actually I did but now realize I have a lot of garbage from making "This will do for now decisions". To be proficient and anything I have to immerse myself or it simply won't stick. Don't know if there are others like me out there but for me I am glad to have you guys to call upon for help and support.

Thanks to all those who give back what they have learned!

I use a modified version of the SAM.  Basically I use a Template.  But in my world any Plan/Layout combination is a set of Templates that can be used to start a new project.  It's just a matter of deleting the things in the Plan that I don't want for the new project.  All Cameras (Section and Elevation) are kept along with the Terrain Boundary, etc.  Floor Plans, Framing, Foundation & Roof Planes are deleted to start fresh.  I utilize a "Clean Layers" Layer Set to make it easy to clean up the project.

Note:  All Schedules are in CAD Detail Windows along with my Site Area Analysis Text Block and a few other things so they automatically carry over.

    Joe,

I'm cleaning up my template and noticed you said " I utilize a "Clean Layers" Layer Set to make it easy to clean up the project". Would you mind elaborating further on your method? I also keep the following CAD Detail Management data in my template. My "CAD DETAIL NOTES" (inside the "CAD DETAIL MGNT") is organized in such a way that I can add or subtract from the verbiage as required and it still fits nicely on the Layout. Each section can be edited individually.

    Jon,

I hope you're felling better these days. Thanks for the comments, and constructive criticism of my rant.

    1) - Already available through deactivate/active.  Getting CA to separate Pheobe(The internal RT engine) from the core software might be nice--some day.

"I am aware of and use this feature when I move from Desktop to Laptop. However. this feature does not solve my issue"

    2) - Export to...  well, this usually involves v-ray and Adobe Premiere Pro CC; maybe some After Effects thrown in.  Seriously, at what point do you say I need to hire a professional?  Either that or go with the "realism" provided by Lumion.  How real do you want to get?  Who's your audience?

"I am experimenting (Learning) Lumion 6 Pro. Cool stuff and amazingly intuitive. Like most folk I want it as real as possible. My prospects and clients love the 3D and the more realistic it is the greater reflection on CA's software. I guess, too, it's my feeble attempt at perfection."

    3) - Already exists within CAX8

"As cheap as 3D Printers have become, I would love to use this feature for more presentation work but I have seen very little discussed about this feature. What models I have seen are underwhelming."

    4) - Um...

    "Disregard"

    5) - Not sure I understand the collaboration part.  Are you interested in Thea/V-Ray/Maxwell training?  Or, do you want to look over an Archvis artist's shoulder while they do the magic? (Good luck with that)

"Since we cannot run two sessions of CA under one license, I'm looking for tools that import Camera views for RayTracing with as shallow a learning curve as possible. I dabbled in 3D Max, Maya and LightWave3D years ago and quickly realized all have a steep the learning curve."

I am committed to CA and appreciate this wonderful community of professionals, like yourself, who are always willing to share their wisdom, insight and lessons learned.

Scott - Many thanks. Those additional cores over my 4 cores (8 threads) dropped the time down from my 80 minutes to your 20 minutes to complete 10 passes. We have now established that more cores are beneficial in reducing raytrace times. However, through this exercise we have also established that the lighting technique also impacts on raytrace time, and in-fact it can be a more effective way to reduce retrace times than throwing more cores at it providing the resulting image quality is to ones satisfaction. This is demonstrated by my previously posted scene (lights adjusted) that ran 25 passes in 4 minutes. Adjusted to 10 passes it ran in less than 2 minutes. When I compare the two scenes they are different, but is one really better than the other. Personally, neither of them are Photo Realistic so what was the benefit of such elaborate lighting and all of that raytrace time?

    Graham

For me, a quality 3D RT image is my biggest selling tool. Of course accurate plans and modeling are the backbone of what we do, most clients become lost in the 2D details of construction drawings.

    Rambling thoughts....

    1) I would like to use my license on a 2nd machine, even if only for viewing and rendering of Stills and 3D Walk-through) would be great

    2) Ability to create 3D Raytraced Walk-Through

    3) Ability to Send my model to a 3D Printer.

    4) Model integration with Lumion 6.0 and higher

    5)External RTE collaboration.

Graham, thanks for indulging me in this thread. You're much more experienced at Chief than I am and thus your views and perspectives are greatly appreciated.
