  1. I'm running mine now but is doesn't look as bright as yours.

What are your RAY TRACE Setting in PREFERENCES?

What lights do you have on and did you change something in the lighting?

I have 24 cores running at 100% at 2.4 GHZ 32 GB of DDR4 ECC RAM

    GeForce 980 4 GB RAM

...not making the same rate as you so there must be something different in your settings.

  2. Graham,

What tweaks did you apply? The goal here is to determine the optimum settings in both CA and our respective Hardware to obtain maximum result. Post a screen capture before you stop the render so we can see the TIME, PASSES and SIZE from the bottom of the screen.

    Beautiful image!!

    Thanks,

  3. I may have missed the concept behind this process and thus am not taking full advantage of the feature.

The REF layer can me displayed by opening the object in layout and selecting "Plan View" option. Nice feature but I would just a well control it from the plan like some many other items. Logic here?

  4. I've not delved into the PB and it use in my WF yet but plan to soon. I do use a boat load of ANNOSETS ( Thank you DSH) and love the flexibility they, and their specific Layer and Ref sets, other. I like to send the plan view to Layout with the REF set on and have the flexibility later to turn it off if I choose to do so but I cannot. Is this an issue, bug, lack of functionality or operator error (I'm suspect the latter) but thought I would ask.

    Thanks GUYS!

  5. To level the playing field, and provide real-world hardware comparisons...

    1. Download the Riverstone plan from CA
    2. Use all default settings for that plan
    3. Position the camera in the masterbathroom at X:507, Y:425, X:0
    4. Leave all Light as the default (168 on + Sun)
    5. Select Final View with Shadows
    6. Select Indoor- High Quality Raytrace
    7. Launch Assistant
    8. Retain Aspect Ratio
    9. Screen size 1781 x 805
    10. 300 DPI
    11. Lots of Focal Blur
    12. No Caustics
    13. Run for no more than 1 hour

Post your Screenshot with Timecode at the bottom of the Screen.

    Cheers!

  6. Graham,

Have you tried rendering an image of that size and resolution? I actually think it was pretty good given the parameters. Rarely, if ever, would I render something that large, but if need be I could live with those numbers.

    Jon, what are your numbers?

  7. For those of you who care. the E5.2620 v3's are running 33C at idle and 45c and full X7 render mode. The attached was a sample test render.

Perhaps Doug could set us up with a benchmark file with preset Camera and layer settings for to compare and contrast.

  8. Larry,

That would explain why when I use CPUID HWMonitor CPU1 temps don't change and CPU0 ramp up. See attached. Really weird why I cannot find an app that will report both CPU's. Do you know what your BIOS settings are, and maybe where the function you suggest might be found?

    Thanks,

  9. Here is where you can change the number of cores being used.

Mine now shows 12 which would indicate X7 recognized the two physical CPU (6 cores each) but when I run a raytrace, only one heats up and by only 7 degrees. The other appears to be at idle. Hum!

  10. I have slightly different variant to this issue. I can't seem to get the Revision entry to display in the table. To check my Layout, I open a Chief template and went to page 1 using both "Page Information" and "+ Revision" to enter a revision, neither worked. Hum! I must be missing the obvious. Any thoughts?

    Thanks,

  11. Awesome Scott,

New stuff is always exciting. Run some Ray Trace comparisons from your old machine and maybe post a plan with RT times so we can bench mark.

What was your system cost, if you don't mind?

    Larry,

The old i7 motherboard laptop crashed so there will be no rendering from there. I just completed the build today and loaded Windows 8.1 and Chief x7. Not fully operational just yet but I did perform a sample full screen high res render of a stock Chief plan and it was running about 70 seconds per pass.

  12. I've settled on a EVGA 980 4GB. Hopefully all the components will be here mid week so I can get back to work. The Gateway i5 laptop I am currently defaulting to is subpar to say the least.

I'll list the components of my system in my signature and attempt some benchmark test for all you wonderful folks who helped me through this process. I can't thank you all enough for your terrific responses and expertise.

Much success to all of you!!!!!

  13. Doug,

Again, thank you and the team for the constructive feedback. In Chief's humble opion, would you consider the following as the optimum performance GPU

    Single or double GPU boards?

    970 or 980 units ?

    Memory 4, 8 or greater?

Just lookimg for what you guys would pick if you had your favorites.

Thanks again for the terrific support
