This is the Laptop MarkMc has help me find and I will likely Order next week Diane, it is configurable but they also have higher end machines depending on your Budget, for me it is a secondary machine , so not totally spec'd out, though that isn't always necessary as often the internal components are all the same in higher end machines, ie they tend to be all Aluminium for example rather than plastic or have G-Sync capable Screens which isn't necessary for ACAD or X10. (gamers like it for fast paced action)

The 17" screen is AHVA ( IPS like) not TN which is similare to AMVA which my 32" BenQ monitors have , and so should be an issue for me with the Flicker.

I have spoken to ProStar several times in my research and they have been very nice, helpful etc , and answered on the 2nd ring both times which was nice...no phone menus to deal with, straight to a real person :)

If that P70  is the Lenovo Thinkpad ( you don't give brand ) then you don't need to spend that much as Chief does not require a Nvidia Quadro Graphics Card, a normal gaming Nvidia Laptop would be fine with say a 1060 or 1070 GTX depending on Budget, eg one of MSI GP Series like in my Sig. (models numbers differ in CDN to US)

As I have just found out many laptops have TN Panels which my eyes cannot handle but if your Current Desktop monitor is a TN LCD rather than IPS technology you are probably okay with a TN screen at 60 or 120hz screen resolution.

I work with AutoCAD as well and want a pretty robust system.  Will look into the ones you mentioned.  Also need to learn about the monitor types you mentioned. Are all these available in matte options? Thanks!

  3. Getting close to that time of the year to start looking at investing in my business. This year I want to get a second laptop. A lady that also uses CA mentioned she has the Laptop P Series P70 with a matte screen. I think this would be good for working without seeing myself in the reflection and for working in an outdoor environment with bright sunlight.

I am also looking at getting a wireless external hard drive that my two laptops could access files from and write to and have this external hard drive backed up onto my server, which is mirrored, as well as to an online backup service. Right now I'm using OneDrive for my online backup.

Does anyone have any suggestions or recommendations on the changes I have in mind?

  4. My client is wanting to put an upper (low ceiling) storage loft in the existing space by removing the 9' ceilings and opening up the attic area.  I have it drawn with a 2x12" floor system for the loft.  It isn't shown properly in the plan cross section as it will be attached to the existing walls rather than dividing them.  Is there a way to have this shown correctly in the cross sections?

  5. My client is wanting the stairway from the ground level garage to the 1st living floor.  He wants this stair to attach to a landing that is a step below where the door to enter the house is located.  In other words,  coming from the house to the garage, you would pull open the door and step down onto the landing and then follow the stairs down to the garage level.  Is there a way to do this using the stairway and landing tools.  I have always had a landing going between two sets of stairs, or have the floor being accessed provide a landing.  Hope I have explained this well enough for you to understand.

  6. I have a client that is wanting me to finish the plan he has drawn in Home Designer.  He has exported the file to me and when I opened it, I noticed that some options aren't available in my x10 that are normally there.  The one I am seeing currently is the Annotation sets where I can select electrical set or plot plan set.  Only option is 1/4" scale set.  Is there a way I can quickly get these things added to this drawing.  I tried to copy his drawing by selecting it and then plan to past it into a new drawing, but it wouldn't let me copy it....not sure the defaults would have stayed the same as what the client set up, had I been successful.  Any ideas???  Also, do you know of any other issues that I may run up against because of the Home Designer to  Chief Architect transfer.  Thanks!

  7. Don't think I did this.  Something strange did happen yesterday on a project I was working on.  I was sending views to layout and then one of the views wouldn't go.  It said something about needing to save the file.  Saving didn't fix the problem. Ended up doing a save-as and re-linking the other layout views to the new plan.  Maybe what ever caused that messed up the recent file list.

  8. My contract does state that all drawings are property of my company.  I told them I don't normally sell my plans.  I have high volume builders that bring me their plans that I make changes to and these remain their plans.  Others are custom builders and individuals needing plans and I normally set the reuse fee not including structural engineer cost at $500 if I don't have to make any changes to the plan.   Pretty low cost, but I want to help the next guy make a buck, too.

  9. As I understand it, drawing as an employee the employer owns the plans.  However, drawing as an owner of a drafting/ design company you own the plans even if the design is given to you by your customer.   https://www.constructionbusinessowner.com/law/law/builder-beware-how-avoid-blueprint-and-building-design-lawsuits#sthash.nuulqIiv.dpuf    Have you ever had he situation arise where the owner wants to buy the rights to their plan.  Would you sell it?  If so, at what price?
