  1. Anyone have experience using POV-RAY? Curious as to how it compares to C.A.'s built-in RayTracing Engine. It is referenced in the HELP file as an alternative RTE (Ray Trace Engine). Why would this be of interest? Well, if I can run POV-RAY on my Dual XEON and simply import a series of camera shots to Render, by queuing them up, I have essentially solved my Render Farm problem.

My apologies for not checking to see if there is a separate thread for this topic.

  2. "As per CA settings"....not sure where I would find those.  The only way we will ever compare actual performance is to share the file and settings. If you are referring to the post I made last year, and those setting, I can that but to understand how you achieved your last pic, please post your settings.

    thanks

  3. Okay, Here is what I have so far.

    File: RiverstoneMB2 (Attached)

    Preferences of my System:(Attached)

    1) Render

    2) RayTrace

    3) VideoCard Status

Detail: All non-essential data has been removed from the plan file. All you will see is the Bathroom area

    1) Open and use 1/4 Scale Annotation Set | Electrical Layer Set

    2) Select and Open RayTrace Camera (see attached) You will see plan view and RayTrace Settings Screen

    3) Select EDIT and Verify "General Tab Settings" are adjusted to the data provided. (Use File path of choice).

    4) Select and Verify "Lighting Tab Settings" are adjusted to the data provided.

    5) Select and Verify "Advanced Tab Settings" are adjusted to the data provided.

    6) Select and Verify "Image Propertied Tab Settings" are adjusted to the data provided.

    7) Select "Save and Close" then re-open and Render Camera and post Screen Shot with TImeline.

Note: I am rendering as I write with Several programs open so times may very. For me, the whole point is to secure respectable RayTrace times while still using my machine for other duties. I actually ran AIDA64 BURNIN Test at 100% CPU usage last night and it had little to no affect on the RayTrace time.

Anyway, I hope those who care, and or are interested, find this helpful Let me know if I have missed anything of importance.

  4. I DL'd the Bath but there was no exterior scene. Send me the link to the file you are referring to and I will run it and post the results.

Scott - I don't think you would need to increase your RAM. Best way to see is to open up the Windows Task Manager, it will tell you the % Ram utilization. On my system this never exceeds 7GB. Articles that I have read on RAM levels tend to indicate that having excess RAM has little or no benefit. I'm certain your 32GB is more than adequate.

    Graham,

I am completely BLOWN away! I just completed the upgrade and ran the "Riverstone" bath we used earlier. The E5-2683 v3 CPU's (Total cost for both $675 USD) is amazing. 14 CORES | 28 Threads (56 CORES used to RAYTRACE). See attached. Anyone need quick RayTracing? Send me your plan.

  6. Johnny,

I am not familiar with the FREE APPS you mentioned. Also, I should have been clearer. I want to send send Camera shots to RAYTRACE. I'm not going to purchase a second license just for rendering. Has anyone had experience with third party software?

    Thanks,

  7. OK, I know this is a bit strange but here goes.

With the winter upon us, I will be working in town at my apartment but have my DUAL Xeon WS at another location. Is it possible to use the XEON as a remote Render Farm while I work on plans and details at my apartment on a Laptop? Here is what I would like to do.

    *  Be able to run and control my XEON system remotely from town. I would connect to it remotely, Run X8 or X7, transfer the files to render.

I would need to connect to the XEON remotely with my Laptop with some kind of software and be able to transfer files (share across a private network so to speak) and control the XEON to be able to open files and start the renders.

I currently use X8 for design but could I run X7 on the XEON and open the X8 files and render?  I have licenses for both.

My hope is someone on this forum has done such a configuration and would be willing to offer advise.

    Thanks all,

  8. Xeons are a good choice. They perform better than i7s, plus if you do a dual CPU setup you can get even more cores working for you for ray tracing.

    https://www.cpubenchmark.net/high_end_cpus.html

    Doug,

If I upgrade my XEON E5 -2620 v3 (6 core cpu) (CPU MARK 15856) DUAL CPU system with 32 GBs of ECC 2133 RAM to a XEON E5-2683 v3 (14 core cpu) (CPU MARK 22475) will I need to increase the ram to 64GB in order to fully utilize the higher core count on rendering.

Another interesting POV, according to the Passmark Chart, is the XEON E5-2670 (12 core cpu) (CPU MARK 22330). It has nearly the same CPU MARK as the 2683 v3 CPU in a DUAL configuration.

In case you're wondering...I hate waiting on rendering.

    Thanks,

  9. Perry,

Would your mind sharing your system specs? I have my Windows 10 Pro and X8 installed on a Samsung EVO 850Pro 128GB SATA on a 6GB bus connector. I need to upgrade to at least 512GB but was wondering if I should use my MOBO's (ASUS Z10PE-D8 WS) M.2 slot for this drive. Which connection will make for quicker response?

    Thanks Bro!

  10. A while back I purchased an SSD, tb size drive, with everything on it, and it made a huge difference for me but It really depends on what you already have. If you have a killer system , you probably won't see as much difference. Mine was getting a little old so it really helped me.

  11. Outstanding! Sounds like you got one heck of great deal!

I decided against the refurb 17" and am going with a new 15" 4K screen Inspiron with the i7 6700HQ CPU for portability and onsite presentations. Hope I made the right choice.

    Thanks for the feedback.

    View life in 4K clarity

The new Inspiron 15 7000 Series Gaming Edition features 4K Ultra HD display. The large 15.6 inch touch display is perfect for gaming and maximum productivity for professionals on the go.

    Solid-State Drive (SSD)

Solid-state drives are similar to the flash-based memory that you find in USB memory devices and have no moving parts, making them more secure and less prone to failure than standard hard drives. SSDs also pull your data from the drive faster and outperform 10,000 rpm Hard Disk Drives (HDDs) in read/write speeds, meaning you’ll also get faster load times on game maps and other information that’s stored on your device.

For people on the go, the potential benefits are significant
    • Improved performance — faster boot times, faster application launches and faster access to all your documents
    • Durability — helps protect your important files from potential drops
    • Longer battery life — lower power consumption by SSDs than HDDs
    • Quieter, lightweight, and cooler than standard hard drives

  14. Two issues:

    1) My kitchen is mostly cabinets but the material list is calculating Base Molding for the entire space including doorways.

    2) A closet is also calculating the entire linear footage including the door. There is no base molding where the door is located...Duh!

What am I missing to get the correct data for Base and Crown molding?

    Thanks,

  15. With those basic requirements you shouldn't have any problems, here to by the IRC codes and have to go before a plan reviewer for approval before construction begins, I supply 4 elevations with any notes that are needed, foundation plan with requirements for my area for frost protection, floor plans, flr jsts sizes, clg jsts, and rafters, a roof framing plan, electrical plans, section details

One suggestion would be to get a hold of a set of plans that have past muster with local POA, and permitting authorities. The later are usually very helpful in providing you what they want and expect to see on your plans. In many cases the requirements vary greatly depending on the structural engineer used and or the local sub-contractors hired. The previous advise is sound...jump in and start, and use Perry's suggestion to setup templates. In my area, all homes are built on pilings where the "Foundation" is actually 2x12 stringers on top of pilings with sub floor sheeting. My default framing and structure has the pilings on Floor 1 and the sub floor "Foundation" is on Floor 2. The concrete is not structural and only serves parking.

I also use a lot of 3D images and slices of the structure to show clients. Many cannot visualize a plan in 2D or Elevation views so, this is where Chief shines. Use this forum for help...guys like Perry and many others are always willing to assist.
