Issue printing layouts / stretched and compressed
lbuttery replied to Migaloo's topic in General Q & A
Jim: yes, but if you save the PDF you will have an archive of exactly what was printed at that time you can also email the PDF to others including the print shop I also use PDF's to capture web sites for archiving or reading later PDF can be printed in color - then when sending to printer you can choose color or B/W you can choose exactly which pages to print using PDF's eliminates most printer driver issues Lew -

Jim: ok, once you have your issue settled take some time and give serious consideration to printing to PDF first many, many advantages better than sliced bread Lew -
Issue printing layouts / stretched and compressed
lbuttery replied to Migaloo's topic in General Q & A
Jim: you will probably have to post the plan and layout otherwise, everyone is just guessing does your drawing sheet match the layout size ? MENU - FILE - PRINT - DRAWING SHEET are you printing to PDF first ? if not, you should Lew -
the biggest advantage to going to metric is that the entire rest of the industrial world is using metric Lew
-
I'm all for the metric system and have been since I learned it in high school when I used to measure a house I write all dims in sixteenths when I model I do everything in sixteenths then the math becomes easier 1/2 written as 8/16 1/4 written as 4/16 1/8 written as 2/16 sum = 14/16 when I print the permit set - I then revert to "standard" fractions Lew

Larry: I've had my say bye Lew -
MC: I use separate plans and create symbols to place in the master plan yes, if a change is needed the symbol needs to be created again and placed again for me, this avoids the hassle of impacting the other buildings foundations, roofs, terrain etc it would be nice if Chief used X-Ref feature where changes in the garage plan would auto-magically be updated in the master plan - but no joy there yet ... Larry: I have no intention of refraining there are many of these threads over the last decade many, where my last comment was "thankfully, it is not your opinion that matters but CA's" I will not do a search - they are there I know they are because often I was on the sharp end of the pointy sticks but I will be sure to announce in neon lights whenever this "Lord of Flies" attitude rears again Lew -

Glenn: no, you figured to play a gottcha game and I refuse to play it you've pulled this "show me one" tactic before trying to shut down a "diaglog" I refused to play then also I'll just re-state that if it wasn't happening then why did the OP start this thread ??? Lew -

Glenn: I have no intention of doing searches for these I will be sure to point them out each time they happen in the future just for your edification ... I'm not playing your game of denial - you know they are there Lew -
Power Users Preventing Needed Changes in Chief
lbuttery replied to KevinWaldron's topic in General Q & A
Glenn: there are plenty - go look for the word "work-around" or "workaround" you shouldn't have any trouble finding them Lew -
Power Users Preventing Needed Changes in Chief
lbuttery replied to KevinWaldron's topic in General Q & A
The problem is not the workarounds they are most welcome as a temporary solution to the issue the problem is when some "insist" that because there is a workaround available then the suggestion or "fix" is not needed then when the OP states they still would like to see something "better" than the workaround eventually then the browbeaters start in with the admonitions that Chief is "perfect" if you just learn its ways that is the point of this thread Lew -
NewAsia: Sorry, but Chief is not setup to share via BIM you may be able to do import and export transfers but there will probably be data loss of various types probably best to contact CA's sales dept to discuss your needs Lew

as a followup I tested 18 x 24 and that printed nicely on 8.5 x 11 I started with the larger size as I wasn't sure the stuff would be readable on 8.5 x 11 it is - so I set the drawing sheet to 8.5 x 11 and adjusted the maps - reads fine 8.5 x 11 is much cheaper to print when doing 100 copies for 8 pages of info going to look for new glasses now Lew
-
Michael: wow, I just went over my other PDF's and I could have sworn they were printing to the edges when doing 8.5 x 11 from 11 x 17 PDF man, I need new glasses or a new brain thanks for looking Lew
-
I have the layout setup for 11 x 17 landscape the layout looks good the PDF looks good yet when I print to 8.5 x 11 it's not right (see attached) each of the maps should still be in the corners ??? I have checked layout settings and PDF settings and I can't see what is causing the mis-print I have other 11 x 17 layouts and they work fine ??? Lew NICHOLS_TOURS_160519_1215_LBX6.zip

Power Users Preventing Needed Changes in Chief
lbuttery replied to KevinWaldron's topic in General Q & A
Michael: offering workarounds is very welcome insisting that the workarounds are "sufficient" over improvements is not always welcome there is a level of "browbeating" and sometimes even "Lord of the Flies" attitudes and that is what is not welcome Lew -

Kevin: I agree, time after time a problem or suggestion is presented a workaround is presented fine and dandy workarounds are great for the short-term but then the fireworks start when someone suggests the workaround is not the end-all solution then the long-knives come out and the brow-beating that its just a few clicks so what's wrong with the workaround I've seen and participated in these "battles" for over a decade long-ago I stopped making suggestions I now wait till someone else does and then I chime in in the end the only opinion I care about is CA's I will not let the nay-sayers shout me down Lew -
macros should be used for efficiency not as band-aids for deficiencies in features user-friendliness versus "do you wanna know a secret" Lew
-
Michael: those steps may be fine for occasional use but to do over and over again if that is what is needed all those extra clicks start to add up secondly - if this is a task that isn't done for a long time then remembering those steps can be an issue much better to have a setting or have the material list generator ask "do you want to include the walls" much more "user-friendly" Lew
-
There IS a way... Michael: WAY too many steps a preference or default setting would be preferred ... Lew
-
Hmmm, there should be an option to include the walls when doing a single room that would make common sense .... Lew

I'm awake and I agree with Richard Lew
