thomhu
Hello, I am working on a project that is calling out white oak vertical shiplap on certain walls. I'm using a shiplap from the core catalogue and I can make it vertical with the adjust material tool. However, I would like to show the shiplap with a white oak grain while maintaining the shiplap look. I see a white oak material in the library, but spraying it on the shiplap wall eliminates the shiplap lines. What would be the best way? Thanks for your time. DRAWZILLA
in the material edit dbx., just use the blend with checkbox and choose any color
thomhu
Thanks for the help! Instead of changing the color, I'm looking to change the color to a white oak wood grain look . Would it perhaps be the texture source jpg in the Texture tab in the Define Material tool?
DRAWZILLA
that's what the blending tool does, it doesn't change the texture, just the color
robdyck
The Core catalog has 3 shiplap materials with a wood appearance however they aren't great as they really don't look much like any type of wood, much less white oak. So if you can't find a suitable texture in any other catalog, you need to make your own texture by either replacing the texture file of one of the shiplap materials with a texture of an oak panel, or by using the normal map from Chief's material and adding that to a texture of oak. Keep in mind that the original wood texture file will need to be running horizontally to work with the Chief normal map. The texture file and normal map can't be rotated independent of each other using the adjust material tool. I quickly made a material which you can use or inspect to make your own material. thomhu
Thanks much for that material! I need it to be vertical, so I used the material definition tool to rotate it and it works but with a faint white line half way up the wall which I'm guessing won't always show up in print or export ....I'm trying to understand the use of texture files and bump/normal maps... could you share the step to take to change an existing material using a different texture file or bump map in our example to go from an existing color to a wood grain?
