any idea why the moon is shown like this?

 

I think the bottom gets cutoff because that is where the generated sky starts. but the top??

if I move it "above" the start of the generated sky

and second question. any idea how to get the generated sky to move down? 

 

edit: I think it is the edge of the terrain causing this, so I can change that

ok, I can get rid of the cup by changing the tilt angle, but then it is waayyy up there.

The light reflected by the moon originates from the sun. Try moving the sun around below the horizon until you get the desired moon appearance.

I've noticed too that when you click Toggle Sun, it doesn't turn off the sun, it moves it down so that the moon is lit from the bottom.

So like Dan says, if you manually drop it below the horizon, it should be side-lit.

yes that works, although it produces some pretty odd shapes for the moon...that I have never seen.

 

anyway turns out if I have the moon that low the shadows are too long, and make the terrain look grey. the btter shawdow look is the moon above..which then does not show in the picture. which is fine in the end I think. it was more for a "pretty picture"
