  1. So maybe like this Perry. Maybe we should all just get together and finish the design for Jberd, as this is likely for a non-profit situation anyway.

    Chapsaw really nice out of the box solution for the op to go with his design.

    FYI, if you want to curve a ceiling plane you can draw a rectangular ceiling plane and intersect it with the room polyline, so that you can get the result you need. finally you may need to convert the curved edge of the ceiling plane to multiple segments by " convert arc to multiple segments". but really interesting solution you have posted.

  2. Agreed there is lots to fix but the priority of those fixes will vary from person to person and that balancing act within Chief to change features is not an easy one.

     

    I've given up trying to change their list with my suggestions but instead of feeling defeated I feel pretty confident that they will improve the program in ways that will help my business. No doubt others will be very disappointed no matter which direction they choose to go.

  3. Yes they are awful but I find I really need them very little in my work flow. I can clearly understand why you would want them improved (and so would I), coming from your background with Vectorworks but I just don't need them much in my day to day work with Chief. I'll need an occasional corbel, molding,bracket or symbol and I can use Chief to create those fast and easy using the tools as is. Took a while to figure them out (because of the awful mentioned above) and that's a huge downside in my book, but once understood - not so bad.

    I wonder how many people really need the tools to be improved, versus those who merely want them to be improved like myself?

    Larry the said improvements do not diminish the as is, by any means! I think chief should be moving forward and be able to fix the broken links, it already does it, but lacks the integrity between views. which isn't logically acknowledged deficiency of the codes. I would like to see that one fixed.
  4. right click on exterior wall, select "open object properties" from the drop down and a DBX will get opened. go to the wall type panel, then change the material types and properties there and see how quickly all the exterior walls change in the plan as well as the material list. there are also an other ways to achieve that others will probably say some.

  5. No everything looks good in the 3D perspective view before converting. It seems like it could be a lighting issue but I did not think that was a factor when making a symbol.

    "SMOOTHING ANGLE" should be lower in the create symbol DBX. by default it is 45°, so put a value of 1° instead, and your panels should look like the origional.

  6. Thanks Yusuf.  Do I create only one quoin or the whole side?  If the whole side will it automatically extend with the window size?

  7. Alan, open the trim tools and there is quoins there. Place and move and resize as needed. Only thing I see that might be problem is above window...they don't rotate. Maybe create symbol in library might solve that.

    Nice suggestion, but I am reinforcing this concept.

    Create a symbol following mejery's answer above, and add the symbol to library as a millwork.

    Then go to window dbx and in the window treatments panel, there is an option to attach that symbol to your window.

    And the merits of attaching the symbol to a window is that, once you set it up, it is part of that window, so you can easily copy, move and resize it easily. You can add to your library for future use. You can also apply it on a curved window in curved walls, since the program will automatically reshape it and adjusts the curvature. This area is really where I believe there has been a clever programmers in chief inc. If those guys are still there, they could have developed chief better in some parts that chief seems to have limits, for example stairs!! , unless they had their brains .....

He's referring to the "tread" on that short section of ramp forming what is essentially a wall cap.  Me thinks it has something to do with being in the vicinity of the other landing and stairs because you cut and paste those 2 sections of ramp into a blank plan and they work just fine...the "treads"/wall caps match and align.

    Thanks Michael for clarifying the issue. I am not sure this one, but I think if the widths he is referring is from the ramp dbx, I am afraid those numbers are not actually exactly equal. So just drag and snap it manually. The ramp isn't accurately programmed because I have seen two ramps of the same rise/run where not exactly at the same height.

  9. Another question - why isn't my "tread" width working out to be the same even though they are set the same? bug?

    I don't think I am exactly getting the point. The red arrow is toward the ramp width? please make it some more clear about the tread width you are asking.

  10. Make the stair auto height off, to make the stairs stay where they are, also the landing should be free from automatic heights and depths once you have set your correct stair configuration.

    To place the railings at the center of your wall, don't use the ramp railings, so simply make them off and use a manual railing that follow stairs/ramp. Just remember to make the new railing wall "no locate" and "no room definition" to let them placed on top of your walls if any.

  11. Send to layout then export each page as a DWG. Too bad you can't export all the pages at once.

    Perry, if you copy the items of layouts in to one layout sheet, not nessesary to put them in the printable sheet, but rather any where in that "all in one " layout. So this would allow you to export all at once, that would appear in his model space, and that is exactly how AutoCAD guys work on their model space and finally they rearrange to different layouts by creating view ports.

    I can't get that to work.  I tried with a project recently (sending to structural engineer) and nothing I could do made it so he could open the file.  Id say it was him, but then did this for the truss guy and same result.

    Most probably you may have missed to change the version of AutoCAD to the version that your friend uses. I usually export it as AutoCAD 2007 and older versions, so no complaint comes back. The other possible problem may be, if your friend isn't more familiar using AutoCAD, he should click "Z & ENTER" again "E & ENTER" or zoom extents to view the drawings on screen. Just a thought

I actually thought of you when I did it!   Your ability to think outside the box is one I admire.   I just sat here for a few minutes thinking....and it was fun when the idea came to me.   Thanks for the inspiration to think outside the box.  You have made me look at chief in a different manner when it comes to making it do what I want at time.

  13. Enter the base line angle a value greater than zero. You should exactly get that angled ridge of the dormer. I am sure it was just this point why Johnny posted this video, other wise it was some thing obviousI. I was doing it manually+ I never used that "baseline angle" too. may be it was only me that was missing. Any way after you put the eye borrow dormer then explode it, and just 2 more clicks to enter that box.

  14. No, what Johhny shows us is a bit different, but more easier. I am sure that geometrical property can be achieved. Chief doesn't lack! The secret lies at the bottom of roof dbx. "Baseline angle" yes "baseline angle", but this is again an indicator for the potential superiority of chief over the others.

  15. Thanks Michael, you got what I was about to say in post #7 , you put it much better and even more intutive instruction. I would advise users to follow Michael's method to be more efficient using those tools.

    That is the best way to go with this sort of cad editing.

Draw a line or poly line around where you want to cut your stuff, then select it and start to trim using a fence type drag to cut any cad line that has extensions in both areas you want to delete at the same time in the area you want to retain. Next add a line or poly Line at same location, but a bit outside the area you need to retain, then fence select using it and click delete, so that any cad crossed by that fence would be off. The remaining task may be only an easy clean ups by group selecting them. Just a thought.

  17. Yusuf, this really looks great, but usually we need to really build what is in our drawings. Did you ever tried to bend 2x6 like that? What would be count of human labor hours for bending, and what is total price of that stud?

    Also, what is load-bearing resistance of that stud?

    Baxon thanks, I think that was a question to chiefarchitect, but I was just trying to show how one can use the tools of chief architect to get what he needs to draw and ofcourse how it should be built. When I come specifically to your question it depends what one wants, there are a lot of ways to cconstruct arched opening frames, but most of them are just to frame curved part bellow the main header as you can see it is there. But if what you were asking is some thing like this picture. guess how, but that should take less effort and time to assemble in the same workflow using wall framing.
