Convert roof with living space below into barn style roof
thomhu replied to thomhu's topic in General Q & A
Thanks very much for taking the time to post solutions! I appreciate it and have learned a lot in the process. -
Hello, I have a project going with a client where there have been many, many changes. First floor garage, 2nd floor living space, 3rd floor living space created with "ignore top floor" with loft/walkway providing access to bedrooms. Client wants to change 12/12 pitch roof to gambrel style for looks and to provide more headroom on loft/walkway. I can make a test roof convert from 12/12 to gambrel, but not when there are interior walls that connect to exterior on the new floor. Do I need to delete the entire 3rd floor and start over? Many details still need cleaning and it suffers from the 1000 changes syndrome. I would like to change the grid pattern to a single vertical stile on all windows on an existing plan. When I use the marquee tool, it will only select similar types. Is there a way to select all windows at once including mulled units? I've changed it in the defaults but it is not updating. I do not have restrictive selection checked.

Many of our remodels choose southern yellow pine for interior flooring. The pine in the core catalogues are ok, but don't really look like southern yellow. I can do an ai render with a prompt to get the southern yellow pine look, but I don't always need it to look photo realistic. Is there a material for Chief that I can purchase or create that would look more like southern yellow pine flooring?

Client wants a old style monitor in the center of a barn roof. This would be basically a big cupola open to below with windows and not what appears when you look up "monitor" for a barn roof. First floor is 16' tall. Second floor is 8' tall with dormers. Only one drawn for now. Second floor is under attic of 1st floor roof - "ignore second floor" for roof build works. Monitor will be about 6' wide by 10' long on top of ridge. I created a 3rd floor blank design and made the small 6 x 10 room tall enough to project through the roof with room for windows. This added walls on the 3rd floor and raised the entire structure. "ignore 3rd floor" in roof build dialogue box didn't work, so I manually lowered the roof back down 8'. In the wall definition box on the structure tab, I choose balloon through ceiling and balloon/extend through floor but it doesn't cut through either. In camera view just above the 2nd floor ceiling, I can see the walls on top of the second floor ceiling and manually raise them up through the roof and then cut a roof hole and a ceiling hole so the shaft is open to the second floor. This works, but is there an easier way ? Pics attached Thanks for your time, -Thomas Huntington Practical Drafting and Design Huntington Construction LLC

Thanks much! I couldn't recognize such a short pony.....

This one is giving me issues. I've been RTFM and youtubing but not having success. I could use some your fine folks' expertise..... What is the most efficient way to go through the dialogue boxes add a foundation for a shed with the details in the attached sketch? It's a slab on a footer and two rows of blocks. Then a single block on top of the slab with pins to get the shed an additional 8" off the ground with the wall on top. When I get into the foundation dialogue box , there are options for stem walls and monolithic pour, but I'm not getting the right combo. Any help would be much appreciated. Thanks much for that material! I need it to be vertical, so I used the material definition tool to rotate it and it works but with a faint white line half way up the wall which I'm guessing won't always show up in print or export ....I'm trying to understand the use of texture files and bump/normal maps... could you share the step to take to change an existing material using a different texture file or bump map in our example to go from an existing color to a wood grain? Thanks

Thanks for the help! Instead of changing the color, I'm looking to change the color to a white oak wood grain look . Would it perhaps be the texture source jpg in the Texture tab in the Define Material tool?

Hello, I am working on a project that is calling out white oak vertical shiplap on certain walls. I'm using a shiplap from the core catalogue and I can make it vertical with the adjust material tool. However, I would like to show the shiplap with a white oak grain while maintaining the shiplap look. I see a white oak material in the library, but spraying it on the shiplap wall eliminates the shiplap lines. What would be the best way? Thanks for your time. Chief x17 Windows 11 Think Station P360

Yes will definitely need rail......Drawing railings on top of the ramp worked, but showed up level. Didn't see how to slope. I drew two more ramps - one on either side with automatic rails turned on. Then shrink the width of each to just a couple of inches and turn off one side of the auto rails. Details not perfect but pretty close. I suppose could also use azek texture on the ramp and hand draw lines in to represent the individual boards if it's for a permit drawing.....

Wow Chrisb222 , that is an amazing solution! Seems like an issue that shouldn't need an amazing solution, but thanks for sharing! Here's my summary of what you are telling Chief to get the desired result - is this right? 1. Make a single rail on one side as high as the thickness of the deck material 2. Give it a bottom rail but no top rail and no balusters 3. Make newel posts the same thickness as the gap you want between boards 4. Make newel post spacing the same as board width 5. Make bottom rail same width as ramp, the same height as floor material, and offset to middle of ramp. 6. Use material in spec dialogue to Change newel material to insulation air gap (invisible material) 7. Use material in spec dialogue to Change rail material to material texture you want for ramp floor 8. Use adjust material definition rainbow icon to rotate material in texture dialogue.

Hello, I am working on a 5' wide wheelchair ramp for a new client. I would like to show the deck of the ramp to be made of Azek decking in solid pieces. I am able to change the default concrete to a hardwood floor look with many joints. I would like to show solid 5/4 x 6 decking boards with the azek color and texture. I have been able to change the material to the Chief library's Azek decking through Materials in the specification dialogue, but it takes away the individual boards and makes the whole ramp have the azek texture. What would be the easiest way to do this? Thanks for your time, Thomas Huntington Huntington Construction LLC Chief X17 Windows 11
