DrawingABlank
Sorting two columns in succession of the Active Layer Display Options gives the viewing results desired. Such as sort layers by Name then sort by Used, shows alphabetical list with all the Used layers at the top. When I click in the display column to display or hide the layer, the entire list shuffles. It could be sorting but what it sorts to is unknown. (also happens when clicking in another column such as lock) Why should the layers shift at all? Do you experience the same results? In the attached example, the layers are sorted and ready as desired. "Cabinets, Labels" layer 'disp' column is clicked to display that layer. The "Cabinets, Labels" is displayed but the layers un-sort and whatever unsorted layer corresponds to the spatial location of the layer ends up being highlighted. (in this case "Material Region")

DrawingABlank
Thanks for the reply. So that means, no change at all for you? (other than the clicked action)

It maintains "Used" as the sort method but reshuffles the order of the layers to some nonsense, because it's now not sorted alphabetically, by Displayed or by Locked. That is a good point. Technically, it is maintaining the last requested sort. Funny thing... Paying more attention to the entire layer list, the sort sequence described does not entirely config into A-Z with all Used at the top. For some reason the list restarts alphabetically. Why the need to move them at all when the selection is being made on an unsorted column? I don't think it could be called a 'bug' since it is performing the task. Is this tiny suggestion worth submitting? On the other hand, may be an easy tweak.

I can't think of any reason anyone would want or expect the list to go bonkers like that.
